Title: United Football League
Post by StegRock on Mar 11th, 2009, 3:53pm
WTF is (up with) this? ?.?.? From "The REAL Feed":

Green among ex-NFL coaches joining UFL ranks (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2009/football/nfl/03/11/ufl-coaches.ap/index.html?eref=si_nfl)
SI.com: NFL (11.03.2009 14:10)
Former NFL coaches Dennis Green, Jim Fassel and Jim Haslett will lead teams in the new United Football League.

Here's their web site:  http://www.ufl-football.com/.

Has anybody heard about this thing before right now?  What's the point?  Is it due to the demise of NFL-Europe?  Is this the alternative "minor league" now being offered up (but it doesn't seem to be connected with the NFL at all)?  Are they for real?  Anybody...???

Here are a couple LOCAL pieces coming out of the Bay Area about the UFL... rolling [smiley=rollin.gif] off "The REAL Feed":

New football league to play local game (http://www.sacbee.com/sports/story/1692576.html?mi_rss=Sports)
The Sacramento Bee: Sports (12.03.2009 02:10)
SAN FRANCISCO – The United Football League won't attempt to topple the NFL. But the new league would love to settle in San Francisco if the 49ers build a stadium in Santa Clara."The Niners have made it clear that they want to be in San Jose, elsewhere," said Paul Pelosi, owner of the UFL's S...

Yeah, it's legit. Michael Hughyue, former GM for the Jags and a guy I worked with in the NFLPA is heading it up. It's not the "minor league" for the NFL that Roger Goodell has talked about with the demise of NFL Europe... it's its own separate entity. I'm surprised that they're going to move forward with only 4 teams this fall (and the mere fact that they're playing in the fall helps to spell its future).

The interesting thing about this league is that it could become home for the likes of Michael Vick (if the NFL doesn't warm up to him) or even Pacman Jones (who, ironically fired Michael Hughyue as an agent once his legal issues arose).

There's some solid football sense and some money behind it, but again, I doubt there's room for more product.

Nice analysis, Jeff, [smiley=thumbsup.gif] and presentation of some of the possibilities and facts of the matter.  But, I must admit, for me legitimacy, at least in this milieu, entails sustainability.  In that sense, isn't there something oxymoronic to your post above (in which case, how would you adjust it)?
