Kicking this "Offseason Report" thread off late in the going and speculatively... From "The REAL Feed":

Receiver backs out of agreement with Chiefs by Len PasquarelliDemonstrating once again that the long green typically trumps long relationships in the NFL, veteran free-agent wide receiver Az-Zahir Hakim on Friday afternoon backed out of a contract agreement with the Kansas City Chiefs, a deal th...

Well, it's official...  From "The REAL Feed":

Hakim agrees to deal with Saints
ESPN: NFL (19.06.2005 08:52)
Hakim to sign 1-year deal with Saints after jilting Chiefs by Len PasquarelliIn what ranks as the NFL's worst-kept secret of the last few days, free agent wide receiver Az-Zahir Hakim, who on Friday backed out of a contract with the Kansas City Chiefs, has reached an agreement with the New Orlea...

This sounds like good news for Deuce owners.  The Saints' OL is improving, especially in terms of the run lanes, but it stilll has trouble with pass blocking.  A deeper WR corps will help keep the opposing D's off McAlllister's back.

gotta get in on this one - i'm a homer for the saints...in fact, i paid (cap$$ no' real $$) $60 for deuce the last 2 years - (i've also name my new (huge) puppy deuce) - and have budgeted for that this year in our auction draft...if his ankle holds up he should rock, and with aaron's instructions being simplified ("give the ball to deuce") i think he'll go nuts this season...even with a bad ankle, he regularly gets a buck or so on teams like tampa and carolina - i'm looking forward to a good year for the saints - even stallworth...aaaagggh - yeah, i said it - again - for the fourth time...and i'll probably have to drop him again...ha...

I think Deuce will be back this year.  Not only is he healthy, but the Sainits have reintroduced the Fullback to block for him.  And, as you said, the Saints have simplified their offense.  It will be a lot more Deuce and a lot less of Brooks getting sacked!!

If anyone wants to look back to this time last year, I was very critical of Deuce and was questioning him as a top 5 fantasy draft pick.  (Of course, I was right!   )

This year, however, I'm singing a different tune.  I think the NO offense will be better and will feature Deuce more.  I also think the O-line is improved.  Finally, Deuce is in a contract year.  Instead of getting stopped at the 1-yard line, he'll think of the 2006 contract and push it into the endzone.

You just ruined it for me.  I wanted to tell you I took him as my RB1 in a live draft on Friday, and then I wanted to tell you to stop laughing.

I know you were one of the people I was critical of last year because of your support of Deuce and your early selection of him in a draft in which we both partook.  But this year you have my undying support.

These are my thoughts on Deuce. I feel this will be the year that Deuce breaks out and becomes a top 5 back. There have been too many additions for Deuce not succeed. Adding Mayberry and Jamaal Brown will definately do good things for the line. New O coordinator Mike Sheppard, who is more dedicated to the run. Being without a FB really hurt Deuce last year and was brought back for the end of last season. Haslett has said he has to run the ball to win games, look at the end of last year when he got the touches.

Week 14-@dallas-30-83-2TDs
Week 15-@tb-25-89
Week 16- ATL- 29-128
Week 17-@car- 28-140-1 TD

All of these games have a few things in common. Deuce was healthy again, had his FB to run behind, was given the rock an average of 28 times a game, and the Saints won each of these games. Average those games out and that comes out to a 1760 yards on the ground, not to mention Deuce has some pretty good hands out of th backfield.

Duece in the end of the first round to me is a steal.  Ill take him all day long @ the 6-8 spot. Everything to me points to a top 5 season. Guys like Mcgahee who are way overrated are going in front of Deuce and to me thats rediculous.

...ditto msb & steg...
also - i think brooks - although not a year to year keeper - is a good risk as well ( ) because - despite his inconsistency and throwing the ball to linemen  - had 4 rushing td's last year (more than culpepper - & i'd pay more for culpepper)- he'll be severely undervalued at most drafts and could be a winner...for what it's worth coming from a homer...if not  - coming soon to a saint's franchise near you - a new qb...think they could talk jake into coming home???...

Good new for Saints fans and the McAllister family...  From "The REAL Feed":

Saints and running back Deuce McAllister agree on contract extension
FaceOff: Football (28.07.2005 19:54)
NEW ORLEANS (AP) - Deuce McAllister agreed to a seven-year contract extension with the New Orleans Saints on Thursday, avoiding a feared holdout for the centrepiece of the NFL team's offence.

This is great news for McAllister owners.  No need to worry about a hold out this year, and it shows the team is clearly committed to him.  And all indications are the Saints will be committed to the run as well!
