Title: What's your take on the Millen fine?
Post by StegRock on Jul 28th, 2003, 5:49pm
STRAIGHT from the horse's mouth on "the Gridiron Newsstand" and "The REAL Feed" (http://www.fantasyfootballer.com/newsstand.htm), here is Detroit Lions' owner William Clay Ford's rebuttal to NFL Commissioner Paul Tagliabue's hefty $200,000 fine of Lions' GM Matt Millen for failing to follow the leagues new minority-hiring policy:

I think they are simply making an example of Millen.  I think this is more about appeasement than substance, not that I like this new "affirmative action" policy they have adopted.  This really is a microcosm of a MUCH bigger issue, the Pandora's Box for which I really do NOT want to open.  As such, I am just going to give my vote on this whole thing, thusly:  [smiley=thumbsdown.gif] .

I agree wholeheartedly with you Steg.  I understand the reasons behind the league policy, but they took it too far.  When it is so clear, right off the bat, that the Lions wanted Steve Mariucci and no one else... whether they were white, brown, black, redskin, green, yellow, etc... then why put minorities through the ruse of a meaningless interview?
