Well, well, well,... and ho, ho, ho... Steg-santa's come, alas, bearing gifts... It's been OVER a YEAR AND A HALF since this thread got started, and here I am, at long last, to commence presenting my MOST TREASURED Top 5. It is EXTREMELY worth noting that where there might (have) be(en) any slight seeds of doubt in the prior 35, THERE ARE NONE TO BE FOUND HERE (with the minor exception that #'s 2 and 3 are real tight, so much so that based on my mood (they both appeal to VERY different moods) at any given moment, they could flip-flop). These are songs which just do "it" for me. I will NEVER get bored of them. I can (pretty much, as is humanly reasonable) listen to them over and over. And, when listening to them, I'm not NOT going to "participate" in the song,... singing ( not necessarily a good thing ), dancing ( ), rocking ( ), bobbing, ( ), gyrating ( ),... something. Without further ado, let's get to it... Drum roll, please... Steggie Steggum's Top 40 Countdown #5... What a contrast to #6 this is going to be... This song is by a sincerely sinister (sinistere, to invent a word) artist/group of artists. This dude, they and this song really do give me the willies, and, perhaps, it's that "edge" that adds to the song's draw and puts the song over the top for me as one of my UNDENIABLE ALL-TIME FAVORITES. That having been said, it's still not a song/an album I listen to before going to bed. The tune of the song does not have a soothing, nighttime, restful ambiance, in any event. In every way, shape and form, this song is not a "put you to bed" song; it's a "rev you up" tune, for sure (but, mind you, it is NOT speed metal). When you listen carefully, the lyrics, the insidious story of the song, however, cannot NOT make you at least a bit... Despite our over-sexualized, yet in-the-closet American culture, the image of defiling a daughter and flaunting it to mom and dad, egging dad on to join in in fact has to elicit a... even to the less sexually moral of us. ... Moving right along, this is another one of these "chaser" songs on my list, meaning it was a song that I had heard on the radio and then chased after at least a good five years, not knowing the title, the artist(s), anything, and since I hold a tune like a wounded duck, seemed more deaf than deft when trying to "convey" it to music store clerks. That image too deserves a... ... Anyway, buckle yourselves in and have at this TREMENDOUS tune,... but as it is approaching bedtime back there on the east coast, do remember that this may not be the tune you want to be listening to... unless you want to be up all night... pumped up... AND perhaps a little spooked... The singer's voice is just awesomely haunting. ... I will, as always, but even more so since this is now my most coveted Top 5, be interested to see who, if any, of you have your hairs stand up on the back of your neck (not just by the song itself, but) by getting "taken back" by this "truly cult" classic... A least a few of you have GOT to remember (jammin' to) this ass-kicker... http://www.ffyi.com/stegsmusic/5.htm (as should be expected, the songs can take quite a bit of time to load in the player; they are set to start AUTOMATICALLY when fully loaded).

Guys, question... Do any of you have an audio file of Linkin Park's "In The End" that you could "share" with me? JYJ had it on his favorites list, but he took everything down long ago. Anyway, if you do and wouldn't mind "sharing" it with a "friend", just go ahead and send it to my e-mail address here. Thanks in advance! Also, #4 of "Steggie Steggum's Top 40" will be coming atchyas first thing this summer (break)!

To be totally honest, soon after shutting my computer off for the night last night, it dawned on me that you were (probably) indicating "In The End" as in "In The Rear End" (I parenthesize "probably" because I really do not know the lyrics of the song well and, thus, wasn't 100% sure). I wasn't going to turn my computer back on just for that, and, as parenthetically aforestated, I ultimately wasn't 100% sure. In the case that it was something regarding the lyrics, I still wanted to reserve my right to be cranky , but since I now know what you meant,... ...

Gino took care of my need for "In the End", so... Anyway,... you guys know about that A&E show God or The Girl? I really didn't catch much of it. But, I saw the tail end of it last night and, in any event, in the trailers you get to hear the theme song. It's great! Gino and I went hunting it down last night and found it. The song is titled "Flood" by this Christian rock band Jars of Clay. I know... I (too) have a really hard time getting into Christian music of any kind, including Christian rock. The lyrics are usually just too corny for me. But, this song flat-out rocks, lyrics and all. Do any of you know this tune??? Bottom line, if you can get a listen, DO SO! Good tune!!!

| Man, I will testify to this Steg.....you (meaning all you out there in Gridiron land) should expand your music tastes and tune in to the Contemporary Christian music genre. There are alot of great bands out there that musically are on par with anything in secular music land. Jars Of Clay is just one of many bands that sound that good...The only diffence is the message lyrically...the sound instumentally speaking is great. I would suggest trying a few bands like Casting Crowns...Chris Rice....Steven Curtis Chapman....Mercy Me, and Third Day for starters. Great music, even greater message! Dive in..the waters fine.

Talk about "diversity"... with #5 there and then my mentioning the Jars of Clay tune... It's about as "on the opposite side of the fence" as you'll get. BOTH fantastic tunes! #5 just straight-up rocks... #4 will continue to display Steggie's penchant for variety... So,... without further ado, let's get to it... Drum roll, please... Remember we are in my BELOVED Top 5 here... Steggie Steggum's Top 40 Countdown #4... This is another one of these songs I was in search of for years. It is also another one that hearkens back to the early days of MTV, you know, when they played music. I had seen the video for this song as a kid, was like... and spent just shy of 20 years to nail it. I knew who did the song, but didn't know the title and it wasn't quite "Top 40" enough to be easy to find. I purchased two albums down through the years thinking this song was on them. WRONG! About five years ago, the internet finally came to the rescue. I was literally like... and then... when I finally found this song. It was like I was being reunited with my 10-year-old self. ... With this tune, my penchant for strong, catchy, but simple guitar riffs is again on display. The guitars in this song are distinctive. You'll likely know 'em once you hear 'em. BUT, this is of yet another genre that we haven't heard on the countdown for some time (if, specifically, at all). This tune, as I see it, or should I say hear it, is, HANDS DOWN, the BEST tune of this "popular" type of music that was born in the '80's. There is NO "poppy" song like this that never wears its welcome with me like this ONE. The vocalist was one of the best; the band, one of the most talented, for this "popular" genre, at least. This tune will "kick" off your week just right, so let's get to it. ... One quick shout out... and upward,... M.H., you won't easily be forgotten, friend... You're going to get a bunch of dudes weeks off on the right foot right here today... http://www.ffyi.com/stegsmusic/4.htm (as should be expected, the songs can take quite a bit of time to load in the player; they are set to start AUTOMATICALLY when fully loaded).

Well,... GOOOOOD MORNING, GRIDIRON!!! I've got some sweet bonus tracks for those of you who have been "tracking" Steggie Steggum's Top 40. Yous know... I started this countdown almost 27 months ago, meaning, since I had, as I stated, established the list before even starting to publish it here, which was about a year-long process, that the initial thought that went into this dates back like almost 40 months ago. "Steggie Steggum's Countdown" itself is... By the time I actually post my oh, so beloved #1, we're talkin' about bein' probably around or over four years since I first started work on this project. Given this development, I would like to give yous all a little bonus treat before getting to the business of posting my,... I know,... much-anticipated TOP 3... I'm "dubbing" these tracks the "Unlucky 'Lucky 7'"!!! This is so in the following sense. These tunes are, by and large, new(er) songs, at least new to me, that 27 to 40 months ago I didn't think or the songs in fact hadn't "stood the test of time" for me. That and, perhaps, there was no "story" behind the song (at the time) making it special to me. That was particularly true for one song. In any event, these songs would all contend for a spot on "Steggie Steggum's Top 40", not nearly this high, though one of them may knock on the door of the Top 10, and if I extended to 50, all seven would be in the countdown. So, without further ado, it's Thursday (for most of yous), the weekend is nearly upon us... You've got some new FF-specific team reports rollin' off the presses, and we're all involved in a draft or mock draft somewhere. So, while you're readin' a report or workin' on a draft, kick back and enjoy these aural goodies... Steggie Steggum's "Unlucky 'Lucky 7'" (in no particular order) 1. This song is one of those not new, but new to me tunes. It actually came up earlier on this thread. AWESOME tune from an off-the-beaten-"track" genre for most of us,... me for sure! It's a real, notable contrast to #5, in any event... ... http://www.ffyi.com/stegsmusic/I.htm (as should be expected, the songs can take quite a bit of time to load in the player; they are set to start AUTOMATICALLY when fully loaded). 2. This is the tune that I mentioned above that could maybe contend for a Top 10 spot. I believe it is a fairly new song. I LOVED it from the first time I heard it back when it was a radio hit (which I don't remember exactly when that was). It is another one of those "in search of" songs. I didn't know its title or who it was by. It was only through my fortuitously hearing it on the radio a couple months ago, and remembering enough of it's hook (I mean JUST enough,... like four words and the fact that for a "love-oriented" song, the gender is reversed, so to speak (not gay, though)) to be able to find it(s) title and lyrics via a link buried on Yahoo!'s search engine. Smooooooth tune... http://www.ffyi.com/stegsmusic/II.htm (as should be expected, the songs can take quite a bit of time to load in the player; they are set to start AUTOMATICALLY when fully loaded). 3. This ROCKIN' tune was actually on Junkyard Jake's music list that he had posted here (and that I think he still has up at his site). At the time, it was just a kick-ass tune, but it didn't have any special meaning for me. Well, as per a request for the song I made not too long ago, it ACQUIRED BIG-time meaning for me. Here and there, here, you guys may remember hearing about this over-the-top NIGHTMARE of a class in Symbolic Logic I had last semester. It was stupid-difficult. -> I digress... There is a Ph.D. student in the program here from India, Gopal. He actually has his MASTER'S in LOGIC. The requirement of this class had been waived for him, BUT he took it, anyway, FOR FUN, as an elective. To make a WAY TOO LOOOOONG story short, he struggled to get a B+,... which is what I got too, which further goes toward showing how f'd up this class was (mind you, that wasn't the highest grade, but,... again,... pudding... proof...). I mean I like and am pretty good at Logic (was like top 5 in the class at Catholic U.), but, come on... I ain't got no MASTER'S in it. Anyway, back to the song,... this song became like my and this guy Eric's anthem for this class. Just use your imagination and tweak your understanding of the words to be talking about "UH's PHIL 445 - Symbolic Logic" taught by Dr. Mary Tiles instead of a bitch girlfriend who left you hangin', and you will be where I was... am. I still have occasional flashbacks and night-sweats. I am damaged goods because of this class. Dr. Tiles was famous for playing Bach (besides a 600-page logic book, we were working through the 750-page Gödel, Escher, Bach) for us at the beginning of class. Well, last class, I brought my laptop in and,... well,... as everybody was walking in, played THIS... ...headbanger... http://www.ffyi.com/stegsmusic/III.htm (as should be expected, the songs can take quite a bit of time to load in the player; they are set to start AUTOMATICALLY when fully loaded). 4. Of this short list, this is the newest tune. Bottom line, I'm not much of a singer, but there are certain dudes and styles I can do,... mimic well (somehow) at least. (An older, as in The Black Album) James Hetfield is one of them. Unbelievably, given the genre,... this guy, and this song, especially, is another. When it first came on for the first time with my wife and me in the car together and I belted it out, she actually sat there, mouth agape, in shock at how well I was whippin' this thing out, at least the hook and the lines of verse I could make out (you'll know what I mean ). She was like... ... ... This is just one of these rare songs from this genre that's going to stick. Mind you, this guy has some other tunes that are arguably better/more popular, but none of them would have a chance at my Top 40 or 50 like this... http://www.ffyi.com/stegsmusic/IV.htm (as should be expected, the songs can take quite a bit of time to load in the player; they are set to start AUTOMATICALLY when fully loaded). 5. This one is one of those tunes along the lines of #'s 21 and 23... that I enjoy when I am wrapped up in one of my delusions of grandeur (which is just about all the time, right, guys?). ... REALLY, though, this is one of those songs that speaks to me about the rather less-travelled road I usually take. With that said, enjoy being taken, by song, into Steg's World... yet again... http://www.ffyi.com/stegsmusic/V.htm (as should be expected, the songs can take quite a bit of time to load in the player; they are set to start AUTOMATICALLY when fully loaded). 6. This is the one song of these seven that is NOT new(ish). This is an oldie. Actually, it's the song that got gypped (there's a common word for yous that we very rarely see in print and for which the spelling is like WTF... ... ) in "Steggie Steggum's Top 40". For #40, it was in essence a coin-toss between the tune that stands at #40 and this one. As it stands, it was #41 and, in any event, is NOT any lower than #47 on this revised/extension of the Countdown. It is, alas, getting its due... over two years later... Enjoy! http://www.ffyi.com/stegsmusic/VI.htm (as should be expected, the songs can take quite a bit of time to load in the player; they are set to start AUTOMATICALLY when fully loaded). 7. Last, BUT DEFINITELY NOT least... While I like the tune and melody of this last song, this selection is ALL ABOUT the words and their meaning, and this particular period in the history of our great nation (I've probably given away the song). Mind you, this is NOT a genre of music I care for at all,... I mean,... AT ALL. BUT, I remember when I heard this song for the first time. It was a live performance on a news talk show. It floored me... If you don't already know what it is,... let it floor you (...again)... http://www.ffyi.com/stegsmusic/VII.htm (as should be expected, the songs can take quite a bit of time to load in the player; they are set to start AUTOMATICALLY when fully loaded). Well, I hope yous enjoyed... Over and audi, until next time... when it's on to #3 of the Countdown. ... Oh, and by the way, these bonus tunes are (also) NOT the big deal I made mention of on the "Offseason on the Gridiron" thread. That's fantasy football- AND web site-related and is COMING SOON...

I figured, since it was Saturday already and no one had chimed in... Here's my take: #1 - Good song... even if you're not necessarily into that "genre". #2 - Love the song. #3 - It's a song that is growing on me. Didn't care for it at first, but it sounds better each time. #4 - Again, not a genre (well, actually a sub-genre of a genre) that I'm crazy about... #5 - The title is one that I love (when used in it's original artistic medium), but this is a group that I've never liked. #6 - A good song, but not one that would make my top 100, if my top 100 even existed. #7 - Like you said... like the message but not the execution.

While, especially given the amount of time it has taken me to "work" through my Top 40 here ... and as is intimated by my "extra seven" above, there may be some minor switches that could be made in the countdown here, especially the farther out you go, things are solid up here in the Top 5 as I have said, and that is even more so the case now that we are in the Top 3. The three pretty much span my musical interests and are immovable objects. Without further ado, let's get to it... Steggie Steggum's Top 40 Countdown #3... This is by one of my favs, who's making a re-appearance here in the countdown. This is a tune some of you "classicists" out there might be like, "GTF outta here! This tune!!! I NEVER imagined I would hear this tune ever again." Others of you are gonna be like, "WTF is this?" But, I surely think, this is a song that if you have any range of taste, you can appreciate,... especially if you gots a little and in you. As has been mentioned by folks on this thread, what you feel like listening to depends largely on the mood you are in. #'s 3 and 2 here could readily be switched around depending on my mood. It is just that my personal disposition usually puts me in a more #2-type mood. But, if I were disposed the other way around, these two tunes would be ranked the other way around. That's how close this is! At this point in the countdown, these are all tunes that "grab" me. ... Anyway, the "voice" of this tune is un-usual. Only the "diest of hards" will have a clue who it, the singer or for that matter, because of the unfamiliar voice, the band, even is. The voice is that of one of the long, lost originals. It is the late JC, whose smooth vocals are what make this song. JC, for family reasons of all things (in the modern day and age), you left this group of artists before they became what they were to become, but they did not leave you behind. You were always an integral part of the "history of their sound", something I only came to appreciate as my exposure to their musical corpus became more filled in, and your unfortunate passing in '84 saddens those of us who came to know (of) you and your "original influence" only much later. Others have become (unbelievably, still are becoming) the voices of this group, but none speaks to me any more than you do in this song tailor-made to yours. This is a tune likely lost in the history of not just rock, but the group itself,... but not in my heart. Fellow Gridironers,... kick back, perhaps with a glass of wine or brandy or a bong, ... and let yourself melt away and come into harmony with the universe with this fiiiiine tune... http://www.ffyi.com/stegsmusic/3.htm (as should be expected, the songs can take quite a bit of time to load in the player; they are set to start AUTOMATICALLY when fully loaded).

MC, I don't disagree with you regarding JC as a vocalist. JY and, of course, DD are... were... whatever far superior. BUT, what about for this song? Overall (subjective judgments about) quality aside, this to me is a case where the "right song" met up with the "right voice" and the "right person". In fact, this is the only song where he is the lead/solo vocalist that I really like,... that I really like. It is just that it is the shizniot,... at least with respect to being the perfect blend of song, voice and person, no?

TB, that doesn't surprise me... You seem like neither the - nor -type. sk,... yea,... this is definitely a toke, relax, and melt away tune. Probably not the song you want to go with three-quarters of the way into a show. MC,... thanks for your response. That's the kind of "relating", reminiscing and domino effect I so hope for from folks. Not that it can be forced,... but when it does happen, a meaningful (meaning-filled) bridge is built on which we are meeting. To think that the mere sharing of that song could inspire that reflection means a lot to me and is a testament the profound effect one human can have on another. TB, back to you,... with all due respect, and, REALLY, I take NO offense to your post, especially given how cool you were about it,... the mere judgment of the tune, whether negative or positive, isn't the effect I'm striving for here. I mean... it's all good, and I can DEFINITELY see how this would be a tune not loved, or even liked, by all. It's just that this kind of connection like the one had here with MC is more the "spirit" of what I am getting at with this thread. Given the typical impersonal nature of our milieu here, it's just nice to connect with your fellow man on a deeper, more substantive level (if/when possible).
