Title: The USFL is Coming Back!
Post by StegRock on Mar 7th, 2003, 8:37am
Anybody out there really remember the USFL?  Moreover, fondly?  If so, what was your team and some of your memories?  I thought ESPN.com's tribute to the USFL this week was, well, interesting.  I even downloaded the USFL graphic they had up.  I thought it looked cool.  What do you guys remember of the USFL?  Did you ever think it had the kind of impact on the NFL their writers (seem to) claim it had?  On that note, here are three of their USFL articles I perused:

http://espn.go.com/nfl/columns/usflmain/1517981.html;

http://espn.go.com/nfl/columns/pasquarelli_len/1518471.html;

http://espn.go.com/nfl/s/2003/0304/1517972.html.

There is quite a bit more if you are interested to know.  And, the aforementioned graphic is located on ESPN.com's NFL "index" page, but I don't know for how much longer...

The thing I remember most about the USFL was how some of the biggest college stars were defecting to the new league.  Watching a young Herschel Walker, right out of UGA, run wild was exciting.

I remember the Philadelphia Stars won a USFL championship too before bolting to Baltimore.

I wasn't even born yet when the USFL ended, so can't really say that I remember much about it.  [smiley=newbie.gif]

Although, I think I remember hearing about all this hype about some kid straight out of Highschool, and was supposed to be some big star, but ended up doing squat in the USFL and didn't even play in the NFL. Can't remember his name at the moment,

I just went ahead and added the USFL helmet and team logos graphic as an avatar.  It is listed as "USFL"!  It's pretty cool!  Unrelated to the USFL, but related to avatars, I also added one that Philly once used in the past.  It is called "The_Catch"!  It is also very neat!  Enjoy!

When I was a kid, my father use to bring us to the Denver Gold games.  [smiley=sunny.gif]
They played at the old Mile High and there were a lot of empty seats... That's all I remember.

I was a huge New Jersey Generals fan back in the day.
Primarily because of Herschel Walker. He was huge. I still remember the year he broke Dickerson's record by getting over 2400 yards in a season.
They also had the likes of QBs Brian Sipe, Doug Flutie and Jim Kelley.
They usually did not win as much as they should of, or as much as Donald Trump would have liked, but they were fun to watch.

Look at this old thread becoming relevant again (almost a decade later)...  Currently atop "The REAL Feed":

Fred Biletnikoff joins new USFL, won't compete with NFL (http://www.nfl.com/news/story/09000d5d82901cef/article/fred-biletnikoff-joins-new-usfl-wont-compete-with-nfl)
NFL.com (10.05.2012 20:39)
A reincarnation of the USFL, with a differentbusiness model, plans to kick off in March. Hall of Fame receiver Fred Biletnikoff will be among its advisers.

More on the USFL 2013 comeback from another one of the name-brand guys involved in the venture... from "The REAL Feed":

Former QB Jeff Garcia believes revived USFL can thrive (http://www.nfl.com/news/story/09000d5d82958e5e/article/former-qb-jeff-garcia-believes-revived-usfl-can-thrive)
NFL.com (25.05.2012 16:56)
The long-dead USFL could be making a comeback. Former quarterback Jeff Garcia is among a group looking to revive the league, which was popular during the 80s. The latest version is scheduled to start in 2013.

Despite the headline of this next report, the USFL sounds like just the right place for this guy, at least to start out...

Exonerated ex-USC recruit wants shot at NFL (http://espn.go.com/los-angeles/nfl/story/_/id/7972614/exonerated-ex-usc-trojans-recruit-brian-banks-wants-shot-nfl)
ESPN: NFL (25.05.2012 15:11)
Now that Brian Banks has been exonerated of a rape conviction that put him in prison for five years, the one-time prep football star has a message for NFL coaches: Give him a chance.

Banks could be the poster child for the USFL!
