Houston Texans - Week Eight Analysis

Well, the Texans have faced two poor defenses in the past two weeks, and fared rather well. The Texans go into the swamp this week and play another banged up defense in the Jacksonville Jaguars, so I expect their recent offensive success to continue. The Texans defense has slipped the past couple of weeks, which means that the offense has had to pick up the slack and show some productivity. Quarterbacks David Carr continues to impress, even though he is getting pounded week in, week out (nine more sacks last week). Granted, four of those sacks were incurred when running out of bounds before he got to the line of scrimmage. Carr's mobility and decision making improves each week, cutting down his interceptions and giving the wideouts a little more time to get open downfield. Looks like this kid was truly worth a #1 pick...I am very excited about his prospects for the future. Either way, Carr should see some pretty good success this week against an injury and salary cap hobbled Jaguar team. David Carr - 250 yards passing, 2 TDs, 1 INT; 30 yards rushing, 0 TDs Runningbacks Well, from a fantasy standpoint, the Texans RB situation is frustrating as hell. If you combine both of the Texans RB's, they are having a pretty darn good season. The problems from a fantasy standpoint are - 1) Which one will get off each week and 2) Where are the TDs? Overall, my predictions have nailed their combined productivity on the head, but predicting which one will get the majority of those statistics is a crapshoot each week. I recommend that you do not start EITHER of them unless you are desperate due to that uncertainty. Since Allen has had the better game the past couple of weeks, I'll predict that Wells is the gamebreaker this week. Hell...Wells' YPC is much better than Allen's, but Allen seems to have the better ability to break long runs/passes due to his speed. It's a shame...you have to like the Texans' ability to run the ball against a DL that was mostly robbed by the Texans during the expansion draft. James Allen 30 yards rushing, 0 TDs; 20 yards receiving, 0 TDs Jonathan Wells 70 yards rushing, 0 TDs; 10 yards receiving, 0 TDs Wide Receivers Carr's scrambling ability and improved ability to checkoff his receivers has opened the door for Bradford and Gaffney to see better opportunities downfield. Even Miller has seen some open looks over the middle as Carr checks off to his third option. You have to love Bradford and Gaffney's ability to exploit the relatively weak Jacksonville secondary this week. Bradford is still a very good 3rd wideout to start this week, and maybe a good 2nd if you are in a larger league. Corey Bradford - 5 receptions, 90 yards, 1 TD Jabar Gaffney - 4 receptions, 60 yards, 0 TD JaJuan Dawson - 2 receptions, 20 yards, 0 TD Brian Miller - 3 receptions, 50 yards, 1 TD Overall, I expect a productive day for the Texans offense, but in the end the Jacksonville offense and homecrowd advantage will result in ANOTHER expansion team loss... Jaguars 34, Texans 20
