Title: GO Maroons! Post by StegRock on May 21st, 2003, 7:22pm Anybody check out that interesting piece currently second on "The REAL Feed"? Give it up for the Pottsville Maroons, or should I say, don't give up on them! ;) They gonna' get themselves a long overdue Championship! Where can I get some souvenirs, or should I say "memorabilia"? [smiley=laugh.gif] What is up with that team name, though? [smiley=hmmmm.gif] |

Title: Re: GO Maroons! Post by Philly on May 22nd, 2003, 9:10am I guess it's not that much different than the Cincinnati Reds, or the St. Louis Blues, or the Syracuse Orangemen, or the Cleveland Browns... or did you mean the Pottsville part? |

Title: Re: GO Maroons! Post by StegRock on May 22nd, 2003, 12:55pm The colors red, blue, orange (basic spectral colors) and brown are in your basic Crayola crayons small set of like 10 colors. To get maroon, I think you have to jump up to their 96-crayon box. ::) I suppose my (rhetorical) question was more just poking fun at the lack of creativity that went into team-naming back in the day, not that some of the old team names aren't cool. It is just that this does seem to be an area where the evolution of the human mind is very well illustrated, uh, I think. [smiley=uh.gif] ;D |

Title: Re: GO Maroons! Post by StegRock on May 22nd, 2003, 1:30pm It is the short (slangish) term for a supersonic jet, one that can fly greater than the speed of sound. "Supersonics" is actually the name for the science of that. |

That's a reasonable one to inquire about. A "Knickerbocker" is a native (though not Native American) or resident of the State of New York. Strictly used, it denotes a native or resident of New York with Dutch descent. Also, knickerbockers, or knickers, are those short, loosely-fitted old-fashioned pants that men wore back in the teens through the 1930's, roughly. |

Title: Re: GO Maroons! Post by WeinkeMaster on May 25th, 2003, 8:50pm Hoyas were originally named The Stonewalls. I think Hoya means stone or rock in Latin. All students were required to study Latin, so they cheered in Latin. Hoya was yelled so much, they just took the name eventually. Not sure of the dates though. Post by StegRock on May 26th, 2003, 1:08am Walker, don't look at this if you want to keep pondering!! ;) You, living in Chicago, can definitely get ONE of these and probably both of the fairly obvious TWO! Just think for a sec! Notre Dame Fighting Irish University of Illinois Fighting Illini Well, I'll let you guys (try to) figure out the last answer(s)! One is a major, well-known school that is usually part of this riddle (as long as the riddle teller remembers it), but is often never gotten; the other is a totally obscure one that is actually only partially a Division I-A school (only 1 or 2 or so of its athletic programs are Division I-A) and is usually not even included in this riddle. If you want hints, feel free to ask! ;D |

Title: Re: GO Maroons! Post by Cirrinone on May 26th, 2003, 10:03am Well... the University of Alabama Crimson Tide. Then there's the... Tulsa Golden Hurricane. And umm... Tulane Green Wave. That's about it for big schools I THINK, some smaller D-IAA, how about... Rhode Island Anchormen (I wouldn't have any idea what that was if I didn't drive through Providence a few times on the way to Maine), Dartmouth Big Green (I may even be off there... I know I heard somethin like that somewhere, it could be Big Blue or Big Red but for some reason Big Green is sticking), there's the Bucknell Bison, William & Mary Tribe (my UMAINE pounded them ;)), and there's the Hofstra Pride (who my Black Bears ALSO pounded...) I think I got most of them... it's early though.. Bet I missed the "well-known school" Steg is talking of. Haha. |

Title: Re: GO Maroons! Post by StegRock on May 26th, 2003, 1:26pm Okay, there is always the P. U. Golden Shower! [smiley=LMFAO.gif] But, really, I must digress... My good friend there, WeinkeMaster, misrepresented the riddle and when I read Cirrinone's answers, in particular, it dawned on me. Actually, WM's very first answer was invalid according the what the riddle really is. The riddle is... What NCAA Division I-A team nicknames do not end in an "s" AND do not have a color in them? The answers: Syracuse Orangemen, St. John's Red Storm (formerly Redmen), University of Alabama Crimson Tide, et. al., are not valid answers as they all contain colors. The correct list thus far is: Stanford University Cardinal University of Massachusetts Minutemen University of Notre Dame Fighting Irish University of Illinois Fighting Illini Now, given this realization, I don't think my last answer (or two) is (are) the last answer(s). If my memory serves me correctly, there are seven answers: the four above, the one big one I am thinking of, and two others... I think. I do not think, though they pass the test, that any of them are the ones Cirrinone brought up, Hofstra Pride, Bucknell Bison or William & Mary Tribe (or Rhode Island Anchormen, which is not URI, though, as I know they are the Rams), as (I think) they are all strictly D-IAA (But, are Hofstra and William & Mary D-IA basketball? That would make them partially D-IA!), or for that matter, the other one I know, although it could be as I am fairly certain it is a partial D-IA school. For argument's sake, let's say that both of the ones in my head are (as I stated, one I know is); I still think there is one more we would be missing. [smiley=wiseguy.gif] Good luck in the search, men! [smiley=onit.gif] |

Title: Re: GO Maroons! Post by Cirrinone on May 26th, 2003, 3:41pm OOPS!!... I didn't know it couldn't have a color in it and I didn't know it HAD to be D-IA.. Sorry! |

Title: Re: GO Maroons! Post by StegRock on May 26th, 2003, 4:15pm Jon, please, nothing to be sorry about! With the way the riddle was originally (mis)represented, your answers were right on and I still think Hofstra and William & Mary may be partial Division I-A schools and, thus, added to the answers list. Can anybody confirm that? Also, I will bring my post which explains the riddle correctly and where we are at in solving it over to this page... on 05/26/03 at 13:26:55, StegRock wrote:

Title: Re: GO Maroons! Post by StegRock on May 27th, 2003, 1:09pm YES, okay (I see what you did, you consolidator you)! Philly, not only did you get the one I was looking for, the Naval Academy Midshipmen, but you also got the one that bugged me all yesterday and today, the North Carolina State Wolfpack (fuck, that one is pretty obvious), AND you brought another fairly big one into the fold, the Marshall University Thundering Herd, which I do not think was in the riddle when it was told to me. AWESOME! [smiley=thumbsup.gif] (As for Georgia Tech... :-/ ...their official team nickname on their site is the Yellow Jackets... including them would be like including the Fordham Flash while their official team nick is the Rams, I think... again, nothing on this list is debatable at all.) Anyway, any word on Hofstra's Division IA status? I believe they are D-IA at least for basketball, no? That would put them on the list. So, here is where we "officially" stand and I will now add in the other one I am thinking of... Stanford University Cardinal University of Massachusetts Minutemen University of Notre Dame Fighting Irish University of Illinois Fighting Illini North Carolina State Wolfpack Naval Academy Midshipmen Marshall University Thundering Herd College of William & Mary Tribe University of Wisconsin at Green Bay Phoenix ??Hofstra University Pride?? THAT IS AN AWESOME LIST! Final confirmation on Hofstra, which I don't know about, and I think we got ourselves SOME riddle to go away with... an even 10! [smiley=yes.gif] |

Title: Re: GO Maroons! Post by StegRock on May 27th, 2003, 1:30pm O-k-a-y! I went ahead and found out about Hofstra. Yes, they are a partial D-IA school, which puts them on our list, giving us a nice and tidy even 10 as it stands: [smiley=thumbsup.gif] Stanford University Cardinal University of Massachusetts Minutemen University of Notre Dame Fighting Irish University of Illinois Fighting Illini North Carolina State Wolfpack Naval Academy Midshipmen Marshall University Thundering Herd College of William & Mary Tribe University of Wisconsin at Green Bay Phoenix Hofstra University Pride BOY, that makes for a GREAT riddle for gatherings of family, friends, co-workers, etc., etc. Enjoy! Title: Re: GO Maroons! Post by Noey21 on Oct 14th, 2003, 1:01am I just read through this post and there are two incorrect facts in here. 1. The Georgetown Hoyas..Hoya I read somewhere a long time ago is an Egyptian Dog (thus they have a dog as a mascot). 2. The Stanford Cardinal is the color. That is why it is not the Cardinals. Also, just a side note....in the begining the St. Louis Cardinals were also after the color but not any longer. |

Title: Re: GO Maroons! Post by BarnabyWilde on Oct 14th, 2003, 1:15am This is right off the GU website: What is a Hoya? Many years ago, when all Georgetown students were required to study Greek and Latin, the University's teams were nicknamed "The Stonewalls." It is suggested that a student, using Greek and Latin terms, started the cheer "Hoya Saxa!", which translates into "What Rocks!" The name proved popular and the term "Hoyas" was eventually adopted for all Georgetown teams. |

Title: Re: GO Maroons! Post by StegRock on Oct 14th, 2003, 1:48am Anyway, this is a FUN thread overall. The riddle is great, notwithstanding some dubious details. As for the issue of the thread, I am guessing the Maroons were awarded with the Championship. I think it was the 1925 Championship that was in question and, though their web site isn't opening, according to the Yahoo! search I did, it said that the Pottsville Maroons were the 1925 Champions. GO MAROONS... even if it is a bit belated! ;D |

Title: Re: GO Maroons! Post by DirkDiggler on Nov 2nd, 2003, 10:22am AND THERE IS A CONCLUSION!!! So sad for Pottsville. They were robbed!! This was on ESPN on Halloween: Friday, October 31, 2003 POTTSVILLE, Pa. -- They won the game, but the Pottsville Maroons still won't get the championship trophy. People in Pottsville were disappointed to hear NFL owners voted 30-2 on Thursday against reopening the 1925 files and studying whether the NFL title should be awarded to the Maroons. The Pottsville team beat the Chicago Cardinals that year in a game that was billed as the championship. But the Maroons later were disqualified by league president Joe Carr for playing an unauthorized exhibition game against a Notre Dame All-Star team. Thursday's decision came despite a campaign by the city of Pottsville, a legion of supporters in Schuylkill County, and lobbying by Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell. The NFL said it will award Pottsville the Daniel Reeves Pioneer Award in Canton, Ohio, in August in recognition of Pottsville's role as one of the NFL's pioneer communities. ``The award is just something to keep us quiet,'' said Nicholas A. Barbetta, chairman of the Pottsville Maroons Memorial Committee. ``It's like winning a brand new car, then they turn around and give you a broken down bicycle.'' A resolution issued by NFL owners stated that ``the membership recognizes that the 1925 Pottsville Maroons were a championship caliber NFL team, appreciates the city of Pottsville's pioneer support of the NFL since the earliest days of professional football, and understands the continuing belief of Pottsville's citizens that the city be recognized as the home of the 1925 champions.'' ``It was a championship caliber team that ran into an unfortunate conflict with the league's rules,'' NFL commissioner Paul Tagliabue said. ``At this late date, it was impossible to overturn.'' Pittsburgh Steelers owner Dan Rooney and Philadelphia Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie cast the lone votes in favor of the Maroons' request. Pottsville leaders said they were disappointed. ``We thought the NFL would embrace the opportunity to right such a grievous injustice. It's a sad day for a community that has waited long enough to claim its place in the annals of football history,'' said Ian H. Lipton, chairman of the Pottsville Bicentennial Committee, which wanted to see the title awarded in time for the city's bicentennial in 2006. Lipton has worked closely with Rendell in that quest. The course of events that led to Thursday's action began in May when Rendell presented a proposal at the spring NFL meeting in Philadelphia. He suggested that the city pay a $10,000 fine in exchange for a share of the title. Kate Phillips, Rendell's press secretary, said the governor had done some last-minute lobbying on behalf of the Maroons late Wednesday night. ``It was disheartening for the governor because he believed the Maroons deserve the recognition for their championship season,'' she said. ``He will do all he can to help any future action to get the title back to Pottsville.'' |
