Title: "Bad news" for the NFL
Post by StegRock on May 27th, 2005, 7:15pm
As per "The REAL Feed":

Pasquarelli: Sharing isn't easy (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/columns/story?columnist=pasquarelli_len&id=2069744&CMP=OTC-DT9705204233)

Revenue sharing stands in way of new CBA by Len Pasquarelli

Is the American system so messed up that we don't even know a good thing when we have it?  When the common good devolves merely into what the majority (in power) wants or what any single class wants and can effect a change to, we no longer have a "good in common". :-/ Rampant selfishness will be the death of our nation, maybe not tomorrow, but the wheels are currently rolling in that direction, or should I say, spinning out of control... :'(

The thing is the players of three other major sports surely want the NFL's system to come to ruins.  They want the NFL to come down to their level... and then they won't look as bad in comparison anymore and the new status quo will be lower than the last... and so on.

I suppose that this news is neither bad nor good.  This report bascially says that the perception of what's going on is bad while the reality of the matter is, well, maybe not good, but not bad, either.  From "The REAL Feed":

I'd be willing to bet that the concussions are getting more interest than knee injuries because the brain is considered a more "important" body part than a knee. Anyway...

From the article:

Quote:
Concussions, it seems, are the NFL's dirty little secret. It's not just that they happen so often, but that the league doesn't seem to be doing much about it.

I'm not sure what more the league can do about it. They've already legislated helmet-to-helmet hits and penalize (and fine) players who tackle by leading with their helmets. The helmets themselves will probably never be able to protect the players any more than they do now because of the nature of a concussive injury. I listened to Merrill Hoge today on the Dan Patrick show and he had to retire because of concussions. It was so bad for him that, for about a 4-month period after a concussion, he couldn't leave his house because he was so disoriented that he'd get lost if he so much as went around the corner. When asked about more protection for players and more rules concerning contact with the head, Hoge was decidedly AGAINST it. He felt that there were too many rules governing it already.  [smiley=idontknow.gif]

Yea, I see where you are coming from, Jeff...  But, you know there is kind of a "but" there...  If the opposing army is shooting at your soldiers' knees, you can protect your heads until the cows come home, but it ain't gonna help.  But, yea, there's a middle ground.

This is more like sad news on the present state of our union...  First from ProteinWisdom.com:

"Host hurls Tebow 'Nazi' remark (http://proteinwisdom.com/?p=18243)"

Here's the original article from the Boston Herald:

"Host hurls Tebow 'Nazi' remark (http://www.bostonherald.com/news/regional/view.bg?articleid=1249623)"

I love how this article ends with the totally non sequitur qualifier, as if it's supposed to explain something:

"'In Massachusetts, there's a certain subset of the sports fans that are culturally uncomfortable with the Evangelical Christian subculture of football in the South and the Southwest,' Schulman said."

Oh, gee, that makes it "understandable".  Thanks for putting the hatred in context for us yee-haws. ::)

Look, I've had my go-arounds with, say, the likes of former member MordecaiCourage, and far be it from me to subscribe to the kind of religiosity he espouses.  BUT, to the degree that people don't systematize their beliefs, they are absolutely entitled to them and the general expression of them!  This is the "middle way" I'm constantly harping on and, at least, a good part of the essence of my dissertation topic that yous hear me talk about from time to time.  In any case, isn't that what our Constitution says?  Whether or not I agree with his end-of-the-day metaphysical commitments, Tim Tebow is allowed to wear Biblical verse numbers on his face in face paint and point to heaven every time he scores a touchdown.  On top of it, he's a GREAT kid, and I do believe that his beliefs work for him and help make him the great kid that he is.  So, what's wrong here?  ...  Oh, right, one-sided liberals and their superior progressive "beliefs". [smiley=gimmeabreak.gif] Give me a break!

I am posting these two articles because, in the first case, I agree with the piece; in the second case, I agree with the comments, especially the initial one, which, if you have spoken with me over the last year or so on the general topic of unions, you know says almost exactly what I've been saying...  I've contended for some time now that unions have long ago (perhaps not 100 years ago like the author of the comment writes) come to have largely outlived their (real) purpose (of righting fairly egregious wrongs; now, to turn a phrase, they are just fighting rarely egregious wrongs).  Mind you, given the state of flux in which we exist, I would contend that our ridding ourselves of unions be done with it in mind that they can come back in the future if and when they are needed!  In any event, from "The REAL Feed":
