Fellas,

This definitely merits its own thread.  I am interested in beefing up our "Fantasy Articles" section.  With ALL I am doing, fitting writing articles in is a toughie for me.  Hell, the last piece I did dates back to November and I am still awaiting the also very busy Mike Anderson.  However, if I receive some, I will keep the page updated.  I would love to get a new guy in the fold.  A few important notes, though, that involve what I want to accomplish with OUR "Fantasy Articles" section:

1.  I will consider quality; I have seen some REAL GARBAGE go up elsewhere to the point that I cringed thinking that my pieces were up alongside them; so, I am going to implement quality-control, which may include both rejection and editing/proofreading (regarding the latter, see http://www.theenglishmaster.com/, my other, slightly revenue-generating internet venture, for my credentials, and also consider that helping that site generate more revenue, in effect, is the same as helping this site make money, by the way ;) );

2.  For the sake of professionalism, I would like writers here to submit both a) a nicely-written and pertinent autobiography like the one I did for myself (see http://www.fantasyfootballer.com/fantasyarticles.htm) and b) a head-shot/wallet-sized picture to display like mine [smiley=smileytrash.gif] ; that is what all the big sites do, and I just think it gives a MUCH more professional impression and feel, which draws people, especially more serious readers;

3.  Though this would definitely not be a prerequisite, it would be cool if our writers could have a shtick/niche.  Like, e.g., Mike Anderson's is (was) going to be "Dynasty League's"; I know another person has expressed an interest in writing articles on "Fantasy Leagues that use Individual Defensive Players"; if you could find a niche for yourself, I think it would be more impressive to our readership; that having been said, I never have, perhaps outside of my implicit harping on "Deep Keeper Leagues", and I will not restrict the freedom of my writers like that; this is just a critical suggestion;

4.  Finally, obviously, at first, any contributions have to be done as a donation; I can't afford to pay myself, no less others; and, hell, I have done MORE THAN MY SHARE of freebies for sites (and actually gotten grief in return from one "revenue-generating" site, in particular, that I actually still do an occasional piece for [smiley=nono.gif] ).

An important addendum to this...

The pecking order, so to speak, at least regarding order of display on the web page, will basically go first-come-first-serve.  Translation:  the first guy that gives me an article and signs up to be a "semi-regular" writer, i.e. producing at least three pieces a year, I suppose, will get that slot right across from mine that has been reserved for Mike Anderson (at least at the outset, just meaning that I may change the layout of that page someday).  IN ANY EVENT, no matter what, that guy will remain first on the totem pole.  SO, if you think this is something that you may be interested in, I would suggest signing on sooner rather than later.  What the hell?  Life waits for nobody!  If it is something you have been considering, stop talking about it and just do it.  That's what I did back in 1999 with Football Insider and continued to do so for eight months, eventually parlaying it into a full-time job.  And, quite frankly speaking, I think our venture here at FantasyFootballer.com is MUCH more exciting than that one was because as we are in the very nascent stages of the development of this site, every contribution makes such a difference and the greater the (extent of the) contribution, the more it influences the evolution of the "personna" of the site; implication, an article obviously carries more weight than a post.  Food for thought, guys!  I look forward to the first guy that steps up to the plate. I know I had talked to you about this on a phone call a while back.  I am interested in writing articles, but I'm not sure what "angle" I want to take yet.

I've been thinking about looking at "The Lighter Side of FF" but I'm not sure whether that is the direction I'm headed or not and I probably won't know until closer to the season.

Honestly, I'm not too concerned about where I fall on the page (next to you, at the bottom, alphabetical by last name, etc.)...  I would hope that there would be equal access to all the articles (in the way of headlines or something so an article wouldn't be missed if someone didn't scroll down past yours and Mike Anderson's boxes.

Well, Steve already knows that I am the one (surprise) that wants to write the article about the individual defensive players.

Although that is what I want my main focus to be, there are other areas I'd like to touch on as well.

But for the most part, I'd like to concentrate on defense.

Like they say, a good defense wins championships!!

Of course, I would construct the page thusly.  I tentatively plan to put each writer's "Feature Box" at the top along with a list of all the writers and links to those "boxes" at the very, very top with all the "Pertinent Biographies" below.  But, until I get some volunteers and get down to it, I won't exactly know how it will evolve.  In any case, suffice it to say, it will give fair exposure to all writers and the template I have made looks HOT, if I must say so myself [smiley=awwgee.gif] ... like nothing else out there. [smiley=thumbsup.gif] I was trying to give off somewhat of a "tabloid" effect. [smiley=wiseguy.gif]

Regarding writing an article "as soon as possible," I can't say that I would be able to start on my topic any time soon because Training Camps haven't even begun.

I am looking to do an article on "no-name" players who may become fantasy studs. Though, I can't make ANY "productful" predictions on this until Training Camp...

OK, for whatever reason, I was thinking about the fantasy articles on my drive home from work today.  I've decided on a title for my column... "Trash Talk"... and it will be a melange of fantasy topics.  I actually have an idea for a first article that could come out in the next month or two (I should have plenty of sleepless nights when my first child arrives about 6 weeks from now).

For your weekend enjoyment, I am re-running a classic on our "Fantasy Articles" page.  The current featured article is "Keeper Leagues - the More, the Merrier", my very first fantasy article ever.  It was originally written back in November of 1999 as a sample I sent in to Pro Football Weekly magazine around when they did that interview with and article on me (the link to that piece is also at our "Fantasy Articles" page). I did take the time to look up the word scrumtrulescent in my American Heritage dictionary last week and, much to my chagrin, was not able to find it... With that in mind, I hope it means it's good.   [smiley=thumbsup.gif]

I like the article.  Short snipets on who is doing what.  Dude, if you have the time, I would love to see it every week!  It will be interesting to see how your forecasting comes true.  

I personally think people are casting off Curtis Martin too quick.  One game is nothing,  I think his performance is more indicative of the pathetic offense.

Hmm... what's next for StegRock?  Could it be the first ever musical composition entirely about fantasy football?  I don't think there has ever been an opera with fantasy football (or football in general) as the theme...

Just wanted to say that Jim's piece was very informative, even though I'm not currently playing in any IDP leagues.  I've always subscribed to the theory that you should draft MLBs on bad teams because they will get more chances than the better teams.  I also like to grab CBs who play opposite a lights-out, shut-down corner because they will get the bulk of the chances.

My only gripe with the article is that the NFC Defensive Player of the Month for October, also a MLB, received nary a mention in the article.  I wonder if there is some bias by our resident Giants fan against an Eagle MLB?  After all, he was the one who caused the Kerry Collins fumble (forced fumbles = IDP points!) at the end of the Giants loss to the Eagles.   ::)

Great article and fantasy football fans, offensive and/or defensive minded should read it. It just might enlighten some on how much more exciting a draft can be with all of these potential IDP studs coming out!!!!!!!!
Players like this would expand your league's competition ten fold!!!

And with the RIGHT scoring system, a great defensive player, whether he be on a bad team or good, including shut down corners, would be of value!

If your interested in IDPs, Jim's article on this year's outstanding rookie favorites (and IMO there are more he didn't mention!!! that are worthy in the same breath) in this year's draft would be the PERFECT season to bring them about and try them out!! (did I rhyme again?)

Anyway, point is with articles like that, you've got to cut off somewhere, a top 10 is nice.  Full articles with lists that are TOO long just get inane and burdensome at a certain point.  Yours, Jim, is a nice, quick read! [smiley=thumbsup.gif]

Now, raw rankings lists with little extra writing, that's something else.  Make 'em at least 50 deep,... per position! [smiley=ohshit.gif] ... ;)

Hey!!!!!!! I didn't know you were Barnaby!!!! on here!! Hot Dang!!! As Gomer would say ""Surprise Surprise Surprise!!!!""........thats awesome! Just wanted to post one more time on this IDP article and make sure that you know I think your writing was absolutely nothing less than FANTASTIC !!!!!!! Me being an advocate of IDPs - I just get totally excited to even see the slightest attention brought towards the defensive side of the ball.

Also I hardly get a chance to "talk" IDPs w/ someone else that isn't in my league and so, another chance for excitement in my book.

Hey, You guys are really starting to surprise me now! Jim is Barnaby, Jeff is Philly (whoa! talk about being the last to know),  this stuff is exciting to me.

Jeff really liked your draft analysis in 2004. Its no wonder you have such an intricate basement of knowledge regarding the "whole" game of football including OLINE men which, I've seen you post on a few times here and there - quite impressive!

Get me too excited and I just might start a league that starts nothing but offensive & defensive linemen ;D.

This is great! Hardly these days can you find a FF site that submits FREE FF articles that involve in depth and genuine knowledge of drafts and players on bboth sides of the ball. Absolutely awesome!

Hey Jeff,

Just read your article on WRs and its awesome! In fact, thats why I kept Ash around on my keeper list.
I also kept Donte as well so, looks like I should hit jackpot w/ one of them! There are also some WRs I didnt even think about in which you were able to bring to the table just in time enough for our supplemental draft on the 6th.

I liked the way you took a supposenly "magical" theme around the FF world & the NFL , that being WRs 3rd year in the NFL their breakout one, and paired it with logic by analyzing the NFL team's situation as well. Its clear and precise giving more stability to which wideout may succeed instead of the usual drafting crapshoot these guys can turn out to be - 3rd year breakouts paired w/ the logical analyzing of their respective offensive situation is solid and well grounded information to use when choosing a wide receiver this seasoning.

Thanks Steg.  I appreciate the vehicle you provide for me to share my thoughts.  It could be a real interesting off-season where we could see double the bang for the buck from the RB position.  If LaMont Jordan gets a starting gig somewhere, then you have two starters (Curtis Martin and LaMont Jordan) where there was only one last year.  Same goes for Edgerrin James and Shaun Alexander and Travis Henry, etc.  Couple that with a very deep and strong rookie RB class (the best in many years) and it may change fantasy draft strategy for the 2005 season.

If anyone agrees or disagrees with me, please feel free to post.  I'd love to hear some more opinions on the topic.
