Title: Football... EVERY DAY!!!
Post by StegRock on Sep 28th, 2005, 4:05pm
I just got done watching the dudes on Cold Pizza on ESPN debate about whether or not College AND NFL games should be scheduled every day of the week.  Of the three guys on the show, TWO LIKED THE IDEA!!!  I'd like to know what you, my fellow HARDCORE football-loving Gridironers, think...  I'm not going to give my take yet (I don't want to "set the tone" of the discussion).  I'll just point out and very briefly respond to this one aspect from the discussion on the show...  The ones for it were claiming that moving games, the vast majority of which are played on Saturday and Sunday, respectively, to other "nights" (they were saying, but I guess they could have meant "days" as well) would reduce the glut on the weekend and, hence, more football games could be enjoyed and the sport ultimately more appreciated.  How really sound is that premise?  ANYWAY, I am REALLY interested to hear you fantasy footballers out on this because there surely would be a HUGE residual effect on our hobby if anything like this were ever to be implemented.  Also, I am curious...  Does anybody know...  Is this REALLY being talked about among the respective "powers-that-be"? ?.?.?

Give ME FOOTBALL every night!!!! [smiley=footballsmiley.gif]

Sounds like a great idea to me.  [smiley=yes.gif] It would allow people to see more teams than they normally would. I myself follow only 2 conferences outside of the BIG games. This would allow me to watch someone else. It would also help grow certain teams fan base outside of the norm!
The same thing that happened when fantasy football leagues started popping up. People started watching certain players and henceforth they watched teams play that they normally wouldn't have watched.
I would love to see it! [smiley=thumbsup.gif]

MC, let me ask...  Would you also like the NFL to play a longer season or even year-round if possible???

Bad idea.  What would happen to the week of preparation that each team gets?

Yikes.

As much as I would love it, I don't think it would be feasable. Players would break down after such long seasons of abuse.  [smiley=stars.gif] Think I read somewhere that the average player is in the league for something like 3 years or so .... then they are DONE! [smiley=RIP.gif] Longer seasons would cut their servicability down quite a bit. I think one alternative for fans of football would be to catch on to CFL action. I know the talent level goes way down from the NFL, but it's still fun to watch. I actually don't mind off season because I follow Baseball and Basketball too. Although...I much prefer to watch football [smiley=footballsmiley.gif] What do you think? [smiley=uh.gif]

I agree with sexy and Mordecai.  As much as I would love it, it takes a good week of practice and healing at the pro level to get ready for the next game.  To try to schedule around that would be impossible.  Is there enough talent at the pro level to spread things around to the necessary expansion teams to meet that schedule?  Also, we could watch European and Canadian pro football, but do we?

I actually do watch a few CFL games every year. [smiley=footballsmiley.gif] Fun to watch...but just not the same as the REAL DEAL!!! I like to try and figure out who should or could be in the NFL.

I live eat and sleep it!
My biggest joys are watching my son play high school football, my Dolphins and my Noles.
Hell I'll watch 3 retarded kids and two fat kids play in the street. I love the game. The greatest ever. ;D

I actually originally wrote this back on September 30th, but decided to save it and first ask my question and wait for your response, MC.  Then, I just got BUSY as hell.  In any case, I'm posting it now.  I thought my point would be made more effectively after the answer (I knew you would give).

MC (and I guess RICKYTD too now), I've got to go against you(s) here, brother(s)...  Your response to my question, MC, about year-round play was a fairly resounding "NO!"  That's really the only answer, and it is essentially the same reasons that you would not want NFL to be played year-round that you wouldn't want it played every day during the season, in short:  loss of (emotional) build-up, increased stress on the teams, making it too all-consuming.  Speaking to the first point, it's the week-in-and-week-out build-up that's got you, ironically, responding the way you are.  The reason you are as pumped [smiley=pumpedup.gif] up as you are is precisely because you've got Sunday to look forward to.  It's the "Christmas" dynamic.  Christmas is as awesome as it is precisely because it comes once a year.  If it came twice, it would be half as good; three times, just a third as good; four times, quarter as good; once a month, eh; once a week, who cares anymore?  If games were played EVERY DAY, all ritual would be lost and it would lose its specialness and build-up.  Secondly, football, on various fronts, among them injuries being one, preparation being another, is just not meant to be played by any one team much more than once a week (or five days).  Those who have played can tell you.  When teams have to play on Thursday, you inevitably always hear the complaint about the "short week".  Third, you can still have a life...

And, as far as the "glut of games on the weekend" argument, spreading them ALL, college and pro, out over a week still ain't gonna make that big of a difference.  Also, your assertion that you'd be able to follow/watch more teams and more players is pretty much fallacious (at least if the premise that games every day of the week would "consume" too much of your life applies to you).  The solutions to the issue you raise already exist in the form of (recording devices along with) digital cable and satellite Direct TV to name two.  Look, watching 12 to 16 NFL games a week, no less dozens upon dozens of college games, isn't happening for most of us.  So, the essence of your assertion boils down to access to the games (not actually watching them all), and that has been solved by way of digital cable and satellite television.  These are the real solutions to the issue you raise, not playing games every day of the week.  You just got to be able to afford it (so, there's a cost one way or the other, cash-wise... time-wise).  Hell, you'll be able to watch games over the internet soon...
