The question that WILL NOT DIE.
Which was the better team?
The 1985 Bears
OR
The 1970's (pick a year) Steelers.

I watched my first NFL game in 1959.
As I recall - it was the Colts and Giants on a B&W Motorola TV with "rabbit ears".
But ... I digress.

The greatest team I have ever seen is:
The 1985 Chicago Bears.

There is no question about this.
The entire NFL had no answer for this team.
The ONLY loss in the regular season was to the Dolphins, at Miami, on MNF with the 'Phins "only perfect season" record on the line.
In the PlayOffs, the '85 Bears WERE NOT SCORED ON by the best the NFL had to offer.
Nada. Zip. Zero points.
I've seen the Lombardi Packers.
The Unitas Colts.
I've seen Joe Namath.
The Steelers.
Cowboys.
9ers.
All pretenders.

The 1985 Bears were up by 10 points when they stepped on to the field.

Thank you!

This is the 3rd football message board I have been a part of, and, as usual, as soon as I try and get into the swing of things, make a post, make a comment, make some friends, some cyber nazi moderator moves, deletes or modifies my post because I fail to follow some "rule". This is complete and total crap and I'm sick of it and exactly why I haven't posted on a football message board in over a year. Thanks for the invite, Walker, but I refuse to get into this moderator egomaniac thing again.

Just read the Redzone, Between the 20's and Sidelines guidelines for the descriptions. WHen in doubt where to put something, just post it where you think it should go. If it is in the wrong place a moderator will move it and explain why...but don't worry about it! This is a great site, so stick around!!

Perplexing statement given the fact that we have "anonymous moderation" here on "the Gridiron".

SW, did you even take the time to go through the related threads before going into your diatribe?  It is ALL quite clearly and in reasonable terms stated on them.  Please, I implore you to check them out before doing something rash.  I mean this is an absolutely FREE forum.  I am not worried about quantity; I am concerned with quality.  It is reasonable on my part to encourage organization in presentation.  That's all!

Just to help bring this back on topic...

I, too, think the '85 Bears were the best team I have ever seen play, though I was pretty young at the time and my memory of them is a little hazy.  One team you did not mention in your list of pretenders, SW, are the undefeated Miami Dolphins and their "Killer Bees"!  I cannot properly comment on them as they were before my time and I did not see them play their undefeated season.  That having been said, the Chicago Bears of '85 had, I would say, the best defense of all-time and were the best team of this day and age (loosely-termed).  I suppose one could consider the undefeated Dolphins as being of an earlier era.

I find it odd that no one (at least no one that I've seen or heard - yet) has compared this year's Eagles to the '85 Bears.
The closest I, personally, have seen to Buddy Ryan's scheme since '85.
Both the Bears and the 2002 Eagles will blitz anybody. Anytime. Any down.
Defensive ends, linebackers, safties - even cornerbacks.
It's an "all or nothing" approach that requires 3-4 outstanding linebackers and a committment to terrorize the QB.
The Eagles seem to be taking this same approach - and it's got them in the NFC Championship game.
It's always been a mystery to me why more teams didn't take Buddy Ryan's Bears approach in all these years - assembling a great core of linebackers.
West coast. West Coast. West Coast offense has dominated all the talk for the past 15+ years.
It was Ryan's defense that was the true story.
IMO.

I can't give an intelligent answer here because both of these teams were before my time. I remember watching the Bears in '85, but was too young to appreciate how good they were. It's tough to compare teams from different eras. The game has changed so much over the years and it's impossible to really know who's "the best" unless they actually play each other. This is one of those sports arguments that will never be resolved. Similar to, "Who's the best QB of all time?" Ask 5 people, you'll get 5 different answers... The thing is, none of them are right or wrong.

PS: The rumour is true. Before starring in commercials with "ALF", Terry Bradshaw actually played football. Believe it or not.

I was born the same year as the AFL. 1960
I moved to Kansas City the same year as the Dallas Texans. Late  '62.
Like the Chiefs, it could be argued I've had more bad years than good, but occaisonally have been great

Was born January 22nd, 1970 - seems that date is coming up again pretty soon...

Anyway, I started watching football seriously in 1973 or 1974 and I think the Steelers of the 1970s were much better than the 85 Bears.  Notice we say the Steelers of the seventies and not the Bears of the eighties??  The Bears disappeared as soon as they arrived.  The Steelers stuck around and won a bunch of Super Bowls.  It just happens that they played better teams in those games than the Bears did in 85.
