GBRFL Schedule

Well, fellas, I just spent the better part of the last seven hours pouring over and trying to revamp the GBRFL schedule. After moving the Week 5 "1 vs. 10" game to Week 1 per the discussion, I tried to take on the task of better calibrating our game schedule with the NFL's and in particular the bye weeks. It was a TOTAL nightmare! Every time I thought I had it nailed with respect to balancing the schedule in accordance with the NFL's bye weeks, avoiding back-to-back games against the same team, indeed, maximizing distance between games between any two teams, making sure everybody was within one game played every week, etc., I found a (fatal) flaw. Ultimately, I ended up back to where I began and just moved the Week 5 "1 vs. 10" game to Week 1, period, and that is what you will find over on the "Schedule" page on the league site. NOW, with that said, having poured over this shit all night, I think I may know the lines along which Warner may have been thinking... Mind you, unlike the schedule I devised way back with an eye toward covering various bye-week schedules and reusage in mind, this strategy may need to be (painstakingly) adjusted from season to season depending on how the NFL's schedule changes. HOWEVER, on its face it seems fairly straightforward. Here we go... Remember that we need to cover 27 games per team, not including the final bumper week. So, first, we continue our extended Week 17 bumper week as is. That leaves 16 weeks. Of those 16 weeks, there are 8 weeks where no NFL team has a bye (Weeks 1, 2, 3, 4, 13, 14, 15 and 16), and there are 3 where only two teams are on bye (Weeks 5, 6 and 12). If WE ALL play two games each of those 11 weeks, that would be 22 games for each of us. 5 weeks remain. Of those 5 weeks, there are 3 weeks where four NFL teams have a bye (Weeks 7, 8 and 10) and 2 during which a whopping six NFL teams are on bye (Weeks 9 and 11). If WE ALL played just one game each during each of those five weeks, that would be 5 games for each of us. 22 + 5 = 27!!! Now, there are other (nuanced) factors that need to be taken into consideration, like what was aforementioned, and I think the bye-week schedule changes from season to season, so this may require yearly maintenance. BUT, this is doable, THOUGH not (likely) by me this year. If someone wants to step up to the plate and give this a whack (I have already done some of the work here),... eh-hem,... Steve,... I would consider implementing it -- and I think we should consider implementing it -- THIS YEAR if it, indeed, passes inspection and is an upgrade on what we have!!! Thoughts...??? Anyone want to make the effort??? (Steve...???)

The one thing to point out then is that weeks 7-11 would all be single games. Also, thanks for updating the website already!!! Love seeing my team. Amazing how before the season starts I have so much hope.......... |
| Ok, after manually trying to create a schedule, I realized how impossible the task was. Fucking nightmare. I eventually figured out another solution, which was not nearly as difficult (not easy mind you) and have since created a schedule and have sent it to Steg for review. Like Steg stated yesterday, there are a lot of nuances to it. One caveat is that if it is good to go, the current week 1 schedule will probably have to change.

Well, first and foremost, good work, Steve! Looks good! I definitely am open-minded on the matter. The main merit of Steve's new schedule is equity across the bye weeks. It comes with the price of a sluggish midseason schedule, of which both Steve and I made mention. That could have an upside, though, in fact. More to the core of the matter is that that equity is really just in theory. Indeed, only to the degree that participants knowingly factored in bye weeks when acquiring players would such schedule equity achieve any proportional degree of actual equity. In fact, the schedule as it is may achieve a higher degree of equity in reality, that is to say, in relation to the actual makeup of the rosters of the teams in the league. This is the age-old debate between idealism and realism, indeed. Can human intellectual constructs ever really achieve what they endeavor to? The idealist hopes so. The realist thinks not really. But, I digress... It is clear that this matter merits thorough and careful consideration, and I think not just by me but by us, and not only do I not have the time to devote the required attention to this at this point, others may not, and we as a group surely do not. I do want to deal with this democratically. But, the season, indeed, is upon us. Moreover, (I did not tell yous about this, but) Gino and I are anticipatively going to work on improving the automation of the GBRFL scoring spreadsheet this season. Upon further consideration, a massive change to the schedule on top of those efforts is just going to be too much. So, I am going to table this for 2018 and postpone it for 2019. That said, progress has been made. Steve's efforts have given us a great foundation to work from for next year. I say that sometime later in the season or during the offseason we will forward out the schedule Steve crafted, and then we get to it! As for this year, the schedule will be what has been posted, which is the same schedule we have been using for years, save for the movement of that one "1 vs. 10" game from Week 5 to Week 1. Sound good, folks? On a different, but related note... The following did warm my heart... on Sep 3rd, 2018, 3:42pm, DirkDiggler wrote:| Ok, after manually trying to create a schedule, I realized how impossible the task was. Fucking nightmare.
