What a shame. I liked the guy. He didn't get long enough to prove himself, IMHO. Davies and Faust were both there 5 seasons, and Willingham had better records than both of them after 3 years. Alas, Notre Dame will never be the powerhouse it once was.

I read something about Notre Dame that quoted both Paul Hornung and Tim Brown (alums). Hornung said that they can't be competitive until the relax their admission standards for the star athletes, of which he is a proponent. Tim Brown (who won the Heisman there) says that he doesn't want them to change their standards, even if it means football mediocrity.

Interesting debate.

Anyone know if Stanford or Cal have lower standards for athletes? They both manage to field very competitive teams in numerous sports and have tremendous academic reputations.

Stanford doesn't even offer scholarships for athletes. Not sure about Cal, but both schools standards academicaly are similar to Notre Dame.
