Title: Externally-hosted avatars on "the Gridiron"
Post by StegRock on Oct 22nd, 2003, 12:51pm
Guys,

I have to bring this up because I have noticed that I have been dealing with it A LOT lately.  First of all, clarification, an "avatar" is the picture you set for yourself in your profile that gets displayed on the threads below your nickname/handle and all your titles and stars and shit.  You are more than welcome, as you always have been, to use externally-hosted avatars (it is, nevertheless, worth noting that I've taken the time to upload over 1,500 of those things for you guys to choose from, though, and yet I see them used little, as I see it, relatively speaking).  The problem is, though, that if that site that hosts your picture goes down or if they take the graphic down, it's a drag on our system here as my server continues to "look for" that image for a while (whereas, the avatars I provide here will work as long as this site's up:  the only time they do not work is when this whole site is down, in which case it doesn't matter, right?).  If you ever notice a page taking an inordinately long amount of time to load and, moreover, if you notice at the bottom of your browser that it's stuck loading "1 item", then you will probably find a missing externally-hosted graphic on that page.  Now, when I notice this, I go into the according profile and "uncheck" the box for that.  When I do that, the image URL disappears.  I don't want to make folks feel bad or create extra work for them, but on the other hand I don't want missing graphics increasing our load times here and making my site ugly, especially when I have over 1,500 of these things taking space on my server.  I have to consider the good of the site as a whole!

So, what would I like you guys to do?  ...  1) Take some time and give a good hearty look-see through the avatar selection I have here and see if anything appeals to you, OR 2) I do host a handful of special "always-used" avatars for people, so if your avatar is something you are not going to change (often), send it to me and I will consider hosting it for you so it always appears (just don't go changing that shit soon or with any frequency... that would be a real slap in the face), OR 3) if you choose to have an externally-hosted avatar, consider it your responsibility to keep tabs on the availability of that graphic as you are potentially affecting a "whole" site, its loading time and appearance, and consider this due warning of your responsibility here and that if your graphic is not working, it will be removed by me!

Thank you for your anticipated understanding and compliance.  I am...

...Sincerely,
Steve Stegeman

While this is an important message for everyone, I'd like to point this one directly at captainpurple.  Fix your avatar already!   ;)  Unless the empty box with the small red 'x' in the corner is your avatar...?

Yeah, sent a message to Steg about that.  Not sure what the problem is, as it comes up fine in a browser when directly linked.  I sent Steg a request to host it, as I couldn't find any suitable Vikings already there.

Sorry for the hassle!
