Title: Who makes the best head coach...
Post by PrimeTime on Jul 17th, 2003, 5:17pm
A "defensive" coach like Shula, Cowher, Fisher, and Parcells or an "offensive" coach like Martz, Gibbs, Walsh, Gruden, and Shanahan?

If I was starting a team I would take an offensive coach and try to get a good defensive coordinator.

I thought this might be a fun topic to kick around for a few days.

First off - I believe every person should be judged independently regardless of race, religion, creed, or x/o background.  That being said, recently it really appears that offensive coaches with good D coordinators are the way to go.  Baltimore and Tampa Bay being 2 examples.

Nature has a tendency to be cyclical, however.  Therefore, if I was an owner, I would pick a Bill Cowher / Buddy Ryan head coach and pair him with a good OC.

bgsgfan,

Well the old saying is that Defense wins championships so it hard to argue with you.  Actually there are good examples and bad examples both ways.

I just thought of another good question.  Who is the worst head coach of all time?  I would have to say Rich Kotite.  Buddy Ryan built the E-A-G-L-E-S [smiley=eagle.gif] into a powerhouse and he destroyed them in two years.

I noticed your post about the Buckeyes.  I've been to 5 games at Columbus in the past 8 years.  Its a great place to see a game and a nice city to boot.  We always check out some high school football when we are there.  (Westerville and Westerville South I believe.)

OSU is the second best college game day experiance next to PSU [smiley=laugh.gif]  Love Ya Lions!! [smiley=thumbsup.gif]

To address your first question...

I think the best combo is an offensive minded coach with a solid defensive coordinator.  The problem is that there are so few of those combinations.

Welcome aboard - good quality posts.  [smiley=thumbsup.gif]

I'm kind of jealous now, I have only ever been to one OSU game live.  It was 1991 (vs Michigan State I believe) and I sat behind a huge column.  Still, it was an incredible experience.  Just being on campus during Michigan week is unforgettable in itself.  I wouldn't trade my 2 quarters at OSU for the world.

Where are you from?  I moved around a lot growing up, but I consider "home" to be Columbiana County Ohio - very close to both the PA and WV border.  I don't know too much about the high schools in central Ohio, but high school football is HUGE in NE Ohio (and western PA, too).  Basically the whole town shows up for Friday night games for the podunk high schools in the area.  You throw in nearby Mount Union and YSU (where I graduated during Tressel's prime years), the intense Browns vs. Steelers rivalry; you stir it all up and football is basically a way of life.

I was born and still live in the Reading, PA area (Sinking Spring to be exact). Reading is 45 miles northwest of Philadelphia.

You may know the Reading area for all our current pro athelets:  Kerry Collins (QB Giants, Wilson High School), Wade Miller (SP Houston Astros, Brandywine Heights HS), Ross Tucker (OL - Buffalo, Wyomissing H.S --My alma mater), Donyell Marshall (F - Chicago Bulls, Reading H.S)  Just bragging a little bit !![smiley=thumbsup.gif]

I am a PSU alumn, Class of '87 (Yes, the year they beat Miami for the title)  [smiley=thumbsup.gif] [smiley=LMFAO.gif] [smiley=thumbsup.gif] [smiley=laugh.gif]

Every year I go on a collage football trip with my brother-in-law and father-in-law.  That is when I made it out to OSU.  I've also been to Tennessee, Kentucky (saw Tim Couch), Clemson, Virginia (when they beat Florida State stopping Dunn on the goalline twice giving FSU its first ACC loss), and Michigan.

Reading PA and you're a Cowboys fan?   [smiley=ohshit.gif]  Let me guess... you were one of those front-runners who jumped on the Cowboys bandwagon in the late 1970s just because you thought the star on the helmet looked cool?   [smiley=thumbsdown.gif]

[smiley=thumbsdown.gif] to being dictated to by geography when "choosing" your sports teams.  There is only one "local" team among my four favorites from the four "major" sports, the New Jersey Devils, but it really is not about geography at all.

Moving right along, back to the question at hand...

I am going to take this in a bit of a different direction.  I think the best kind of professional sports coach is the "innovator and motivator", Vince Lombardi, Bill Parcells, Jimmy Johnson, Tom Landry, Don Shula, Bill Walsh, John Madden, and even I think Jon Gruden and Mike Shanahan of the very modern era.  The "rah-rah" factor is a bit misunderstood when it is discussed regarding the NFL.  Some take the position that it doesn't matter, that money is all that speaks to these guys.  That's bologna!  It's that inspiring college kids is one thing; it is MUCH MORE difficult inspiring men, BUT still necessary. What about the second part of my question?  Who do you think was the worst NFL coach ever?

My vote went to Rich Kotite.  He destroyed two teams, the Eagles and  the Jets.

Jets   [smiley=firinback.gif]

I think Bum Philips's baby brother, Wade Philips, makes for a pretty horendous head coach.

In my mind, the best coach has a really intense and intimidating, yet motivating personality. I hate to say it, but one of my favorites is Jon Gruden :o (though it's a lot easier now that he's left the Raiders). I love his passion on the sidelines and you know the players are scared shitless.[smiley=nervous.gif] The last thing a player wants is to be on every single SportsCenter for the next week with Jon Gruden one inch away, spitting in his face in one of his classic tirades... [smiley=possessed.gif] The "Gruden Glare" is bad enough! [smiley=annoyed.gif] If done properly, I feel this technique gets the most out of the players as they will try as hard as they can to gain the approval of their "loose cannon" coach. It's a fine line though... push too hard and you can lose the entire team.

My least favorite type of coach is a guy like Mike Martz... nothing worse then some smug prick who thinks he's a genius. Not to mention that goddamn grin on his face...[smiley=hmmmm.gif] If I had a dartboard, he'd be on it. [smiley=bullseye.gif]

I think the two worst coaches I've seen are Rich Kotite and Ray Handley...

I think coaching is all about leadership.....and decision making.  So the best coach motivates by leading in the decision making category.  Men and women will follow and will influence others to then all pull on the rope in the same direction.

I feel that Don Shula was one of the best coaches ever and as far as the worst coach I would vote for Kotite or Henning
