Even though we had a thread dedicated to this topic, I thought the announcement of this GREAT news merited being appended to this one...  From "The REAL Feed":

Even if not downright "good news" per se, it's at least a hell of a lot of fun to day-dream about...  From "The REAL Feed":

The NFL has yet to release the 2006 regular-season schedule, but Monday, the league issued a sneak peek at some of the more notable match-ups to look forward to. Keeping with recent tradition, the Super Bowl champion Pittsburgh Steelers will...

Not so sure this is how I envision the gap between East and West, America and China specifically, being bridged, but... here it is...  From "The REAL Feed":

NFL considering playing preseason game in Beijing
ESPN: NFL (29.03.2006 17:01)
Commissioner Paul Tagliabue said Wednesday the league is
considering playing a preseason game in Beijing next summer, one year before the Olympics are staged there.

American football is SO VERY Americana, despite baseball's being our "national pastime".  It's a very "involved" game, I would say, furthermore, in a distinctively American way, and not cheap to do right, mind you.  I don't think, vis-a-vis basketball, baseball and soccer, it will ever be a great candidate for a "World League" sport.  I think it will always have trouble vying for hearts and minds the world over.  At least, it's going to have a hard time finding an audience in a 1) culturally, politically, socially, etc., isolated country like China, 2) whose values are derived from a yin-yang tradition that does not put much stock in a "might is right" mindset, which is quite a bit at the heart of American football, as it was for our ancient Greek predecessors and their gladiators. In short, China does not have a "gladiator" tradition.

I think this is indirect "good news"...  From "The REAL Feed":

Tougher penalties go into effect for steroids dealers
ESPN: NFL (29.03.2006 20:15)
Drug dealers, coaches or athletes who distribute steroids could now face harsher sentences after the government made an "emergency" change to its federal sentencing guidelines.

Definite "feel good" story here...  From "The REAL Feed":

Favre, McNair give $150K to Miss. football programs
ESPN: NFL (31.03.2006 16:48)
Brett Favre and Steve McNair, in connection with the NFL Youth Football Fund, have handed out 20 checks totaling $150,000 to help local football programs in south Mississippi recover from the devastation of Hurricane Katrina.

Again, as per my post above, I don't really know if this is good news or not...  But, I think we think it is...  From "The REAL Feed":

NFL ponders two regular-season games abroad
FOXSports.com :: NFL (27.05.2006 14:31)
The NFL has proposed playing two regular-season games outside the United States starting in 2008, league officials said Saturday.

Mark Waller, head of NFL international development, said the proposal to play abroad was put to team owners Tuesday in Denver. It came after the 49ers and Cardinal...

"American" football is so American that I just see the spread of the NFL (if it were to succeed, a big IF, mind you) giving the "international" community yet one more reason to play the "American hegemony" card, which sucks.

I don't know if this is "good", per se, but it's interesting...  It's a spreading-out of the NFL to a place (unlike China) where I think the NFL has a fighting chance to catch on (in the not-so-far-off) future...  From "The REAL Feed":

This is gotta be considered "good news", right?  ...  From "The REAL Feed":

ESPN: NFL (27.06.2006 12:30)
The NFL has added amphetamines to the list of performance enhancing drugs banned by its policy against steroids and related substances and, beginning with the 2007 season, will toughen sanctions against players who test positive.
