Title: Giants hire Tom Coughlin
Post by BarnabyWilde on Jan 6th, 2004, 5:07pm
The New York Giants have decided on former Jaguars head coach Tom Coughlin as their replacement for Jim Fassel, several Giants sources told SportsLine.com.

According to Giants' front office sources, Coughlin is getting a four-year contract worth $12 million from the Giants and another $500,000 that the Jaguars are still obligated to pick up. The first year of the deal will pay Coughlin $2.5 million in salary, or one-half million dollars less than the Jaguars were to pay him in salary this year.

The only holdups on an official deal are the final details and certain language within the contract.

The Giants have even gone so far as to talk to some of their star players for reaction and quotes to use for their eventual announcement.

A source close to Coughlin also told SportsLine.com an accord will not officially be reached until team co-owner Bob Tisch can review the terms of the contract and certain stipulations in the deal. However, other top brass within the organization have found the terms to be agreeable.

Coughlin flew to New York on Monday for his second meeting with the team and the two sides then began working on a contract.

"I look forward to working with these players and re-establishing the New York Giants' tradition of physically controlling the line of scrimmage," Coughlin said in a telephone interview with the Associated Press. "I am really looking forward to getting back into the competitive part of it."

The Giants had a slight interest in a college coach such as Nick Saban, but were not willing to go through the tedious challenges associated with dealing with an NCAA head coach. In some cases, NFL teams are forced to deal with not only a coach's agent but school officials such as athletic directors and even boosters as well.

The Giants formally interviewed four candidates for the job, but Coughlin had always been the front-runner. Still, he faced some opposition within the organization from people who feared the stories of his rigidity.

Giants players say they have been told horror stories from their compatriots in Jacksonville. Team brass, however, compared Coughlin to Bill Belichick’s reputation and Belichick was named coach of the year this season and has a Super Bowl victory to boast.

Those close to Coughlin believe he is a changed man and the one-year hiatus from the NFL woke him up to some of the things he was criticized for in the past. Despite the reputation of being completely inflexible, Coughlin is widely regarded inside the NFL as one of the best coaches in the league.

Personally as a Giants fan, I like the hiring. He is a no nonsense coach who can straigten out the team. I am glad he said he wants to return to the old Giants style of smash mouth football. Maybe that means more playing time for Ron Dayne?  ?.?.?

You took the words right out of my mouth,... or the words right off my fingertips,... or the thoughts right out of my head.  Anyway, duck, though, Jim!  The pies will soon be flying at us for even suggesting such a thing.

As an Eagles fan, I sure hope so!

[offtopic]Interesting conversation here!  However, this thread is much more about the NFL "in general" rather than the NFL "as it relates to fantasy football specifically".  As such, it will be moved to a board where it would be more appropriate.  You will find it over on "the Sidelines".  Thank you for your anticipated understanding and future cooperation. Coughlin makes his first coaching move, hiring former Steeler's Defensive Coordinator Tim Lewis.
