Well, off "the Gridiron Newsstand" the Richmond Times-Dispatch was reporting the following: "Bailey-to-Denver deal nearing completion / With financial aspects in place, Portis may be a Redskin on Monday" NOW, ESPN's "Bottom Line" is reporting that RB Clinton Portis and the Redskins have agreed to an 8-year, $50-million contract which will be officially finalized by the end of the week. Can anybody say done deal? Any more info on this, fellas?

Okay, here's the full report from ESPN.com, available on "the Gridiron Newsstand", on the Portis deal: http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/columns/story?columnist=pasquarelli_len&am p;id=1748249. It discusses how it affects how/when the trade between the Broncos and Redskins for Bailey and Portis, respectively, will be officially finalized, in detail! GREAT REPORT!

| Is it me or is there a contradiction here? Or, at least, a VERY tight squeeze, i.e. Portis will be exactly ranked #7?!?!

I guess we could have guessed that Thrash was done in Philly when T.O. officially came on the scene. I thought he might stay, actually, and surely didn't know he would end up back at his old haunt. Here's the news from "the Gridiron Newsstand" and "The REAL Feed": Eagles' Thrash to rejoin Redskins The Washington Times: Sports (30.03.2004 01:27) The Redskins have agreed to the terms of a trade that would bring Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver James Thrash back to Washington, NFL sources said last night. Redskins Reacquire Thrash Washington Post: Sports (30.03.2004 01:27) The Redskins sent Philadelphia a 2005 fifth-round draft pick to reacquired wide receiver James Thrash from the Eagles, NFL sources said. He's proven to be a stiff fantasy-wise, at least. That DEFINITELY will NOT change in Washington where he will play third fiddle at best to Coles and Gardner.

They still have Gardner and Coles, PLUS Jacobs. Whatever. This is a bad trade for the skins. I guess a 5th rounder is not worth much, but still, Thrash would have been cut IMO. |
| Actually, I have to disagree and say this is a good move by the Skins. First, he is liked in DC. (he used to play for the Skins) Second, he is a typical Joe Gibbs type player. He is always in good shape, he does not have an ego, practices and plays hard, AND plays special teams. All things Joe Gibbs likes in a player. Third, the Skins only gave up a 5th rounder in 2005 for him. Cheap for a player who is multi-faceted like Thrash. Despite the opinion he was going to be cut, he was not. Other teams were going to trade for him.(ie Bills) And finally, don't look for the Skins to keep all their current receivers. They like Darrien McCants and think Taylor Jacobs will emerge as a solid player. Obviously they love Coles and think enough of Thrash to trade for him. So who does that leave out? Rod Gardner. Rumor has it that he will be traded for a draft pick. The Skins currently only have 3 picks in the 2004 draft, 1st, 5th, and 6th. They would like to add one or two more and they think Gardner can help get them.

-- Portis Not a Great Fit; Redskins Eyeing Waiver Wire -- Fri Sep 3, 2004 --from FFMastermind.com ESPN's Len Pasquarelli reports there are whispers emanating from Washington that RB Clinton Portis isn't quite a perfect fit for the HC Joe Gibbs offense, which usually demands a power-type back. But a far bigger concern for the Redskins, who still figure to get about 1,400-1,500 yards from the third-year veteran obtained in the CB Champ Bailey trade, is the No. 2 tailback spot. None of the backups -- RB Ladell Betts, RB Sultan McCullough, RB Chad Morton or FB Rock Cartwright -- have been very impressive. Which explains why personnel chief Vinny Cerrato has been calling around checking on the status of veteran tailbacks who might be released this weekend. The 'Skins snooped around the possible availability of RB Garrison Hearst, with whom Cerrato is familiar from their stint together with the 49ers, but the Denver Broncos aren't likely to cut him now that RB Mike Anderson is sidelined for the season. Washington will take a long look at the waiver wire this weekend to see if there is a tailback better than the group it currently has behind Portis on the depth chart. http://www.ffmastermind.com/quickbits.php
