Title: Monday Night Football
Post by StegRock on Dec 26th, 2005, 5:34pm
The 36-year run of Monday Night Football on ABC comes to an end tonight...  From via "the Gridiron Newsstand":

"ABC prepares for last call of 'Monday Night Football' (http://www.usatoday.com/sports/columnist/mccarthy/2005-12-23-mccarthy-mnf_x.htm)"

For me, since I'm not "that old of a timer" [smiley=uh.gif] ... ;), it really just means flicking to a different (monolithic) station on Monday night.  I will say this much...  This whole development sheds an interesting light on these "old threads" we keep deep in our closet here on "the Gridiron":

"Madden to leave MNF... (http://www.fantasyfootballer.com/cgi-bin/theGridiron/YaBB.cgi?board=58;action=display;num=1118875703)";

"MORE Monday Night Football!!!!! (http://www.fantasyfootballer.com/cgi-bin/theGridiron/YaBB.cgi?board=58;action=display;num=1071206926)".

It just goes to show you the (ever-present potential for) shallowness of journalism... :-/

...

Anyway, do any of you, especially our more senior [smiley=wiseman.gif] members who perhaps recall the early days of ABC's Monday Night Football, have any thoughts??? [smiley=idontknow.gif]

My favorite MFN memory is a picture (from TV Guide) that my Bear buddy had literally framed and hung in his living room.  It was a caricature of Howard Cosell with a football jammed in his mouth.  He obviously did not like Howard Cosell.  Maybe this is not what you were looking for, but the great football moments were specific to the games.  This is about the things specific to the show in its glory.

P.S.  I actually liked it when Dandy Don sang "Turn Out the Lights."

I've watched most every MNF game since it's inception. If I had to put a percentage on it...I'd guess around 90% of them.  That's 9 in 10 for any percentage illiterates that may be out there. My favorite game of all time just happened to be on MNF in 1978. Let's just say Earl Campbell was, and still is the man!! [smiley=footballsmiley.gif]

Remember this classic?

MNF has been a BIG tradition in my life.  I don't care if its the  3-11 Saints versus the 4-10 Lions, or if it's on ABC or ESPN. I still get off of work, anxiously awaiting 6:05 pm for first kickoff.

I have been watching MNF since I was 10.  So that would make it 20 yrs..hehe.  Anyway, my most vivid MNF memory was when I was 12 (and that year I had just made my  "commitment to excellence" with my step-dad), and the raiders new savior named Bo Jackson busted out a 91 yd TD run and "ran all the way to Tacoma"

http://espn.go.com/abcsports/mnf/s/classic/bojackson87.html

I was hooked ever since.  And thats why I watch it.  You just never know when something special is going to happen.

I still watch MNF, but it has lost a lot of its luster for me.  I grew up with Dandy Don, Frank Gifford, and Howard Cosell in the booth.  Cosell made MNF and there will never be another one like him.  One of the biggest draws was Cosell's halftime highlights (which you can now get round the clock on one of the 37 ESPN channels).  Back then this was the only place to see them (unless you waited until the following weekend to watch NFL Week in Review - narrated by Harry Kalas).  Also Cosell's on-going feud with the Jockocracy (athletes turned journalists merely because of their status as an athlete) was classic.  The game itself was almost a sidebar. The move to ESPN will hopefully mean the end of the tiresome Hank Williams, Jr. "Are You Ready..." intros.  Maybe they'll also kill the Tim McGraw halftime nonsense. But I'm sure it will look and feel pretty much the same.   :-/

How about this odd "sports trade"?  ...  As we philosophers might say,... we're now into the realm of "meta-sports transactions". [smiley=nerd.gif] From "The REAL Feed":

NBC trades sports rights, Oswald to get Michaels
(http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=2324417&campaign=rss&source=NFLHeadlines)
ESPN: NFL (09.02.2006 15:00)
Al Michaels is headed to NBC after ESPN hired Joe Theismann, Tony Kornheiser and Mike Tirico as its Monday night broadcast crew.

So,... Michaels and Madden will remain together after all.

I'll be interested to see how well T.K. cuts it in the MNF booth.

Me personally, think it is a BRILLIANT move by NBC.  Not only is America in love with "Madden & Michaels" they will get better ratings on Sunday Night Football then ESPN will ever get on Monday Night Football.

The ratings will tank for MNF.  And only get better with SNF for the next 3 years or so.  NBC will buy out ESPN for the rights to MNF and we get to see one of our most dearest memories of television history barderred off to the highest bidder.

Disney is biteing off more than it can chew IMO and its sad to see a great game that we all love treated like a peice of paper. I mean really, I don't think there is a single product ever produced by disney that was free. Until it bought ABC. But now, that is beginning to change.

Is it me or is Tony Kornheiser too whiny and WAY TOO NASALLY to be in the booth???  It just doesn't seem to me that the booth fits him or that he fits the booth...
