League Framework
The league currently consists of ten teams. Teams play one game on some weeks and two on others (go "Schedule" for details). The league expanded from eight teams to nine in 1999 and from nine to ten in 2002 (go "History" for details).
Teams are made up
of 21-man rosters + a Head Coach. Team rosters are comprised of:
Quarterbacks,
Running backs, Receivers (including Tight ends), Place kickers, and Defensive
and Special Teams units.
Positions can be drafted in any order,
and there are no restrictions regarding the number you can have at any position
(go "Rosters"
for details).
Starting lineups are composed of:
1 Head Coach, 2 Quarterbacks, 3
Running backs, 3 Receivers, 1 Place kicker, and 1 Defensive and Special Teams
unit (go "Lineups"
for details).
Weekly free-agents are acquired in a two-round, worst-to-first format every week of the season. The draft is also conducted in a worst-to-first format; however, the bottom five teams' draft position is determined by lottery. Regarding trading precedent, anything of value within the league, players, draft picks, protection spots, free-agent picks, can be traded (go "Transactions" for details). The trading deadline is Week 13.
During weeks when a team has a bonus game (i.e. two games), an extra second different lineup for the bonus game may be used.
This is a keeper league; from year to year teams are allowed to keep 12 players, unless there are extraordinary circumstances, such as expansion, in which case we may decide to protect fewer players (go "History" for details).
There are no playoffs. Instead, a "bumper week" is conducted during the last week of the season (go "Schedule" for details). The League Champion is the team with the best overall record at the end of the season.
The last week can (potentially) be extended through the NFL postseason, i.e. the playoffs, the Super Bowl, the Pro Bowl, by any given team by opting to play players in the postseason instead of the last week of the NFL regular season. This is done by submitting a lineup indicating usage of players in postseason games rather than the final week of the season. Team owners may list any one player multiple times for multiple games (the postseason and/or the final week) and the "cascading lineups" principle kicks in. The stats for any one player can only be used once, however (i.e., a single player's numbers in a Wildcard Playoff game and the Super Bowl, e.g., could not count as two players). Determining the starting lineup in these cases is done by using the topmost "game" selection that produces stats for any one given player and then skipping down to the next player listed.
Most league-related issues, such as rule and guideline changes and ownership approval, are dealt with in a democratic manner (go "News & Notes" for details).
When cuts are not submitted on time, protocol is to maintain the team's top 3 Quarterbacks, 4 Running backs, 4 Receivers and 1 Defensive and Special Teams unit in accordance with the owner's lineup for the last week of the prior season, while taking into consideration off-season trades.
Aside from the rules, guidelines and regulations stipulated herein, others are handed down in an "oral tradition" type manner. For the most part, though, they can be found here at the web site (go "News & Notes" for details).
