Can it be true? Will Gibbs have the power he needs or will the only problem on the Skins now ( the owner ) keep out of the locker room?

I can't imagine that Gibbs would come back to the NFL as coach of the Redskins. He was pursued by Carolina before they hired John Fox. If he was going to come back to the NFL, I think that would have been the place -- not with Snyder in DC.

Miami doesn't even call around to see if guys like this have any interest. He would be a MUCH better fit in MIAMI. I wish Huzienga would just sell the team to someone who cares about football. He treats it as a business, which it is of course, but comon man!! He has been trying to sell it for 4 years now.

If this happens, then all of a sudden LIL' Napolean looks like a fucking genius. I'm not mad a skins fans, just jealous if this happens. Why have no othere team try to contact Gibbs? Ya never know. Look at Parcells, and Vermiel for that matter. Those guys just returned a call. Parcells actually had told Cris Mortenson when they were watching TV one day, when Jerry Jones came on the screen that "I could work for that guy." The next week Mort had an intereview with Jones, informed him of what Bill said, and here we are.
Explore ALL options before you make a move IMO!

WASHINGTON - The Washington Redskins expect to name Joe Gibbs their coach Wednesday, a source within the NFL told The Associated Press.

The Hall of Fame coach has been negotiating a surprise return to the team he led to three Super Bowls, said the source, speaking on condition of anonymity. The source said the team hoped to complete the deal and make an announcement later Wednesday.

The negotiations were first reported by The Washington Post and CBS Sportsline.com.

The 63-year-old Gibbs coached the Redskins from 1981-92 before resigning to pursue a career with his own NASCAR (news - web sites) team. He has been adamant over the years about not wanting to coach again, although he has retained NFL connections. He is currently a minority owner of the Atlanta Falcons (news).

Gibbs was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1996.

The Redskins are seeking a replacement for Steve Spurrier, who resigned last week. They were known to have interviewed three candidates: former New York Giants (news) coach Jim Fassel, former Minnesota coach Dennis Green and Seattle defensive coordinator Ray Rhodes.

Terms of Gibbs' deal were not immediately available, but the Redskins have budgeted $5 million per year for a coach, the amount they were paying Spurrier.

Calls to Joe Gibbs Racing team were not immediately returned.

Gibbs' racing teams have been among the most successful in NASCAR with two Winston Cup championships in the last four seasons. Bobby Labonte took the title in 2000 and Tony Stewart in 2002.

Gibbs' oldest son, J.D., is president of Joe Gibbs Racing. The former coach's youngest son, Coy, finished 14th last season in the Busch Series standings.

Gibbs had already talked to fired Buffalo Bills coach Greg Williams about the defense coordinators spot as well.

Yep... I honestly didn't think it would happen, especially with Snyder running things from above. This is great news for Skins fans. I'm not so thrilled about it as an Eagles fan.

That team needs some serious help though. They need OL help and 3-6 guy on the DEF side too.

I love Joe Gibbs. I have been a fan for a long time, even when he was with the skins. I'm not a skins fan though. I am a huge Tony Stewart Fan and Like Booby L too. Gibbs is a natural leader and will get the coach of the year award next year when he finds a way to take them to the playoffs.

Really? I thought he showed some potential when he was on the Eagles, but got caught in a numbers game. Apparently he is catching on well in Cincinnati now.
