Title: Sponsoring on "the Gridiron"! Post by StegRock on Apr 2nd, 2004, 4:24pm This is NOT the current issue about which you received an e-mail on Saturday, May 29th! The current issue on which I want you all's take NOW is in my latest post below! Guys, I was not planning on actively pursuing merchant sponsorship for at least another six to twelve months from now, at best, despite my having put up a "Merchant Sponsor (http://www.fantasyfootballer.com/sponsor.htm)" page (which is available via "the Gridiron Storefront (http://www.fantasyfootballer.com/store.htm)" page). I was pleasantly surprised, though, today to receive an e-mail from someone who might be willing to "work with us" (as a sponsor and/or by way of a link exchange). I know, based on the rough sketch of the plan I have in my head, what the many, very various options I would present to him are. HOWEVER, as per that "Grand Master [smiley=jammaster.gif] Plan" I used to always harp on, my not wanting to litter the web site with "unwanted" ads (or membership fees), and my always asking for your guys' input on such matters (like I did when opening "the Gridiron Store", (re-)developing "the Gridiron Newsstand", etc., etc.), I want you all's take on any of the advertisers/sponsors that I am considering. Within the framework I put together, I want this place to be yours. I want the things being pitched here on "the Gridiron" to be tailored to you all, both for your sake and for the sake of efficiency and efficacy. This is a significant step in the unveiling of the "Grand Master [smiley=jammaster.gif] Plan" that those of you who have been patient and "thoughtful" enough to wait around for will continue to "realize!" So, without further ado, the on-line merchant I was contacted by is "ITicketing.com (http://www.iticketing.com)", located at: http://www.iticketing.com. It is obviously an on-line ticket reselling company. I see it as something that should be of at least some interest to dudes around here. So, what is your guys' take? Please try to consider this from all three critical perspectives: 1) your own (subjectively); 2) others around here (objectively), and 3) mine (as site owner and operator). ALSO of IMPORTANCE, where on the site do you see advertising manifesting itself, i.e., where would you like to see ads go? Title: Re: Sponsoring on "the Gridiron"! Post by Philly on Apr 2nd, 2004, 10:41pm Sounds like a good site to advertise on the Gridiron. It certainly has relevance to the visitors here. I can't promise I'd use it, but if I was interested in finding tix, I'd defintely go there first. As for the graphical logistics, I'm a firm believer in an "entrance page" where you could have links to the different pages on the site. (It's just a personal preference of mine.) With an entrance page, every other page would be less crowded, allowing more space for a banner ad. I personally don't mind banner ads on sites I visit. As long as there are no pop-ups or pop-unders, I'm cool with anything. |

I am going to address three "sponsor" issues, one old, two potential, and I REALLY want you all's input on it all, especially the "potentials". At "the Gridiron Newsstand (http://www.fantasyfootballer.com/newsstand.htm)", I have been part of one commission effort for almost a year now. It is with Sportsfeed.com (http://www.sportsfeed.com/). For every "confirmed" signup for their FREE service via "the Gridiron Newsstand", I potentially make a commission. I say "potentially" because I ain't gonna make squat unless it's EN MASSE, I mean BIG-time. So, it's a difficult one. That said, for those who care about this joint, it's really no sweat off your brow; it's FREE and you can sign up multiple times as long as the e-mail addresses you are using are not bogus and you can complete the confirmation process. Again, I would need like a third of our TOTAL membership to sign up like four times each to make the minimum that they will cut a check for, which is kind of decent, though. I know this is not likely, BUT if YOU ALL ever put your minds to it, well, ya never know. People power! If someone took the lead, it could be done. So, if someone wants to step up and give it a try, let me know and I will relate to you "the approach". Okay, that's that with that... There is another commission sponsorship possibility that has been brought to my attention. It is offered by AntSports.com (http://www.antsports.com/Affiliate/Info.asp). It is more generous than the one above and probably more of what you guys would want. That said, it would still take a significant number of signups to add up to anything. So, it would take a concerted effort on you all's part to get the job done here. People would have to be paying attention as you'd have to click through here to (initially) sign up or your efforts would be a waste. Again, someone stepping up and taking a lead role in "organizing the effort" might make it happen, though. Now, for opportunity #2... I was contacted this past week by an off-shore sportsbook and gambling site, MVPSportsbook.com (http://www.mvpsportsbook.com). Of what's being presented, this probably has the best upswing regarding earnings, BUT, well,... there are a ton of buts! First of all, you guys that have hung here for a while and have come to know me might know my stance on gambling. I am NOT a fan of it, to put it mildly! It's a "matter" of ethics and morals for me. I mean I have no problem with pools or leagues that play for money. In those cases, the amounts are fixed and usually not much. I do not like, on the other hand, uncapped gambling and that whole world. In any event, it goes deeper than that. The commission structure is set up so that I would get 20% of the net losses of those betting via my site. That means for me to earn anything, you guys need to lose... and the more, the better for me. On the other hand, you win, I lose. It de facto pits us against each other and I don't like that. I care about you guys, as people. You have helped me get this site off the ground and I don't want to have to root against you and be put in a position of gaining from your misery. THAT'S JUST SLIMEY! You are my friends to some extent and, hell, I don't want you gambling, period, no less to be making money off of your gambling losses. I would feel like I am just stabbing you guys in the back. In any event, like the other two opportunities, it would still take A LOT of dudes (losing) for it to really add up, but it surely has the most potential. However, that BS is not what matters to me. Who I am as a man and how I conduct my life is more important to me. I refuse to sell out my character and (reasonable moral) conviction. The ONLY way I could see doing this is, again, if we did so as a team. If those who would use the "service" and I together devised some kind of plan where we would pool together any winnings and the 20% commission I get on net losses and we divide it up so as to mitigate your guys' losses and I come away with a 10% or so profit. That's going to take some real organization and honesty, though. I DON'T EVEN KNOW IF THAT COULD WORK. AGAIN, I DON'T LIKE THIS WHOLE BALL OF WAX! I mean, hell, why play all those games (literally and figuratively speaking)? Why all the manipulation? It just begs the question... Why not avoid this whole mess and just give a donation (you can reasonably afford)? In any event,... So, what are your guys' takes on all this? Anyone willing to step up and take a lead regarding the "Sportsfeed.com" and "AntSports.com" ventures? And, what are your feelings about this gambling deal via "MVPSportsbook.com"? |

I remember signing up a couple of my email addresses when you first mentioned it a while back... and I can't say that I remember getting bombarded with spam because of it. So it is definitely an easy thing to do. I'm the one who noticed the AntSports opportunity. I head over there fairly frequently before the season starts to join in on some mocks and to get an idea (from the mocks that are completed and tabulated) which players are in hot demand and which will fly under the radar. So if there are people who are interested in mocking, I can head up that effort. Steg would make lots more money if guys signed up for their money leagues. I have never joined one of their leagues, but I know they are legit and get good feedback. For the sportsbetting... I personally don't have any problem with people gambling. I think that any time you put any money on the line for FF it is gambling - regardless of the amount. Losing is a part of betting. Even the very best lose frequently. If I was webmaster here, I wouldn't have an issue collecting on people's losses. I certainly wouldn't be wishing the losses on anyone, but I'd know they were going to a good cause. I also think by saying when the bettors win, you lose, is inaccurate. Sure, if you look at the opportunity costs it is true, but who says you have to look at it that way. I'd be happy for the Gridiron member who won. All that being said, I wouldn't use the site because I'm not a big-time gambler (at least not while I'm still broke and paying off student loans, mortgage, car loans, etc.) |

I don't know if its reasonable to expect a huge number of sign-ups through here, but as far as being a service/site that corresponds with this one, its a winner. As far as MVPsportsbook, personally the only gambling I do is the occasional money league or office pool. I guess my opinion on it depends on how losses are calculated. If its gross losses, I think its great. If its net losses per individual per week, its ok. If its net losses overall, I wouldn't be for it at all. There are practically endless ways this could be calculated, so [smiley=shrug.gif]. |

And, once one step is taken, the second and third come more and more impendingly, naturally and rapidly. ... We are slowly but surely on our way, me thinks... [smiley=sailin.gif] and I have yet to have to sell my soul to get there, remaining resolute in my approach to this... to life... Just be patient... (and faithful, in both senses of the word).
