Title: Jumping the Shark

Here's an interesting piece from Si.com that focuses on some of the Broncos' off-season moves...

Eh... VERY smack-talky!  Words (at least those regarding the Broncos) I can definitely see being eaten before '05 is all said and done!  Not to mention, as I have stated again and again all over "the Gridiron", Rice still looked very good to me when given the chance last year.  I have Rod Smith in the GBRFL and am genuinely concerned about Rice's eating into his numbers.

I'll be very surprised if Rice does anything of any significance this season.  I think he is overstaying his welcome in the NFL.  Maybe we saw different players wearing #80 last season for Seattle, but I certainly wasn't impressed whenever I saw him.

Then, you did not see him play often either because you did not have the opportunity to see the games or highlights or because he wasn't getting adequate playing time, which was certainly the case in both Oakland and Seattle.  He looked tremendous in that Monday night game.  Did you not catch ;) that game?

I saw Seattle a few times last season...

I saw the Week 8 game against Carolina where he did nothing.  I saw the Week 12 game against Buffalo where he was ineffective.  I saw the Week 13 game against Dallas where he looked good.  I saw the Week 14 game against Minnesota where he looked OK.  And, finally, I watched the Wild Card game where he had no catches in their loss.

So, overall, I was underimpressed.  He had one nice game (in a defenseless match on Monday night) that I saw compared to a number of poor games.  I don't understand how he could be underutilized when Koren Robinson missed 4 games at the end of the season with his suspension.

I really think Rice is starting to diminish his career (if that's possible) by becoming a hanger-on.

As I have been arguing all along, that wasn't because of him.  When he isn't on the field (like in the playoff game THOSE dumb-asses LOST), you can't totally blame him, especially when, when he was thrown some bones, he made the most of them.  The bottom line is nobody wants to give the old guy a decent chance because of concerns for the future.  They want/think they need to invest their time in their young guys.  Jerry does not bring with him much of a future.  That's how his value has deteriorated over and above anything else.  He still has great hands,... blah, blah, blah.  I argued this more thoroughly in my Broncos FF-specific team report (http://www.ffpro.com/teamreports/broncos/broncos-footballinfoframes.htm).

That's simply not true.  He had a very solid game against Miami,... just a little known for a solid secondary!  I've detailed this stuff in my Broncos FF-specific team report (http://www.ffpro.com/teamreports/broncos/broncos-footballinfoframes.htm).

Meaning no disrespect to the greatest receiver ever, I think Philly is correct, and it is a fairly obvious call.  Rice is done. Although, it's really hard to root against a guy like him, there is no need to consider him for fantasy purposes.

Steg, I think you are right in that, if Rice was allowed to take a more featured role, he actually might be surprisingly productive.   That seems really unlikely though.

If Rod Smith loses production to anyone this season, it will be to Darius Watts.

Please go back and re-read my quote that you posted.  It simply IS true because I didn't see his game against Miami.  Therefore, I cannot judge his effort.  I don't know if his yards were slop yards or not.  I'm only judging him on the games that I saw - which I very specifically detailed above and very specifically did not mention Miami.

And, regarding his lack of use... there is a reason for that, Steg.  It's not like Mike Holmgren is a football greenhorn who can't see the value of a player.  He wasn't playing because he couldn't help the team as much as Darrell Jackson, Koren Robinson, and Bobby Engram... and that is saying a LOT considering their collective issues.

I agree with JYJ that Watts should step up some more this year and bite into the production of Rod Smith.  I predicted that Ashley Lelie would be the #1 FF guy for the Broncs last year and he and Smith had very similar numbers.  This year it will likely be (1) Lelie, (2) Smith, (3) Watts, (4) Luke or Rice.
