Steggie Steggum's Top 40 Countdown on May 1st, 2004, 1:16am, StegRock wrote:- This list is quite "testosteronic", generally speaking. Knowing me, that was predictable. But, in hindsight, even I was surprised that there were only 2 songs on the list by female artists. There are a couple others with "cameo" female vocals, but that's it.
|
| #24... I'm DEFINITELY shiftin' gears here BIG-time yet again! Very unlike #33 (in every way), this is the TOTAL hook song! For me, this song has the best hook (chorus). I like the song as a whole. It wouldn't be this high on my list if I didn't, moreover, given the kind of music it is. But, the hook is the key here. This is the first on my countdown here of its specific genre and there are not too many others in this area of music on my list. As I have seen written, this tune lends (a sense of) credence to this kind of music; it takes it up a notch (in quality). ... Personally, it definitely takes me down to the clubs of Miami (not South Beach so much; I ain't got the duckets for that) and Lauderdale, Squeeze, Confetti, Baha, et al. with, in particular, my best (high school class of '89) bud, Ed Williams (registered here as "The Colombian Blacksnake"), as well as the places nearby here on the Jersey shore, many of which no longer exist at least under the names I knew them as, like "The Tides" in Belmar, which some of you Jersey guys may know. Makes me want to shake it, which isn't all that bad vis-a-vis my dearth of singing skills. Also, as intimated by the quote above, you guys are gonna finally get some female vocals here,... and what vocals they are... "big, huge... vocals"! This is another reason for this song's awesomeness! VERY unique and cool-sounding voice! ... Bringing this around full-circle here to the great "hook" of this song, it is kind of ironic that with this song we have our first female appearance on my list... She's "hookin'"... well! Again, for this song to be this high on my list, given its genre, it's gotta have it goin' on... So, without further ado, let's bring on #24... http://www.ffyi.com/stegsmusic/24.htm (as should be expected, the songs can take quite a bit of time to load in the player; they are set to start AUTOMATICALLY when fully loaded).

Adding to my list is a song that is one of my favorite, if not my favorite collaboration between two super artists; "Under Pressure", by Queen and David Bowie. I totally love this tune, not only for the cool baseline (which I learned quickly while I played bass) but also for the lyrics. I remember the weird video for this song as well on MTV, with no sign of either artist, just old movie clips and such. Anyways, here is my now updated list: "Be My Downfall" by Del Amitri "Blue", by the Jayhawks "Hero In Me", by Jeffrey Gaines "Heart of the Matter", by Don Henley "Breaking Us In Two", by Joe Jackson "Woman In Love", by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers "Bridge Over Troubled Waters", Simon and Garfunkel "Dreams", Van Halen "When You Close Your Eyes", Night Ranger "Jet City Woman", Queensryche "Burning Like A Flame" Dokken "Too Late For Love", Tesla "Wanted Dead or Alive", Bon Jovi "Under Pressure", Queen and David Bowie

Philster, I probably have a way around that for that one. I did get that one from Napster, BUT I "purchased" it as I did a handful of others on the countdown. So, so I can learn from this, is this the ONLY song that you have experienced this problem with so far? And, to anyone else following Steggie Steggum's Top 40 Countdown, have you too experienced this with any of the songs (including and perhaps most revealingly #26)? Responses will be MUCH APPRECIATED! That way I can adjust!

While, obviously, based on all the prefacing I did, I see whence you are coming, and I even asked for it in a sense. That said, isn't there an age-old adage about glass houses and rocks or something like that?

This next song comes off one of the best CDs start to finish in my opinion. Counting Crows burst onto the scene in 1993 with what was, at the time, a new sound. Their initial album, August and Everything After is one that keeps finding its way back into my CD player. All of the songs are listen-worthy, but Round Here is the one that really hits the mark with me. The lyrics are pretty deep and I'm not sure I know exactly what is going on, however it's a pretty colorful picture that is painted. (I've read some explanations of them, including some contradictory ones from Adam Duritz, the lead singer/songwriter for the band, and it helps make some sense of the song...) But the thing that really makes the song work for me is the emotion that Duritz shows in the vocals. There's a tone of resignation and despair that rings clear in the song. Here's a sample of the song: http://musicclips.liquiddigitalmedia.com/asf1/6/4/1/4/0000424146.asf --------------- The list thus far (in no particular order)... Peter Gabriel (with Kate Bush) - "Don't Give Up" Don Henley - "Boys of Summer" The B-52s - "Rock Lobster" John Cougar Mellencamp - "Jack & Diane" DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince - "Summertime" Counting Crows - "Round Here" Violent Femmes - "Kiss Off", "Add It Up", "Gone Daddy Gone" The Dandy Warhols - "Bohemian Like You" The explanations for the songs are in separate threads above. More songs are on the way... stay tuned.

Steggie Steggum's Top 40 Countdown #23... THIS SONG IS VERY PERSONAL even though there isn't much of a story (to tell) behind it (although, in my mind, in a way, it tells a good portion of "my" story, at least to the degree that a song can). THIS IS A PERSONAL ANTHEM of mine!!! There are three in all of these on my list here; this is the first of the three to appear. I would probably put it second (of the three) on my list of all-time "personal anthems". ... It is by a quintessential 80's "pop-rock" artist/band. This music, or should I say his/her/their music, falls somewhere in that penumbra of not just poppy junk, but not rock-n-roll either. There is "genuine" musical talent there. In any event, whatever it is, it is really good. HOWEVER, after all that 80's buildup, this song is not even an 80's tune. It was cut well after this artist's/band's prime, in the mid 90's. It was a "swan song" of sorts for him/her/them, BUT a REALLY good one. It, I am fairly sure, was a chart-buster. Sit back and enjoy... this "Steggie Anthem", fellas... http://www.ffyi.com/stegsmusic/23.htm (as should be expected, the songs can take quite a bit of time to load in the player; they are set to start AUTOMATICALLY when fully loaded).

Again, kc, I am glad you are enjoying "the show". Regarding the infamous #26, yous guys gotta at least respect my having the balls to "admit" to that one "here"...? I definitely can appreciate where you guys are coming from and I knew that would be the case. But, hey, I stuck to my guns and stuck with the truth. There's gotta be something to say for that, no? Anyway, kc, boyz, watch out! kc mentioned his wife liked the song. I'm movin' in on the ladies. Remember I won't have my wife until March and, well, as per that post I made a couple days ago in "the Bleachers"... P.S. (Brad, #23 is one of four on the CD's you have that will appear on "the Countdown" here.)

How about the "story" of #26? If you "heard" it just "told", "unsung" so to speak, wouldn't you think it was a cool story? Again, I do NOT expect the song to gain any converts. I'm just addressing the "story" of it right now (as that is the main reason why I like it... although I like the song as whole, ultimately; otherwise, it wouldn't be on the countdown).

on May 1st, 2004, 1:16am, StegRock wrote:- This list started out merely as a Top 5, that grew into a Top 10, a Top 20, which I was set at for about 8 months, and then finally into a Top 40. This can largely be blamed on song #21. The rationale behind the madness was akin to that of "don't leave anything on the field." When I remembered the song that became #21 on the list (while preparing a song list for Gino's and my December stateside wedding ceremony), it caused a logjam at #20 between songs 19, 20 and 21, any of which if I left off the list, I would have felt I was "leaving something on the field," so to speak. Top 21 sounded dumb... and, hence, the eventual explosion to 40, which seemed cool based on "Kasey Kasem's Top 40 Countdown", and at which point I do not feel "attached" relatively speaking to anything that was left off. As a matter of fact, the list could have come to a natural stop at 39. Along the lines of that reasoning, I could have hypothetically "tiered it off without feeling all too bad that I left anything special out at" #1 alone, the Top 3, Top 7, Top 10, Top 21 or Top 39. ... Well, as for #40, it's presented below...
|
| Steggie Steggum's Top 40 Countdown #22... As per the quote above, this is the last of the songs on the countdown "that I wasn't 'married to', so to speak". This countdown could have been my Top 21 and I wouldn't have felt like I "left anything on the field", again, so to speak. But, 21 isn't a cool number for top-whatever countdowns. Kasey Kasim had his Top 40, so does Steg. And, as I have mentioned before, I felt very comfortable stopping at 40,... nothing "left on the field". So, in a way, this is the top song of the second tier, to put it in fantasy football lingo. ... Anyway, moving right along, with this song, much like the very beginning of the countdown (and throughout it), we are back to some GREAT rhythm guitar. We are also back "on the edge", which is, as I have mentioned now and again during the countdown, where I like to be with my music. (Notwithstanding #'s 27 and 26 in particular,) I think the word "edge" (though not "the Edge"... at least not yet ) describes the bulk of the songs on this list and it DEFINITELY applies here. This song is without doubt one of the funkiest songs on the list. It's not a song you can easily just sit through. While it surely isn't one of the deeper songs the list boasts, it is one that makes you want to get up and "get away". It's a song that definitely "picks you up" ... http://www.ffyi.com/stegsmusic/22.htm (as should be expected, the songs can take quite a bit of time to load in the player; they are set to start AUTOMATICALLY when fully loaded).
