Title: 2009 NFL Playoffs
Post by StegRock on Dec 28th, 2008, 11:29pm
It seems to me that there are an inordinately high number of low-seeded teams this year to reckon with.  Outside of perhaps the Cardinals, I think in both conferences there are lower seeds that could really "upset" things.

Anybody else,... thoughts?

Vegas agrees... all 4 road teams in the wild card matchups opened as the favorites, justifiably so in my mind.

Your ex-Colt beat writer is looking for a big time upset in San Diego this weekend. Other than that, I agree with the road-fest. The lack of a Colt running game will rear its ugly head. Also San Diego offensively up front is really getting it done. They made the bronks( Sorry Steg) look like a pop warner team last night.

To wit, there it is rolling off "The REAL Feed":

Home disadvantage: Road teams favoured in opening round of NFL playoffs (http://slam.canoe.ca/Slam/Football/NFL/2008/12/29/7876681-ap.html)
SLAM! Sports NFL (29.12.2008 20:15)
The Indianapolis Colts ended the regular season on a nine-game winning streak, earning the designation as a team no one would want to meet in the playoffs.

But, when it comes to the Super Bowl, Vegas is playing it closer to the vest:

Vegas favours Giants, Titans (http://slam.canoe.ca/Slam/Football/NFL/Playoffs/2008/12/29/7874231-ap.html)
SLAM! Sports NFL (29.12.2008 14:53)
Las Vegas sports books favour the New York Giants over the 11 other teams in the NFL playoffs to win the Super Bowl, giving 2-to-1 odds on the NFC's No. 1 seed to repeat as champions.

Just a quick point of clarification, though the Vegas odds semi-support my position, what I was saying is not entirely consistent with the indications of the Vegas odds.  By lower(-seeded) teams I meant the teams playing road games this upcoming week plus the two lower-seed home teams, mainly the 8-and-8 Chargers who I definitely had in mind when typing up my original post here (Arizona being the only clunker of the six).  I really feel that whoever wins that Colts-Chargers game could be a force with which to reckon.  We'll see soon enough...

Here in Indy I have been saying to every Non-Steeler fan that will listen; If the Colts win the Super bowl this year, it would be the toughest road to the championship ever.

RD 1: Across the country with one less day of practice to play a very HOT Charger team.

RD 2: Travel to Pittsburgh and play a very Physical Steeler team.

RD 3: On the road at Tennessee or at home against Baltimore.

Then they get the Giants.

When you put it like that, it seems very unlikely.

In the AFC I like the Steelers to roll. Thats not a homer thing either. I also, against most public opinions like the Tennessee Titans to really roll up the Ravens as well. I know the Raves are playing well, but it just seems that the Titans will swell up.

In the NFC I sort of like the Panthers to win. and If I am to pick an upset it would be the Phillies over the Giants.

Call me crazy!

Steg's [smiley=palmtree.gif] Super Bowl predictions...

Rich [smiley=sophisticate.gif] man's choice...  Steelers vs. Giants

Poor [smiley=twocents.gif] man's special...  Chargers vs. Eagles

While "I suppose" that my rich man's choice got a shot in the arm of sorts here today, [smiley=stilldunno.gif] my poor man's special received a statistical death blow.

both my picks for the super bowl are out as of saturday nite.  i thought the Ravens could compete with the Titans...but did not foresee a total implosion by the Panthers.  [smiley=doh.gif] well it hat's off to Kurt Warner and the Cardinals.   [smiley=havinablast.gif]two playoff victories in one season?  there is not one person in St Louis that saw that coming.  we all thought Kurt had sold his soul to the devil in 1999.  [smiley=demon.gif] i would think payment would be do by now.  he is simply amazing. Want to rethink that? :)

I had Carolina winning the NFC, so hats off to the Arizona "no one gave us a snowball's chance in Phoenix" Cardinals.

I also had Tennessee winning the AFC, so in one day both my picks leave the building. See ya next year Elvis.
