Title: Ethnicism or High Regard?  Indian team names...
Post by StegRock on Aug 6th, 2005, 12:52pm
This topic's been up in the message-board description for "the Sidelines" as a specific example of acceptable topics since day one of "the Gridiron's" existence,... and,... well,... we're finally going to have a thread here to discuss it.  I was at last "inspired" ::) to start this thread by the following article, which made me want to puke, from "The REAL Feed": [smiley=protest.gif] ... [smiley=bs.gif] (Get a life, hippies!)

NFL needs to join colleges in fight, scrap Redskins' nickname (http://www.charlotte.com/mld/charlotte/sports/football/12320167.htm?source=rss)
Sports: NFL / Football -- Charlotte.com (06.08.2005 06:03)
By late Friday afternoon, the headline for the lead story on The Associated Press sports wire read: "Florida State to Challenge Ban on Mascots." It referred to that university's decision to challenge an announcement earlier Friday, when the NCAA said American Indian nicknames and mascots would n...

[smiley=pullleeeeeeeze.gif]

This was the most pansy-ass article on the topic I've read in a while.  The writer, Kevin B. Blackistone, needs to request a higher milligram dosage on his testosterone prescription.

Am I just way off-base here or has America gone so dark with PCBS that we can't even see the light of reason and non-negativity anymore?

And, let's get this straight once and for all...  It's ethnicism, not racism!  That's a misnomer. [smiley=howtoput.gif] Misanthropy is racism.  What hippie [smiley=hippy.gif] got that wrong? [smiley=gimmeabreak.gif]

Yas know... ten, twenty, fifty, however many years from now, the tide will reverse direction.  The "Fighting 'Irish' of Notre Dame" will remain a renowned team name that Irish people (Irish-American Catholics at least) are proud of and the University of Hawaii Rainbow Warriors will continue to pay tribute to Hawaiian heritage, and, all of a sudden, American Indians will be fighting to have their legacy and blood be the namesake of sports teams and all the PC liberals, who can't see the bigger, bigger picture, will be pushing either for Notre Dame to change their nickname, but for reasons totally OPPOSITE the reasoning behind their desire for the elimination of Indian team names now, demands which the pussy NCAA has caved into, or for the white man to honor the American Indian and allow sports teams to be named with valiant "warrior" Indian names like Notre Dame [smiley=gimmeabreak.gif] (when all the while there actually is a derogatory connotation to the "'Fighting' Irish" that (Irish-American) people typically let fly under the radar,... where it's supposed to fly).

Here we go...  From "The REAL Feed":

To Seattle Native Americans, Redskins Are the Shame of the Game (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/01/13/AR2006011301863.html)
Washington Post: Sports (14.01.2006 02:21)
SEATTLE As haters go, Kateri Joe is fairly tame. She does not want the team facing her hometown Seahawks in the NFC playoffs Saturday to be embarrassed or humiliated. In fact, she does not care much about football at all.

ONE quote, "To us, 'Redskin' is the 'N' word."

Would someone PLEASE name a team the "Rowdy Romanians" or the "Slap-Happy Scottish" (the two ethnicities I am most made up of, and, mind you, my great, great grandmother's name was Mary Emma Weed,... yup, an American Indian)?  Or, would some foreign country PLEASE name a team in one of your professional leagues, the "Angry Americans", the "Anal Americans" or something like that, so I can become their hugest fan and visit your country and paint myself in red, white and blue as I go their games?

...

I'm so sick and tired of being held captive by "insecure America".  I get such a rise out of the "cultural and ethnic diversity" people who end up sounding like and seeming to be "cultural and ethnic segregationists" no better and, worse yet, less obvious than the white supremist scumbags who warn of creating a "mud race".  Look, my mom, my dad, my grandparents (especially on my father's side as what was in their hearts was pretty ill), my great grandparents, my aunts and uncles and extended family... MYSELF,... I am not for a moment going to say they... I don't have some prejudicial inclinations (to put it mildly, especially for those grandparents on my father's side),... BUT, hey, at least they were... are IN FACT boinkin' people of ALL KINDS of other heritages and ethnicities and "mixin' it up".  I, myself, am very much in love with and in fact married to a... (take a deep breath now, any deluded PC freaks who might be stumbling upon this, especially you indignant, uptight, pure-breed, clueless whities livin' in your suburban bubbles) "Chinky [smiley=bow.gif] chick".  I guess the PC freaks have to (claim to) "cringe" at that and have to fawn over foreign "novelties" to make up for their "real" lack (in their hearts) of (a desire for) substantive integration.  ANYWAY, just keep it out of the NFL, and don't "enable" (in both the conventional and psychological sense) and inflame people's insecurities. To "euphemize" ;) my point here just a bit, my ultimate question is...  Where does it end?  When do common sense and "reason-ableness" kick in?  This so-called "politically correct" mindset, especially as it applies to sports team nicknames, [smiley=gimmeabreak.gif] can lead to an inane infinite regress, or should I say, spreading out.  I mean do/would hardcore animal rights people, Daoists, etc., etc., have a point (really worth our lending credence to and entertaining) that nicknaming sports teams after animals desensitizes our sensibilities toward them (and, perhaps, thus, has contributed to our mistreatment of them or at least is indicative of that mistreatment,... all of which, mind you, begs the question).  And, even though this may seem ridiculous right now, if we continue in the direction we are in, it will NOT be 25 or 50 years from now.  A ship cannot be turned on a dime.  Assuming we are not already too "far out" (in EVERY sense of the term)... because of our freedom-of-speech trump card and its ludicrous but virtually inevitable residual effects that 1) people should hold (strong) opinions about "things" whether or not it is warranted for them to and 2) all opinions are to be given equal consideration,... we have to "right" it before it is too far off the course of "reason"/"reason-ableness".  I mean, in VERY short,...  Where do we draw the line with this bullshit?

Quite frankly it will never end.  Period.  We live in a "free" country.  Which means, anyone from any country, ethnicity, culture, whatever can live in the "United" States.  People have been fighting over this "bullshit" in their own countries for hundreds, and in some cases, thousands of years.

It doesn't matter if one religion says that this rock is ours, and the other says it is theirs.  Or, if one culture says you shouldn't do that to "our" heritage and the other says "yes we can"

In the society that we live in today, as you stated, we have freedom of speech.  And we also have "freedom" to tell our congressmen to do something about the way we "want" and "pay" for our freedom.  Some of the Indian populace say that they don't want any "United" States collegiate and proffesional teams to "disgrace" their heritage. Me personally say go fuck yourself,  buy your own fucking team and name it the Oklahoma Scalpers, since there weren't any Whities scalping anyone, Im sure no Indians would take offense to that right?  You don't here anyone in the Southeast being all pissed off about the New York "YANKEES" because they're the bastards who killed their great great grandpappy right?

Anyway, getting back to why it will never end.  They will just vote for the congressman, senator, whoever that feels the way they do, and can do something about it.  It will never end.  the U.S. is the melting pot of the world.  When you bring so many different cultures together, to live "United" it will NEVER be "One Nation, Under God" as it once was.  Because, not everyone fears God.

To be bluntly honest, it really isn't to far off to say that ANY religion has absolutely NO PLACE for our "American" politics and government.  I will admit, I am a God fearing man, but that is me.  That isn't everyone.

So, to answer your question Steg, it will never end :-[

Just doing some organizing and connecting of threads on which similar issues are being discussed/argued so as to consolidate the "discussion" for reference purposes and so we don't have to go repeating ourselves...  The following thread is also basically about this same topic:
