Title: Black QB's in NFL (past or present)
Post by Cirrinone on Jun 4th, 2003, 5:38pm
Hey guys, my son's doing a research paper to finish up the year. He's doing it on black athletes who have broken the racial barriers in sports (ie: Joe Louis, Jesse Owens, Jackie Robinson, etc) and his conclusion is going to include barriers that still need to be broken and he wants to do a little on football (as that's his favorite... god do I raise good ones lol). So I was thinking of an interesting tidbit, if we could think of a few teams...

There any teams who don't or haven't had African-American QB's play on their squad (actually play, not just benched)? There are teams who have had several, but I'm only going to name one for each, help me fill in the slots guys!

Cowboys- Randall Cunningham
Giants-
Eagles- McNabb
Redskins- Doug Williams

Bears- Kordell (going to be)
Lions- Rodney Peete
Green Bay-
Vikings- Culpepper

Falcons- Vick
Panthers- Peete
Saints- Brooks
Buccs- Shaun King

Cardinals- Jeff Blake (going to be)
Rams- Tony Banks
Niners-
Seahawks- Warren Moon

Bills-
Dolphins- Ray Lucas
Patriots- Michael Bishop
Jets- Ray Lucas

Ravens- Tony Banks
Bengals- Akili Smith
Browns-
Steelers- Kordell

Texans- Nope
Colts-
Jags- Byron Leftwich (will eventually)
Titans- McNair

Broncos-
Chiefs- Warren Moon
Raiders- Vince Evans
Chargers-

------
I know I'm missing some obvious ones, and I'll feel completely dumb when you tell me... but help us out :)

The first NFL black QB was Willie Thrower.  He played in 1953.  (one game)  He came in to relieve GEORGE BLANDA.  Went 3 for 8.

Second black QB did not come until 15 YEARS later with Marlin Briscoe.

He is the link to the article:

Who was that guy with the Broncos?  He didn't stick, but there was a "good story" to him that I cannot remember at this moment! [smiley=onit.gif]

Got it...  Marlin Briscoe... was called upon to quarterback the Broncos in 1968 after their starter went down!  Here is the source I found:

This thread is becoming quite informative.  We keep this up and your son might just be citing this thread for his research paper! [smiley=awwgee.gif]

[smiley=doh.gif] :-[

Oops!  To make it worse, I even read that sentence!  I'm just a bit [smiley=tired.gif] bleary-eyed!  Finally, finished 6+-months of studying for my "big" day tomorrow about an hour and a half ago. :P Funny thing here, though, physically, I'm kind of falling apart; my ears keep ringing (literally, not figuratively in relation to the "goings-on" here), of all things; they have been for like two days now.  People say I'm stressin'!  I'm just takin' aspirin and hopin' it subsides.  It's really bad, though.  I can't get good sleep!  I'll be fine tomorrow, however!  VERY prepared! [smiley=awwgee.gif] [smiley=thumbsup.gif] Well, anyway, at least I added a source in my post! :D

Joe Gilliam (sp?) was really big in Pittsburgh and started some in the 70s.

Black QBs are interesting to look at (as a topic) because we seem to have gone beyond earlier prejudices.

Another interesting thing to look at is black coaches.  There should be tons of relevant recent sources dealing with that - especially the whole mandatory minority interview aspect.
