Great find and post, Callie!  BUT, I disagree with the writer's assessment of Rice.  I still maintain that Rice looked pretty good and if teams did not age discriminate, he would still be a Bronco,... perhaps a Seahawk or even a Raider.  Teams just don't see any "future" with hiim.  BUT, you "also" have to play "for now" (in both senses of the phrase).  Like Emmitt when he retired, I still think Jerry could readily put up 1,000 yards if given a chance.

Regarding this hang-up with getting Rice retired a 49er,... from "The REAL Feed":

Nolan: Rice probably can't retire with Niners yet (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2005/football/nfl/wires/09/06/2020.ap.fbn.49ers.rice.0433/index.html)
SI.com: NFL (07.09.2005 06:40)

The timing is awkward.  He put EVERYTHING into playing this year.  Why doesn't he do just that and try to help get a team over the hump?  I seem to be the ONLY guy in the world that thinks that Rice can still be a (very) productive on-field contributor to a team.  Right up until the end, when I saw him on the field, I saw a pretty darn good player still.  Why is this?  Why am I so alone in this opinion?
