Buccaneers Off-Season Report

To no surprise the Buc's cut C Jeff Christy in order to get under the Salary Cap when Christy denied a restructrue in his contract. This move puts a huge need for a C to replace the Pro Bowler Christy. Names that have come up are Jeff Saturday of the Colts, Tim Ruddy of the Dolphins, and Andy McCollum of the Rams. Ruddy is also most likely to be cut by the Dolphins. Now that we all know that Emmit Smith has been cut, reports out of Tampa are that they are interested in him. More word of this when it gets out. Speaking of RunningBacks being cut recently cut RB Stephen Davis has expressed interest in meeting with the Bucs, who are believed to have a strong desire to sign him. Barnes, Derrick Brooks agent on Wednesday was able to restructure his 2003 contract. In a move designed to get their payroll below the NFL's projected salary cap limit of $75.007 million, the Bucs turned Brooks' $4.75 million salary for 2003 into a signing bonus. The Bucs also have discussed the possibility of restructuring the contracts of several other players, including quarterback Brad Johnson, wide receiver Keyshawn Johnson, safety John Lynch and defensive end Simeon Rice. In addition to LB Shelton Quarles and RT Roman Oben, starting linebacker Al Singleton, starting free safety Dexter Jackson, punter Tom Tupa, backup tight end Rickey Dudley, backup left tackle Lomas Brown, and backup quarterbacks Rob Johnson and Shaun King are unrestricted free agents.

Nothing really going on with Tampa Bay. As predicted C Jeff Christy was released. This is a bit of a news regarding the Linebacker situation in Tampa Bay from Buccaneers.com The Tampa Bay Buccaneers finished their 2002 championship season with six linebackers on the active roster. One of those defenders, rookie Justin Smith, did not play a down during the regular season and another, Jack Golden, appeared exclusively on special teams. Of the three starters, two – Shelton Quarles and Alshermond Singleton – became unrestricted free agents last Friday. Thus, even though that unit features the NFL Defensive Player of the Year (Derrick Brooks) and has been an undeniable strength in Tampa for the better part of a decade, it is a position that must be addressed this offseason, one way or another. Will the Bucs re-sign their own players? Look for outside help? Shore up the position in the draft? All of the above? We may not have the answers to those questions for weeks or months. On the other hand, there is one 'addition' to the Bucs' linebacking corps that is a certainty to happen, due some time in early May. That player is former UCLA standout Ryan Nece.

Well, I don't know if Rice was a free-agent (hint: maybe wanna' change the thread title, KJ 76, to something broader like the title of this post), but the Bucs just got him back into the fold for big bucks and the long-haul. No local corroboration yet, but here is the ESPN report: http://espn.go.com/nfl/columns/pasquarelli_len/1519986.html.

Well, it looks like QB Jim Miller is on his way to the Bucs. Here is how it reads over at "the Gridiron Newsstand": http://www.sptimes.com/2003/03/29/Bucs/Tampa_Bay_to_sign_QB_.shtml; http://bucs.tbo.com/bucs/MGA36I31VDD.html. Is Jon Gruden trying to prove that he can mentor a different breed of quarterback... the immobile kind? I mean Miller and Brad Johnson are definitely cut from a similar mold. By the way, KJ 76, I hope you don't mind my giving this thread a little more character by way of the message icon of the initial post!

| Win-loss record aside... I personally don't think he fits... in the NFL, that is! His arm is just TOO weak, and remember he kind of surprised everybody that one and only season. After that, defenses would have easily figured out how to defend against his puny arm. A second year would have been a travesty. I say he stops (pushing the envelope on being a starting QB) while he's still ahead, i.e. while people still think he is kind of good. That's my take!

Well, besides Rudd, it looks like the Bucs are interested in signing another Miller, Rudd's old teammate, LB Jamir Miller. Here is the report HOT off "the Gridiron Newsstand": http://bucs.tbo.com/bucs/MGAULOTA2ED.html. Any thoughts? Also, first seen on "The REAL Feed" and then corroborated by way of the further links provided on "the Gridiron Newsstand", QB Shaun King is staying put to compete to be B. J.'s immediate backup: http://www.buccaneers.com/newsroom/newspage.asp?newsid=2962&backpage =. With the aforealluded Jim Miller in the fold as well as Shane Matthews, what do you think the chances really are that Shaun King survives, remains with the team in any capacity or even successfully wins the backup job?
