HOT off "the Gridiron Newsstand"...  Garner goes to the Bucs:

http://www.buccaneers.com/news/newsdetail.aspx?newsid=3695;

http://bucs.tbo.com/bucs/MGA52MH6MRD.html.

I think this is a GREAT signing for Steggie ... , I mean the Bucs!  Garner, even at his advanced age, is a big upgrade over Pittman or Jones.  Gruden loves him and he should see the ball A LOT.  This is also great news for B. Johnson owners (eh-hem ) as he'll be dumping the ball off to the versatile Garner A TON!  (How the winds of change blow through fantasy football with such alacrity!)  I expect 1,100 rushing yards and another 800+ receiving yards with 9 overall touchdowns out of Garner in '04 (granted I would have rather seen him go to Denver both as a Broncomaniac and for fantasy purposes ).

WIP Sports Radio in Philadelphia reported that the Bucs had released S John Lynch.  I went looking for confirmation, and only one site had anything...

http://bucs.tbo.com/

It mentions that the Bucs are denying his release, but Lynch has a press conference scheduled this afternoon to discuss his contract status.

I don't think they're releasing him... just re-structuring his contract. I could be wrong.

I also think Tampa Bay has had the best off-season in addressing all their "needs" and with minimal cap room. I also could be wrong, but I doubt it.

Ok, I think I'm just totally wrong.. I just read that on ESPN radio they reported S John Lynch being cut, and WR David Boston being traded to the Bucs!!!!!! Man, I love this. Though, are we going to turn into an unstoppable offense with a terrible defense?

    Oh....how good he would look in the Eagles secondary teamed up with Dawkins.  The Eagles corners are going to need all the help they can get.

I'll be honest with you... I'm very happy with Michael Lewis and would take him over John Lynch at this point in their respective careers.  I also think Clinton Hart did a decent job filling in for B-Dawk last season when he was hurt, so I'd rather see the Eagles spend their money somewhere else.

Agreed, the last thing the Eagles need right now is a SS, they need to address their other issues first.

Well, news is heating up that the Bucs will be brining in QB Brian Griese and WR Joey Galloway.

Here's the bead on "The REAL Feed" regarding Griese:

Griese joins the Bucs
The Sports Network: NFL (18.03.2004 12:08)

Griese reaches agreement in principle with Bucs
NFL.com (18.03.2004 00:00)
The former Denver and Miami QB agreed in principle on a three-year contract with a team that already has Brad Johnson, Jason Garrett and Chris Simms.

More Griese news from the LOCAL dailies on "the Gridiron Newsstand":

Well, Joey Galloway is in the house in Tampa!  A FANTASTIC addition.  Here is ALL the LOWDOWN from the LOCAL sources on "the Gridiron Newsstand":

http://www.buccaneers.com/news/newsdetail.aspx?newsid=3714;

http://www.buccaneers.com/news/newsdetail.aspx?newsid=3716;

http://www.orlandosentinel.com/sports/football/pro/buccaneers/orl-spt-bu cssigning032004,1,48474.story?coll=orl-bucs;

This is just more AWESOME news for Brad Johnson and owners of Johnson in fantasy leagues!  He's surely going to have the weapons and, moreover, the right mix of weaponry.  Galloway is a perfect complement to both McCardell and Jurevicius (unlike Keyshawn who is kind of of that same mold).  With the acquisition of Garner and even White and Bennett, Johnson now has the perfect backs for the dink-and-dunk passing game, which he loves; he also now has a legit go-long guy in Galloway, for which he has the arm, and he has his over-the-middle blue-collar receivers.  This is a PERFECT arsenal for an intelligent, strong-armed quarterback like Johnson.  Expect SOLID-to-GAUDY numbers from him in '04!

...

In other Bucs-related news, Warren Sapp and John Lynch are immimently departing.  Here is a piece on where it seems at this point they will likely end up:

Hello--

I just want a little reality check before you project numbers for Johnson.  Remember, he may NOT be the QB for the Bucs.  Yes, I know that he probably will be and that odds are very much in favor of it, but there is that chance.

Rumors are circulating all over the place that they are looking for another QB. RUMORS RUMORS RUMORS....

I normally would say that rumors are just that, rumors.  However, IMO, there are toooooo many rumors saying they want another QB.  I think time and the June 1st cut date will ultimately indicate who the Bucs starter will be for the 2004 season.  (I think this is true for many teams.)

DON'T BELIEVE THE HYPE!  IT'S A SEQUEL!

If you do, you fall prey, like those fools at FFToday did, to "stories" like Jeff Garcia's heading to Tampa, which ultimately came from the mouth of his daddy.

Anyway, first it was Shaun King (where's he now?); then, Shane Matthews and Jim Miller (where are they now?  ...  Really, I have no clue); then, Jeff Garcia (went somewhere else); now, Brian Griese ( , read, perfect backup); who's next?  This is the plight of Brad Johnson's career!  Constant doubt!

Here's the real deal...  Gruden just likes to bring in competition.  It is part of his coaching philosophy to keep his starters on their toes by not letting them sit back on their laurels and providing them at least a modicum competition.  Brian Griese is just that for Johnson.

Specifically regarding Brian Griese, though, this really could be a great place for him to revive his career, initially as a backup for perhaps two years or until B.J. retires or incurs that really bad injury, which is always a realistic concern for him.  Gruden in Tampa has evidently come up with a version of the west-coast offense "for the immobile quarterback"; Griese's arm isn't as strong as Johnson's, but he is similar to Johnson with regards to general style of play:  they are both VERY accurate passers with historically high completion percentages and are both not known for their (outside-the-pocket) mobility.  Griese has never mastered the dump-off nor has he learned how to move around in the pocket.  He will surely be able to learn both of those skills from Johnson, the master of the dump-off and very good at moving in the pocket, and Gruden, a great teacher of the dump-off and quarterbacking on the move.

Since the fire is already burning, I thought I'd add a full can of kerosene...

This was posted in the Rumor Mill over at Pro Football Talk.  (I was directed to this site by a contact of mine at the NFLPA regarding the Terrell Owens situation.  I was told that the information here is, for the most part, pretty accurate.)

http://www.profootballtalk.com/rumormill.htm

Quote:
JOHNSON GETTING CHOPPED?

There's a growing sentiment in league circles that, even though the Buccaneers weren't able to acquire Jeff Garcia or former Jon Gruden protege Rich Gannon, current starter Brad Johnson could be the odd man out come September (if not sooner).

The Buccaneers picked up journeyman Brian Griese, a deposed Denver starter who was unable to secure the job in Miami during a one-year experiment with his father's former team.

On the surface, Griese is no Johnson.  Still, the thinking is that Gruden will try to turn Griese into a Gannonesque reclamation project.  Gannon, who bounced around a trio of teams before landing in Oakland, became a late-career MVP in Gruden's offense.

Also on the roster are Jason Garrett and Chris Simms.  The Bucs surely won't keep four quarterbacks on the opening day roster, and although at first blush Garrett is the most vulnerable, Johnson could be the guy to get the boot.

If/when he goes, Johnson will become the best available quarterback in a lingering free-agency class filled with old men and turds.  He'd be an attractive No. 2 for teams like the Jets, the Bengals, and the Ravens, and he'd be a potential candidate to win the starting job in Oakland, San Fran, and/or Arizona.

As a result, don't be surprised to see the Bucs hold Johnson as long as possible, keeping him out of another team's camp and hurting his ability to win a starting job (and, in turn, to make Gruden look bad for letting him go).

You tell your "contact" at the NFLPA (read, receptionist who is into fantasy football ) to sit on it and rotate.  A very amateurish site located at http://www.profootballtalk.com/rumormill.h tm is NOT what I would call a reputable, no less official, NFL information source.  In any event, I know the site.  I went a couple times in the past; they were spinning some kind of web about a player over there that was interesting me.  It ended up being wrong and I summarily took it off of my go-to list.  That was about two years ago and I haven't been there since.  The site's ALL about HYPE(perbole) and it's VERY amateurish set-up belies the claim of your NFLPA source!  Don't believe me, though, visit it yourself.  NFL Insiders AND Lawn "Mowerers"... Any site that claims that they know some juice that you CANNOT substantiate anywhere else, you MUST seriously question.  Hype is their whole sell.  They think of something that sounds plausible and then spin it into a story.  They think that being different, presenting exciting-sounding HYPE, getting lucky maybe 10 to 25% of the time while the other 75 to 90% of the time gets swept under the carpet is a recipe for success.  They go about all of this very cleverly.  You will notice that a lot of the bigger hype stories, like this one about Johnson, they do not even predict will come to fruition until June when this "bold" prediction of theirs in March will be long forgotten about.  BUT, here their link is laying on another site's message board getting some attention and (as per the post above, good) press (which is fine, I'm just pointing it out for the purposes of making my case regarding their tactic).  Bottom line, you have to turn a wary eye towards FF sites that "claim" they have an inside angle (but need to mow lawns to stay afloat) and are in the business of passing along NFL news and predicting NFL matters (read, not fantasy football-oriented speculation,... that's fine) that, moreover, cannot be substantiated by other major sources (which, for argument's sake, we will include KFFL and Fanball), but has an amateurish presentation like this site (unlike KFFL, Fanball, FantasyAsylum, FFToday, JunkyardJake, The Roto Times, Fantasy Insights, Pro Fantasy Sports, FFMastermind, FantasyFootballCafe, and, hell, FantasyFootballer.com for that matter, by the way, all linked to at http://www.fantasyfootballer.com/gbrfl/).

Okay, that was my attack on the site as a whole.  Now, let's look at the report specifically.  Yea, Gruden and the Bucs are going to IN JUNE hand over the reigns to Brian Griese (Jason Garrett and Chris Simms).  Sure, whatever! They are going to make Griese into another Rich Gannon, who, as they tendentiously point out, is similar to Griese in that he too bounced around teams before landing in Oakland (with Gruden).  SOME HUGE DIFFERENCES, THOUGH!  Griese is spiraling downwards.  He started as the heir apparent to Elway and was handed the reigns of this thoroughbred upon the latter's retirement.  He started out VERY WELL, coming out of the gate fast, and, in part because of character issues, has spiraled downwards, away from the Broncos, then briefly through the Dolphins and now to the Buccaneers, since.  Gannon, on the other hand, has done nothing but press onward and upward.  The Vikings, the team who originally drafted him, initially wanted to convert him to a defensive back.  But, as a person with a strong, perseverant character and gritty, don't-quit attitude, Gannon pushed the envelope.  In his limited opportunities with the Vikings, he did well.  His next main destination was Kansas City, where people seem to forget he LIT IT UP when he was on the field.  Unfortunately, he never got a real chance in K.C. because he was there when Montana and Grbac were there.  He then, with his never-say-die attitude, finally landed in Oakland where all of his hard work, perseverance and grit paid off.  He has done nothing but slowly and steadily rise in his career...  Need I wade through all the other HUGE DIFFERENCES between Gannon and Griese.  THERE ARE MANY!  ...  Bottom line, I can't corroborate this claim ANYWHERE reputable.

Bottom, bottom line, stick to 1) the hard facts that are being discussed in major reputable sources and 2) fantasy football speculation.  Then, think for yourself!  And, don't give a site credit for getting it right one in a million times just when you happened to be looking.

By the way, Philly, did you happen to point your NFLPA "contact" in the direction of our site?  Such a plug could REALLY help us.  In any event, you can at least point out my post here to this person, giving him/her a chance to retort.

I never said it was - it even says that it just a RUMOR MILL.  I was just putting another angle out there.  I was told that they had good information.  I took my source's word and have been reading the site for a few weeks now.  They were right on with the TO situation.  Maybe that is the only thing they had right in 2 1/2 years... I can't say for certain.

C'mon Steg... you know better than to judge a book by its cover.  I think you did work for a site that has one of the most hideous (IMHO) graphical presentations out there... And I've seen some really great looking sites that have the most hideous content.

Quote:
Okay, that was my attack on the site as a whole.  Now, let's look at the report specifically.

It doesn't make a lot of sense to me either.  But there are a lot of things that happen in the NFL that make very little sense to me.  I'm not saying I agree with the claims (rumors, as it were) made by the site on this issue.  But to ignore all other opinions/angles is foolish.  I think the mere fact that the Bucs were interested in Garcia speaks volumes, so I'm willing to consider the fact that Gruden might be looking to jettison BJ.  Who knows?

Quote:

I understand that just a few short weeks ago the "major reputable sources" were indicating that Terrell Owens had NO shot at becoming an Eagle and the NFLPA case for the Special Master was a weak one at best.  I also understand that soon after the NFL season ended, Philadelphia's NBC (reputable?) affiliate reported that the Eagles had no interest in TO.  This came from Vai Sikahema (the sports reporter) who talked directly to Andy Reid.  Vai has inside ties as a former NFL player.  He is a close friend (and fellow Mormon and BYU alum) of Andy Reid.  Andy Reid himself said, following the season, that he was happy with his WR situation.

The only truth in sports is that "everybody lies".

Why would you want a receptionist/fantasy geek offering their "bad" advice here?  Besides, I'm sure my source would love to visit a site where the first thing they'll encounter is the site owner telling them "to sit on it and rotate".

This'll be rather short, believe it or not,... especially since the exchange is ALL very reasonably-stated (by both sides)...

Well, given who you were attributing the recommendation of the site to, a representative at the NFLPA, you were de facto lending it (extra) credence.  You are kind of burning both sides of the candle here on me...  OUCH!

Well, you said you have been visiting this site for just a few weeks now.  Over that span of time, I don't think it was that hard to "follow the trend" of the Owens situation.  Hell, the trend became slowly, but surely lucid right here on our "Terrell Owens tracker", which, by the way, I think was one of the better "running" resources anywhere on the internet regarding the Owens situation:

http://www.fantasyfootballer.com/cgi-bin/theGridiron/YaBB.cgi?board=55;a ction=display;num=1076472205.

And, by the way, no, I don't necessarily think local news sportscasts are the best source of big NFL news.  As a matter of fact, they tend to over-hype things as they relate to their local team.

That site does suck now! It didn't and it didn't always look that bad, either.  Four years ago, it was much cleaner looking.  He just decided to go in the wrong direction as I see it.

I don't know, kind of sounds like a really friendly offer to me.  Why, just the other night I made the same proposition to my girlfriend.

OK, guys.  I just can't resist a comment here from a true lady.  (Stay with me, I'm also a Raider.)  Sorry, Philly, but I believe that Griese truely IS a Johnson.  I mean it the way your nasty little minds are now taking it.  I believe that journeymen QBs can be very good if they work for it, as we know.  They've seen a lot of offenses.  However, Daddy Griese is no Archie Manning when it comes to training QBs, apparently.  Griese reminds me less of Gannon and more of another Raider with a Raider bloodline, a nude surfer named Todd.

As for the site in question, no idea.  No desire to find out.  End the site-oriented Johnson fight and go with the ideas about fantasy football.  What would the move mean to even the secretaries who love fantasy football, some of whom I happen to know and appreciate.

Could Brian ever unseat Brad?  I don't think so.  What do you think?

Well, looks like Michael Pittman will be on the field yet again in '04.  According to "The REAL Feed",...

Bucs RB Pittman sentenced to 30 days in jail
The Sports Network: NFL (23.04.2004 19:26)

From a couple LOCAL dailies on "the Gridiron Newsstand":

http://www.orlandosentinel.com/sports/football/pro/buccaneers/orl-sptnfl beat24042404apr24,1,5781004.story?coll=orl-bucs;

http://bucs.tbo.com/bucs/MGALE534FTD.html.

This will surely hurt Charlie Garner's production in '04, and while I say this, I have him in the GBRFL. Damn!

RB Michael Pittman back in the fold!?!?  That's what's being indicated on "The REAL Feed" and "the Gridiron Newsstand"!  But, for how long?  ...

Mutiny on the SS Gruden?

WR Keenan McCardell is skipping voluntary workouts in Tampa, due to displeasure with his contract.

The Pittman thing is good news for his owners , but a bad thing for Garner owners. Who knows what will happen down there this year.

McCardell should be thankful he is employed. He had a good year last year, but I don't think he will repeat it. They also have Galloway now and he could be the guys this year. McCardell is just trying to get evry $ before he retires at the end of this season.
