Title: VERY IMPORTANT:  THE FUTURE OF "the Gridiron"
Post by StegRock on Oct 23rd, 2003, 7:00pm
Guys,

The day has come...  I have got to start considering the future of this place, where it has come, where it is going and how to keep it "going",... where I myself am going (with this), especially in light of ALL the upgrades/additions of the past year and particularly of late.  Also, this is a future I sincerely want all of you to be an effectual and integral part of.  I refuse to litter this site with a deluge of things, ads and features unappealing to or unwanted by you guys,... by me (as I too am a "user" of this site).  I want everything you experience here to have a substantive appeal, to be useful, to be of service to you.  So, as I embark down this road, I want you guys to help me find direction.

At this point, here is what I would like to know (and all I'd like to know, i.e., let's stay focused here so we can go about this efficiently and meaningfully):

1) Do you make purchases via Amazon.com?  If not, is it something you could (see yourself) do(ing)?

2) Do you make purchases through Yahoo.com?  If not, is it something you could do?

3) Do you or does your FF league purchase plaques/trophies, and if so, would you consider purchasing your awards from a well-established, reputable trophy shop on-line?

4) Are you interested in (buying) memorabilia, sports or otherwise, and if so, would you find a high-quality memorabilia shop available to you on-line a nice feature?

5) Are you interested in golf, and if so, would you find the ability to make tee-times on-line a great convenience?

6) Straight up, do you like this site and want to see it continue to exist as it is only to continue getting better (i.e. not to fundamentally and/or dramatically change)?

7) Would making a few bucks for writing FF materials, such as articles or team reports, or by becoming a staffer of an FF web site be of interest to you?

Remember this is the FIRST STEP in the process.  We will cover more bases as we go on.  These are the things I want to know AT THIS POINT based on where I am right now and what I have started looking into.

All of your feedback is valued!  Thank you for your anticipated cooperation and choosing to be a part of this unique and special project! [smiley=bow.gif] I am...

...Sincerely,
Steve Stegeman

1)  Yes, I purchase via Amazon.  Amazon is a massive network of sites now.  More specifically, I use Babies R Us and Toys R Us on line.(part of Amazon.

2)  To be honest, I do not use Yahoo.com to purchase anything.  I truly know nothing about their sites and what they offer.  Would I use them?  I would consider it to support the site, but I definitely favor Amazon.  (btw...Amazon just recorded it's first profitable non-holiday quarter.)

3) Our commish in GBRFL does buy trophies for our league.  They are nice!  My other league is strictly cash.  SO overall, I would have to say I am not too interested in that aspect.

4)  I do not buy memorabile for sports.  To be honest, I am leery of someone saying they have a sports figure signature when I think they are fake.  If you are talking sports merchandise, ie...Eagles Banners, Eagles Baseball caps, etc....  then yes!!!  I buy sports merchandise like that.

5)  I try to play golf on rare occasion.  I just suck too bad to buy anything related to golf.

6)  Do I want this site to continue to succeed and get better?  Is this a trick question?

7)  If I was to contribute to a FF site, in any shape way or form, I would do it because I enjoy it.  It would not be for the money.  If it was for the money I would feel like I HAVE to do it.  I would rather do it because I enjoy it.

2) Do you make purchases through Yahoo.com?  If not, is it something you could do?Same as above!

3) Do you or does your FF league purchase plaques/trophies, and if so, would you consider purchasing your awards from a well-established, reputable trophy shop on-line?I happen to have one sitting on my TV ;D

4) Are you interested in (buying) memorabilia, sports or otherwise, and if so, would you find a high-quality memorabilia shop available to you on-line a nice feature?
This would be a first, but always ready to try something new!
5) Are you interested in golf, and if so, would you find the ability to make tee-times on-line a great convenience?I love to Golf and I would really be up for that

6) Straight up, do you like this site and want to see it continue to exist as it is only to continue getting better (i.e. not to fundamentally and/or dramatically change)?I think my participation would give you that answer!
7) Would making a few bucks for writing FF materials, such as articles or team reports, or by becoming a staffer of an FF web site be of interest to you?Definately, I think I have the football knowledge and the writing skills to make a positive contribution to this site!

Remember this is the FIRST STEP in the process.  We will cover more bases as we go on.  These are the things I want to know AT THIS POINT based on where I am right now and what I have started looking into.

1. I used Amazon.com once with a gift certificate and I would use it again
2. Never purchased through Yahoo.com, but I would
3. My leagues have never used trophies, but I'm not against it and I'd like to see what's out there
4. I'm not big on memorabilia, but I by hats and T-shirts once and a while. I think a memorabilia shop would be cool.
5. I love to golf and I would make reservations on-line if it were an option
6. This is the best FF site out there and I'll support whatever needs to be done to keep it going
7. If I thought I had the ability to crank out top notch stuff week after week, I'd do it for free. As far as accepting money to be a staffer, I guess it would depend on the workload. If I could make a living from fantasy sports, I'd do it in a second!

1. I use Amazon all the time.  Most of my online purchases are via Amazon.

2. I never purchased anything on Yahoo, but I would be willing to try it.

3.  None of my leagues use trophies or plaques.

4. I am not a sports memorabilia purchaser.

5. I do not golf.

6. I love the site and I want to see it continue to grow and get better every day.

7. I would write articles for free and I do intend to write some in the future.  Right now I am too busy with work and family life (3 boys and 1 girl --  football, baseball, soccer, cheerleading, etc)

Good luck and you will have my support in the future of the Gridiron!!

Yes.

2) Do you make purchases through Yahoo.com?  If not, is it something you could do?
No.  Possibly, depending on the merchandise available.

3) Do you or does your FF league purchase plaques/trophies, and if so, would you consider purchasing your awards from a well-established, reputable trophy shop on-line?
No, we don't at this time, but it might happen down the road.  And if we do, then yes.

4) Are you interested in (buying) memorabilia, sports or otherwise, and if so, would you find a high-quality memorabilia shop available to you on-line a nice feature?
No.  But as DD said, I'd be interested in sporting goods or sports merchandise.  I'm not a memorabilia kind of guy.

5) Are you interested in golf, and if so, would you find the ability to make tee-times on-line a great convenience?
Sounds great.  Just wish I actually had the time (or ability) to golf.

6) Straight up, do you like this site and want to see it continue to exist as it is only to continue getting better (i.e. not to fundamentally and/or dramatically change)?
I'd like to see the site continue to improve and change with the times.  I think new features, writers, opportunities, leagues, etc. are necessary to keep this site a living entity.

7) Would making a few bucks for writing FF materials, such as articles or team reports, or by becoming a staffer of an FF web site be of interest to you?
I hate writing and wouldn't do it unless I was getting paid big bucks for it!   ::)

1.  I have not bought from Amazon but pretty sure wide does and has.

2. Yahoo , yes once.  Not against it for sure.

3.  One league I am in has a toilet seat for last place....but other than that no trophies.

4.  Love to look, browse, and yes sometimes I buy......if it is just the right thing.

5.  Ball golf?......retired

6.  Of course.   (Look at some of my past posts)

7.  Sounds interesting.  Could I be a speaker as opposed to a writer...j/k.

1) No I hardly EVER purchase anything online.  Infact the ONLY thing I purchased online was the Patriots Super Bowl video.   :)

2) See above

3) No I think the [smiley=money.gif] is enough.

4) I used to collect baseball cards, but I grew out of that when I was 13. That's when I started noticing girls. [smiley=nervous.gif]

5) My uncle tried to teach me once.  My problem was I could never seem to hit the ball.

6) Of course I do.  If you need $$$ to keep this thing running, I don't mind a few pop-up ads.  Commercialism is a part of life.  I can deal with it.

7) Where do I sign? [smiley=greedy.gif] Seriously, I applied to KFFL recently, but I lost touch with them.  I'd love to do a Pats report.  I have a lot of free time at my current job.

1. I buy online all the time, and would use any site that supported the GridIron (as long as the price wasn't too high).

2. See #1.

3.  We have a rotating trophy in 1, and strictly $$ in the other, so not much need here.

4. As others, I buy merchandise, but not memorabilia.

5. I don't golf often enough to make this very useful.

6. Glad I finally found this place!  Will do what I can to keep it going and make it better for others.

7. Love breaking down games and will certainly continue to do so.

GO VIKES!

To all of the questions, if it's about you generating a bit of expense covering, I don't mind looking at commercials.  I also watch TV commercials and do not feel that it's unfair.  But I hate pop ups.  Banner ads and links are fine.  And if I'm interested, I look at them.  But I NEVER respond in any way, shape or form to pop ups on principle.

UPDATE

Well, progress is being made on this front...  I now have a new set of questions to run by yous.  I will take the time to address/comment on some of the input and comments made heretofore, but not now.  Remember that the spirit behind all this is, as per my initial post, to only include features here that serve you guys and to avoid just having "whatever" pop-up ads (in that case, I wouldn't even be taking the time to ask about all this stuff) and that there is DEFINITELY a "BIGGER PICTURE" being painted here, a MUCH greater vision for this site... and "everything".  Now, on to the next group of questions...

1) If you were to utilize an "Amazon.com" store provided especially for you guys here on "the Gridiron", what kinds of links would you like me to provide?  A general link to Amazon.com's home page (that would be a definite) accompanied by links to specific items, specific areas like "sporting goods", specific deals...?  If so, what or what kinds of items or areas or deals would you like to see me provide direct links to (if possible)?

2) How many of you are in the market for a new "Platnum Visa" credit card (REALLY good opportunity for me here, that's the only reason I ask about this specifically)?  (If this question makes you uncomfortable, skip it.)

3) If you would be so inclined to make donations, would you like it to be acknowledged in the form of a "Member #" type label indicating the amount you've donated or on a "Donators" list or would you rather not be publicly acknowledged at all?  If you would like to be publicly acknowledged, would you rather the amount not be divulged and your name just be on a list of Donators "in general"?

4) Also, regarding donations, would it matter to you, i.e. would it encourage you to make a donation, if I gave a percentage of it to a charity, perhaps like Muscular Dystrophy to which I could "officially" present a check from "the Gridiron @ FantasyFootballer.com" at the Jerry Lewis Telethon?  Or, does that idea actually turn you off?

5) This is going to seem like it's coming from deep out in left field, but as some of you may know, the following involves another internet "(ad)venture" of mine...  Would anything presented on the following pages in particular:

http://www.theenglishmaster.com/English/Employment.htm,

http://www.theenglishmaster.com/English/ProofreadingService.htm,

be of interest to you and/or anybody you know (if you are a high school or college student or know any, in the least the "Proofreading Service" surely should), including the "JOB OPPORTUNITY"?  Point being, that site's taking off bodes well for the future of this site...

...

I thank you all in advance for cooperating and helping me with this project! [smiley=bow.gif]

2.  No.
3.  No.
4.  Yes.
5.  No.
6.  Yes - I really enjoy the direction that the site is taking.  I really don't need many bells and whistles to get the information I need...and this site provides a good amount of that without needing to expand in a different direction.
7.  Yes, but realistically I would probably do it for free.  I enjoy writing articles that I know other people read, and presenting contrary opinions.  You know as well as I do, Steg, that I don't mind telling someone else that their opinion is wrong.

1. I would like links for Music, Books, Video Games and Sporting Goods.
2. I'm not looking for any credit cards at this time.
3. I will gladly contribute what I can, but a public acknowledgement would not be necessary. If the group did decide to make it public, I don't think the amounts should be divulged. A list would work nicely.
4. I think the $$$ donated should be used to help the Gridiron directly, but I wouldn't be upset if a portion of it was donated to a worthy cause. It's all good.
5. I don't have a need for it at this time, but I will recommend the site if/when the situations present themselves.

1)  I would have a general amazon link. Amazon is so large now and a massive conglomerate.   IN addition and more specifically, I buy Toys R US stuff, Video Games, Computer Games, and BOOKS(imagine that).

2) Shit, what is one more credit card.  Sign me up.  It would be good if the card had some benefits....ie 1% back or free starbucks.  Oh yea, the credit card can't be sponsed by NAMBLA or anything like that.

3) If I was to donate, then I would tend to not want to publicly list the amount.  One mans dollar may be more than another mans hundred dollars.  A list would be OK or a special icon type thing by their posts.

4)  NO MONEY TO CHARITY.  If I want to give to charity, I will give to my own charity.  So, I would say it turns me off big time.  I will leave it at that.

5)Nope, I don;t need anyone that needs a professional proofreading service.

About the charity, thing.  I know you're honest.  I'd trust you.  But with all the telemarketing scams that look like charities, many don't trust that.  I know the scam. The telemarketers offfer a big pay out on a contract that has no end date for calls, so once the contract is fulfilled and paid off for the charity, the telemarketing firm keeps calling for years and keeps all the money from the time the contract amount is paid off.  You would not do that, but a lot of people have become concerned about just how much of their donation goes to the charity.  So they're probably just looking for a way to make the forum fair to you without thinking about other things.

I know most people don't want premium services, but I'd pay for that.  I also do not mind looking at reasonable ads.  It's like network television.  Watching commercials is not a big price to pay for the entertainment.  No one should have to work for free.

One suggestion might be the thing other places do.  Free sectors and premium sectors, with ads on both.  Not a problem for me!

Hope I didn't  [smiley=violin.gif] too much!  Just wanna help!

5) No, have no need for those services.

A general link is really the only one I would require.  I'm not sure how it works for you by adding extra links, but if it helps do it.  I honestly only use Amazon to buy books and have never even looked at anything else there.

Oh geez... that's the LAST thing I need.   ::)

I've been to other forums where donations are accepted and I don't like the idea of having a dollar amount displayed.  It creates an unfair hierarchy (perceived or real).  I don't mind having a list of Donors  posted somewhere on the site, but personally, I don't need any special recognition.

I give my time and money to charities that I choose to do based on personal reasons.  I don't think dangling a cause in order to entice donations is a good practice.

I know we've discussed this one on the phone, so I can't really send work your way when those same tasks are part of my job description.  I do, however, have a pretty good sized network of people who may need the services for other concerns, and if they do, I'll be sure to mention you.

As far as employment goes... I have experience with teaching, proofreading, and editing (see above), although we'd have to move past our philosophical issues dealing with the plural forms of numerals and acronyms.  For the time being, however, I would have some trouble extending myself any further than I already am.  If you're in a bind and need someone you can trust, then feel free to give me a call.
...

I thank you all in advance for cooperating and helping me with this project! [smiley=bow.gif]

Books, CD's, and DVD's

2) How many of you are in the market for a new "Platnum Visa" credit card (REALLY good opportunity for me here, that's the only reason I ask about this specifically)?  (If this question makes you uncomfortable, skip it.)
The wife has too many credit cards already

3) If you would be so inclined to make donations, would you like it to be acknowledged in the form of a "Member #" type label indicating the amount you've donated or on a "Donators" list or would you rather not be publicly acknowledged at all?  If you would like to be publicly acknowledged, would you rather the amount not be divulged and your name just be on a list of Donators "in general"?

No acknowledgment needed, but a list of Donors might be nice (sans amount donated)  In addition I may ask you to babysit my kids while the wife and I go to dinner and a movie

Skip it.  Let them get jobs like the rest of us.  Just kidding.  I would keep it for the site.  Once you are making gobs of money, then you can donate.

5) This is going to seem like it's coming from deep out in left field, but as some of you may know, the following involves another internet "(ad)venture" of mine...  Would anything presented on the following pages in particular:

I have 15 years of Finance/Accounting experiance and I would be happy to help you.  Time permitting.

1. Indifferent.

2Credit Cards are the root of all evil 9just ask Jim)

3.  Doesn't matter....voluntarily or charge each league a minimal amount maybe.  a few dollars per player  that won't kill anyone

4.  No charities needed....my wife and i already give and help with time to those that we want to.

5.  N/A

Everything looks great Steg.  I've already informed my wife that any time she wants to buy something online, which is all the time, she needs to come through here.

I'm still using that Lottery Number generator link on the game page (to no avail - it must be broken).  Once I get the thing to work correctly, I'll throw a million into the donation kitty.   ;)

[smiley=yes.gif] In any case, thanks to those who are or are planning on using the service.  I built it especially for all of you and in an effort to avoid littering the joint with "UNWANTED" (pop-up) ads (inconsistent with the theme of the site) that I'm having to beg you all to click like ten times a visit.  I will continue to tailor the store to you all's wants, but I do want to realize a certain measure of success first with what is already there, which I think is only reasonable. :)

I looked into those.  Neither offer the kind of program "Amazon.com" offers.  HOWEVER, I am going to contact them both and see what "ground I can break".  Can't hurt trying to be the first.  Perhaps, a more "auspicious" agreement can be come to since I would be their first. [smiley=shrug.gif]

As the only woman hanging around here regularly (at least self-declared, some nicknames are not gender specific), I guess it's my job to respond to Noey on this one.

If women are considered better shoppers than men, if intelligent behavior includes learning to improve tactics by studying people who are successful at a given thing, if it is UN-intelligent behavior to intentionally continue on forever doing a thing poorly...I think you get my drift.

Shopping at a sports forum with someone else doing all the tactical research for you should work for everyone, Noey!

Bottom-line summation...

If people don't step up, I will surely someday have to step down. :-/

I checked out Overstock.com and like you said, it's pretty much just like Amazon. If you were to set something up with them, I would include them on my Christmas "bid list"... I'm not particualr, I'll go with the best price.

I wasn't commenting on him placing orders, here that is awesome.  I was teasing Jim about his knowledge of all on-line stores.
Buying something just because it is a good price is not smart strategy.  Just my opinion.  If you need it and it is a good deal then great.  If you really NEED it then price shouldn't be an issue.

My point is just spend money wisely.

Sorry if I offended you...but seeing I have known BW for approx. 16+ years and his wife well as long as he has (not as well of course).  I know that neither one of them would have taken offense to my post.

Also, since we are saying women are better shoppers just because they do it more.  Does that mean men are better drivers.....I don't necesarily believe this logic. [smiley=bonghit.gif]

Title: Re: VERY IMPORTANT:  THE FUTURE OF "the Gridiron"
Post by Philly on Nov 12th, 2003, 11:03am
Ultimately, what I think is going on here is:

  • It costs money to run this site.  This makes sense and is a concern for any website.
  • Steg is not independently wealthy and cannot continue to make this site better on his own.
  • People seem to really enjoy this site because of the way it is run and the type of people it attracts.
  • Steg doesn't want to make this a subscription site (like many others have done) nor does he want to flood the site with unwanted (and completely unrelated) advertising and pop-ups (THANK YOU STEG!).
  • People, in the past, have indicated that they would be interested in helping the site financially, if given the opportunity.

Now the opportunity is here and it would be nice to have some of the people who use and enjoy this site step and support it.

And keep in mind that there are ways to support the site and improve it that do not require you to take money out of your pocket.  Spend a couple hours a week and write fantasy articles - they increase the viability of the site.  Or offer your services (are there any web programmers here?) in another capacity.

Or, if you don't have the time to help maintain/improve the quality of the site, try to use the Gridiron Store for things you were probably going to buy anyway.  If you don't buy things online, consider making a donation.

Hey, Noey.  Men ARE better drivers.  (On average.)  That's right, you're hearin' if from a girl (who gets cut off by women in SUVs fighting with kids in the back seat while they stick a cell phone on their ear, and who pull out in front of me and then SLOW DOWN TO 2 MILES PER HOUR RIGHT IN FRONT OF ME ON A MAJOR HIGHWAY.  At least that's what happens in Central New Jersey).

I guess that's why husbands put their wives and kids in tank SUVs before they send them out.

Buy them something more, through Steg's site! :D

Well, maybe not as hard and fast as I thought.  It is coming, though.  The site itself is already ready!  I am actually just waiting for "an approval" on something that I really want to be able to add upon opening and that I applied for a little late... last Saturday.  Once that goes through or not, the Gridiron Store@Overstock.com will be immediately launched.  ...  Ahhhh (sigh),... obstacles to progress... are everywhere... :-/ [smiley=nono.gif] ::)

Okay, enough waitin' for this bullshit, which is what this "extra" thing really is...  I still haven't heard shit back regarding this "approval" for well over a week now (for something additional I wanted to add, but which is definitely NOT a necessity for the Gridiron Store@Overstock.com, moreover to open).  I've been done with the pages for a week now and the holidays are FAST approaching and I need to get this thing opened.  So, expect the "GRAND OPENING" of "the Gridiron Store@Overstock.com" to be TONIGHT. Don't be left out in the cold this holiday season! [smiley=cold.gif] For the holidays, "the Gridiron Store (http://www.fantasyfootballer.com/store.htm)" has just been expanded...  I have added "the Gridiron Store @ Overstock.com" to accompany "the Gridiron Store @ Amazon.com".

So, make sure to do your Christmas, Chanukah or whatever other kind of shopping at "the Gridiron Store (http://www.fantasyfootballer.com/store.htm)" and know that you are also, in the process, helping out one of your favorite and beloved on-line hangouts. [smiley=bow.gif]

Also, know that one GREAT way to REALLY help the site out is to apply for the credit card offer(s) you see.  You don't even have to use the credit card.  Simply get approved and know that a healthy contribution to "the Gridiron" is being made.  It doesn't matter what you do with the card.  Activate it and cut it up if you want. ;D

And, as always, donations are also welcome! :D
