Eagles Offseason Report

Jeremiah Trotter is an Eagle for the next FIVE years!  This is a huge relief to Eagles fans as he really helps their D stand up against the run.

Also re-signed, RB Correll Buckhalter (2 years) and Hugh Douglas (1 year).

More news...

Eagles sign QB Mike McMahon to a 2-year deal.  He'll replace Jeff Blake and will compete with Koy for the #2 spot (although Koy has an in as a top-notch holder - even if he is a lousy QB).

Eagles lose DE Derrick Burgess to the Raiders.  The Eagles have a number of DEs, so this won't hurt too much.  Kearse is still the stud there, and the Eagles expect former first round pick Jerome McDougle to break out next year.  They also have ND Kalu returning from injury and Jamaal Green, who has shown some flashes.  Hugh Douglas has next to nothing left, but will provide leadership in the lockerroom (plus plenty of laughs).

Eagles re-sign LB Keith Adams.  Adams is a special teams ace and also played very well at the Will late in the season and in the playoffs when Mark Simoneau was injured.  I think Adams has a good shot to start in 2005.  He could rack up some nice tackle totals.

Eagles get FOUR compensatory picks for upcoming draft.  As a result of losing Troy Vincent, Bobby Taylor, Carlos Emmons, and Duce Staley to free agency, the Eagles gain a 5th, 6th, and two 7th round picks.  That brings their total up to 13 draft picks for this year.  The Eagles have shown a propensity to package picks to move up in the order.  They are definitely in great shape to do that again this year.

OK, the Eagles have signed a back up QB.  I again am finding myself a little frustrated with what they are doing.  Or more importantly, what they are NOT doing.  I appreciate the fact they have a ton of draft choices, but I really think they should have made some more moves by now.  A little more depth at O-line would be nice, heck, maybe even adding a #2 receiver would be good.

Have I missed something that the Eagles have done besides sign their own players?  Have they upgraded the team somewhere that I missed?

Yes, it has been a fairly quiet off-season, but the key free agent that the Eagles HAD to sign was Jeremiah Trotter, and they did.  The fact that they have a young backup QB with some starting experience is nice.  I'm not going to rip them because they seem to know what they are doing, so I'll give them the benefit of the doubt right now.

Eagles | Owens' New Agent Seeking New Deal - from www.KFFL.com
Thu, 7 Apr 2005 11:40:29 -0700

Updating a previous report, Ashley McGeachy Fox, of the Philadelphia Inquirer, reports Drew Rosenhaus, the new agent for Philadelphia Eagles WR Terrell Owens, is seeking to rework the deal of his client, who signed a seven-year, $46 million contract just a year ago. "I think the issue here is I've had a good relationship with the Eagles," Rosenhaus said. "I've got some work for the team, and I plan on getting (a new deal) done." Rosenhaus plans to meet with Eagles president Joe Banner, possibly later this month, to discuss the situation. "This is something we initiated," Rosenhaus said. "It's nothing bad. It's only good. We think it's something that is going to resolve itself, and I intend to do my best to get it resolved." Rosenhaus did not rule out that Owens could miss some or all of the Eagles' off-season workouts and possibly training camp should a new deal not get done.

For those conspiracy theorists out there.  Where are the NFL headquarters?  New York.  Both times the NY Giants play the Eagles in 2005, the Eagles will have a short week to prepare.  Just thought I'd throw it out there.  Not that anyone actually believes this stuff.

OK--

Any chance the Eagles move some of those draft picks they have to get Shaun Alexander or Edge?   I would love to see them make a move for one of those two.  Price is right!!

Westbrook is still hanging out there.  Any news on him?

And finally, what the dilly-o with Terrell? Eagles going to move him? Or are they going to play hardball with him?  I am thinking they should probably do something or have NO wide receivers next year.  Brutal!

Doubtful.  The Eagles will be happy with Westbrook and Buckhalter and whichever RB (Brandon Jacobs) they draft.

Quote:
Westbrook is still hanging out there.  Any news on him?
He still hasn't signed the one-year tender, so he could conceivably skip the upcoming mini-camp.  I think he will sign it though.  Then the Eagles can extend his contract during the season.  The Eagles have also been shopping Corey Simon around and one of the possible trades involved acquiring Travis Henry - so the Eagles are looking at other options.

Eagles will play hardball and refuse to rework his deal.  TO will whine a bit and sit out for part of training camp before finally coming in and playing.  The issue is that TO's deal (which isn't a good one for him) was heavily backloaded.  He did pretty well last year ($10 million or so), but this year he will only receive around $3 mill.  (Ironically, that is pretty much on par with Marvin Harrison and Chad Johnson for 2005.)  The deal then picks up again towards the end of the contract (when TO knows he won't be around).  The Eagles will draft a WR on the first day of the draft and maybe add another sleeper later on.

Eagles draft targets:

The Eagles will try to move up into the teens to acquire Khalif Barnes or Jammal Brown or another player they covet early.  (Possible trade partners: Houston, Cincinnati, or San Diego).  If not, and they stay put at 31 and 35, they'll hope to land Matt Jones and Luis Castillo.  They may also trade down or trade one of those picks for a 1st rounder (plus) in 2006 (better draft for studs and Eagles won't have as many compensatory picks).

The Eagles are also targetting Vincent Jackson (WR) and Brandon Jacobs (RB) on the first day (or possibly early second for Jacobs).

The Eagles also love a S (Raymond Ventrone) from Villanova in the late rounds.

This just in!!!   The good-hearted people of Philadelphia       will be conducting a food drive so TO can afford to feed his family.  As we all know, it's getting tough to keep up with a meager 8 figure salary.

On top of that, no one likes take a pay cut!   Think about having to get by with only a 7 figure salary!  I know I'd certainly take a shot at the most beloved member of my company if I were forced to do that!  (See TOs remarks about being tired in the SB)

Vikes offloaded their problem child to OakTown, lets see how long it takes for TO to piss off McNabb and be on his way out too.

I'm kind of surprised that this happened the way it did.  I don't think TO meant to disrespect McNabb with his words.... he just tends to speak first and think later (if at all).  I was surprised that McNabb came back with both guns blazing.  While he didn't mention names, he was very pointed in his comments.

I think this will be resolved outside of the public eye and that TO will grandstand a bit more going into the summer before realizing the Eagles won't cave in.  Then he'll come into camp and some new controversy will arise.

As much as I love having a weapon like TO available to the Eagles, I think they can win without him and I think the team thinks that way too.  The drafting of Reggie Brown was a not-too-subtle hint that TO needs to stop listening to his agent and start listening to Andy Reid.

http://ffpro.com/teamreports/eagles/eagles-footballinfoframes.htm -- Updated news!

Don't be surprised if Terrell Owens misses more than just a mini-camp.  The Eagles have already fined Owens for missing camp and, should they choose, could demand the return of nearly $1.8 million from Owens' signing bonus for a violation of his contract.  The Eagles will not give in to Owens or his agent, Drew Rosenhaus.  If Owens' ego gets the better of him, which is very possible, Owens could sit out training camp and part/all of the season.

Freddie Mitchell was told not to come to mini-camp.  First off, the team is trying to trade him, so they don't want to risk an injury.  Also, they don't want him poisoning the minds of the young receivers on the team.  Regardless of the ability of the team to find a trade partner, Mitchell will be gone before long.

Keep a close eye on Greg Lewis.  He's poised to take a bigger role in the offense.  McNabb repeatedly looked his way and Lewis had as many receiving yards in 3 post-season games as he had in 16 regular season games.  Lewis is fast enough to get behind defenders and is willing to go across the middle.

Todd Pinkston is a bit of an enigma.  It was likely that his role would decrease some this season because of his fear of contact that was evident in more than one game last year, however he could benefit from the absence of Owens and Mitchell.  Without those two, Pinkston likely becomes the #1 WR with Lewis as #2 and either rookie Reggie Brown or underachieving 3rd-year WR Billy McMullen as the #3.

Rookie WR Reggie Brown has all the tools to be a successful WR in the league, except experience (and sometimes self-motivation).  Brown drew the praise of the coaching staff at the mini-camp, although some of that was more a shot at WRs not at camp than anything else.

Freddie Mitchell has FINALLY been released.  It took long enough!

As an Eagles fan, I really had such high hopes for him.  There was so much potential coming out of UCLA.  Then he couldn't even beat out Thrash or Pinkston for a starting gig.  He did have his moments, but ultimately his big mouth  and big ego just got in the way.

The Eagles get a one-week paid vacation starting May 23rd!

The League was informed of an unspecified violation of the Collective Bargaining Agreement regarding off-season workouts.  An unidentified Eagles player (hmm... could it be Owens? ) informed the NFLPA of the issue and the Eagles were penalized (hardly) by preventing the players from working out at the NovaCare complex (or any other "team facility") for one week beginning on May 23rd.

Andy Reid said that the violation was unintentional and he will work to fix any problems.

Brian Westbrook coming back into the fold?

http://www.philly.com/mld/dailynews/sports/11682719.htm

Westbrook fired his agent, Tony Agnone, and signed on with Fletcher Smith (who also advises Donovan McNabb and Correll Buckhalter).  This makes it more likely that Westbrook will sign his one-year tender for $1.43 million in time to attend the June 1st mini-camp.  Westbrook's previous agent told the team that Westbrook would not sign the tender until the June 15th deadline, keeping him out of another mini-camp.

The Eagles signed defensive coordinator Jim Johnson to a 4-year deal yesterday.  This should be a relief to Eagles team defense owners.  The team has flourished on defense under his tutelage.

I hope TO holds out for most of the preseason.  I hope the Eagles stand by what they say and will not give TO more money.  The Eagles stood by TO in the super bowl last year.  Not making him sign any waivers incase of further injury.  Maybe TO should do the same with the Eagles.

Welcome to the Gridiron, Sgt. Whitt

I hope you're right.  I think TO is just doing his agent's thing, and I think he'll be playing in Philly come September.

Football is just a business to some, but I also prefer those players, coaches, etc., who show some honor.

Good call.

Of course the question to ask is who is being greedy?  Is it TO or is it the Eagles?  To play devil's advocate here, let's look at it from TO's point of view...

He was injured and was told that there was no way he could return last season.  TO worked hard and proved everyone wrong and had a very courageous and effective showing in the Super Bowl.  Now he is asking that some of the money at the end of the contract be reshifted to balance out the overall contract - one which will see him paid very poorly this year for a player of his caliber.  He is clearly one of the top 3 WRs in the game.  If anyone cares to challenge that, I'm not listening because he is that good.

Now the Eagles are standing by their announcement that they do not re-do contracts.  They did, however give Donovan McNabb and Andy Reid both extended contracts well before their previous ones expired.  The Eagles also pride themselves on not paying players once they reach a certain age.  They also pride themselves on being such a good team and still having money left under the cap.

So, which side is actually being greedy here?
