SUPER BOWL

XXXVIII

New England Patriots are in the Super Bowl for the 3rd time in seven years.  They won their 1st in franchise history 2 years ago against the St Louis Rams.  Back in the early 90s St Louis was the city rumored to be the new home of the Patriots before Bob Kraft came & kept the team here.  Since that time the once laughing stock of the NFL has become the model franchise.

The Carolina Panthers are making their very first appearance in the Super Bowl.  For the most part they have had very little success in their limited history.  However make no mistaske this team is for real.  All this talk of cinderella is a joke.  They were the first team to clinch a division.  They have play makers on both sides of the ball.  John Fox has done a masterful job getting his players to believe in his system.  Stephen Davis was an excellent off season addition.  Steve Smith is their biggest threat offensively.  Defensively they have the BEST front 7 in football.  For the Patriots to move the ball on offense they will likely use 5 WR sets & take advantage of the young CBs.  Defensively we must concentrate on Davis & Foster.  Make Delhomme beat us with his arm.  Good luck Jake.

Patriots Statistical Breakdown:

Tom Brady ~ 300 yards passing, 2 TDs & 1 INT
Kevin Faulk ~ 10 yards rushing, 50 receiving & 1 TD
Antowain Smith ~ 40 yards rushing
Troy Brown ~ 50 yards receiving & 1 TD
Bethel Johnson ~ 25 yards receiving
Deion Branch ~ 50 yards receiving
David Givens ~ 50 yards receiving
Christian Fauria ~ 25 yards receiving
Daniel Graham ~ 50 yards receiving
Adam Vinatieri ~ 1 FG & 2 PATs

Panthers Statistical Breakdown:

Jake Delhomme~ 150 yards pass 1 TD & 2 INTs
Stephen Davis ~ 50 yards rush, 15 yards rec
DeShaun Foster ~ 30 yards rush, 25 yards rec
Steve Smith ~ 50 yards receiving & 1 TD
Muhsin Muhammad ~ 35 yards receiving
Ricky Proehl ~ 15 yards receiving
Jermaine Wiggins ~ 10 yards receiving
John Kasay ~ 0 FGs & 1 PAT

1st 2nd 3rd 4th FINAL
________________________________________________________________________
| 3 | 0 | 7 | 7 | 17Patriots

 | 0 | 0 | 7 | 0 | 7Panthers

I predict a slow start for both offenses.  At half time the Pats will be up by just a FG.  In the 2nd half things get going.  Brady hits Troy Brown for a 30 yard score.  The Panthers match that with a long ball to Steve Smith.  In the 4th quarter Faulk takes a screen pass from Tom & goes to the house.  Pats win 17 to 7

Nice analysis bakes.  I think I agree with almost everything you've said.  I'm not sure Brady will get to 300 in the yardage column, but he'll be able to find some soft spots in the D.

Nice work Bakes.  I too think your analysis is good.

I think the Pats D is going to confuse the hell out of Delholme.  I think they will score at LEAST one TD.

Go Pats!!!

Superbowl Thoughts:

DEFENSE (What the winner will do best in this Superbowl)

Both teams are even in tackles, Panthers do it more solo, Pats do it more with assists.
Both teams are about even in sacks.
Both teams force fumbles.
Pats are better at breaking up the pass.
Panthers D has more Stuffs, but the Pats D limits gains better.

OFFENSE

Both drop pretty much the same number of passes.  Pats pass more.  Panthers do more big running plays.
Pats are much better at long pass receptions.  Panthers with the run.

SPECIAL TEAMS

Panthers punter Sauerbrun is the better punter.  Pats Walter allows fewer returns.
Both teams make big returns.
Both teams have good field goal kickers.

ALSO

The Patriots do best in the 1st, 2nd and 4th quarters.
The Panthers do best in the 3rd quarter.
Both do good with come-from-behind.
Pats pass better in the first half.  Panthers pass better in the second half.
Pats are 23-0 when they lead going into the 4th Quarter.

SOUNDS LIKE A GOOD GAME!

KEYS TO VICTORY

For New England:

1) Spread the Carolina defense with 4 & 5 WR sets

2) Keep Davis/Foster under 100 yards

3) Win the special teams/field position battle

For Carolina:

1) Be creative on offense & take chances often

2) Pressure Brady & play the WRs tight

3) Win the special teams/field position battle

Bakes your name fits you well. Tou are completely BAKED if your think the score will be correct.
I agree with most of your stats though except for more TDs for CAR and Kasay will have at least 2 FGs IMO.

Final Score:

Pats 23 CAR 20

OR

Car 23 PATS 20. I can't choose.

I WANT CAR to win, and will take CAR and the points in a bet. I think PATS will win though.
Since this is just for FUN i will take CAR to win it all.

Congrats on the Super Bowl win bakes.  I was happy to see a great game and a Pats win.

Now that the diversion of football is over, New Englanders can return their focus to something important, like the Red Sox.

The Carolina Panthers may have been known as the "Cardiac Cats" but the New England Patriots showed why they are simply the BEST.  I have to admit I was shocked at how well the Panthers played.  I anticipated a slow start which it was.  I anticipated both teams playing conservative but they were anything but.  Both teams came out throwing.  The Patriots were far more successful in the first half but Vinatieri had 2 pathetic attempts at FGs.  Which signaled right away that this was gonna be a nail bitter.  The poise in which Delhomme showed definitely resembled that of Brady of 01 but to me more closely resembled shades of Brett Favre.  He was decisive & clearly had confidence in his WRs ability to get open.  The 2nd half the Pats looked in control again but Brady threw a ball off his back foot.  Nothing good can come out of that & it didnt.  The Panthers took the ensuing drive in for a TD & put the Patriots behind for the 1st time in months.  Brady however was not rattled & got the Pats right back in with a TD to Vrabel of all people.  This game was so exciting you almost had to expect overtime & Carolina tried everything in their power to send us to the 1st ever in Super Bowl history by tying the game with yet another TD.  But with 1:08 left the Brady Bunch marched into FG range & Adam did the rest.

I don't know which was more disgraceful the Patriots secondary or Justin exposing Janet's right breast on national tv at half time OR the naked ref that pranced onto the field prior to the 2nd half kick off.  lol Anyway the Patriots ARE SUPER BOWL CHAMPS & that's all that matters.  I won't use the "D" word but I will say that THIS SEASON was one of the MOST remarkable in HISTORY!

I originally thought the whole halftime show looked pre-scripted.  Of course I thought Janet had a pastie on when I saw it on TV.  When I saw the pics online today, I realized maybe it wasn't scripted.  There was no pastie - just a big nipple ring.  www.drudgereport.com

Also, watching the game on TV, I saw the streaker on the field.  At first I thought it was the kicker - I saw him toss what looked to be a towel off to the side (although it seemed awfully large - and that was what first caught my attention).  Then I thought he was warming his leg up (but it looked more like a Riverdance thing)... then I finally realized what was going on right before they cut away.

She did have on a pastie. I large, sun shaped metallic one. (I saw the closeup shot of it) It had to be a premeditated thing.

Actually it wasn't a pastie.  It was a sunburst shaped nipple ring.  What you are seeing under the ring is pure flesh...

Every article I read, every radio station I listened to this morning and everyone I talked to said it was a pastie. It sure doesn't look like a nipple ring to me.

Just making a quick drive-by or, should I say, pit-stop!  Anyway, CONGRATS, bakes, on getting a little more Super-Bowl bling-bling! The Patriots are the well-deserved '04 champions. AND, moreover, MUCH thanks for your Patriots reports throughout the season right up until the VERY end!  Actually, that thanks goes out to all of you who have contributed weekly team reports to "the Gridiron"... even though you did not have to do them for as long as bakes here.

Alright, I (of course ) have got to chime in regarding this Janet Jackson titty flasher thing.  When are these people going to realize how immature and irresponsible their behavior is and how it affects us and makes us look as a (civilized... refined?) society?  Look, we are an anally-retentive society when it comes to sex, for sure, and we are starting to crack at the seams, it appears.  That having been said, the forums these people are choosing to "explore" their sexuality, i.e. manifest their sexual immaturity, are very poor.  Shouldn't we at least try to shelter the most fragile of us, our children?  Can't these goings-on be restricted to arenas where children, and families for that matter, are not supposed to be?  The Super Bowl is a FAMILY event; keep your -clad tit in your shirt, for Christ's sake, and stop "exploring" your sexuality (as all the articles on this read) in public... on MTV and make a couple porn flicks to get it out of your system if need be!

Step down.

I was out from work the past 2 days. So I attended the Super Bowl Parade in Boston yesterday.  I got there just before 11am & there was already a mob I'd guess half a million.  Mostly teenagers & I tried to get as close as possible w/o knocking people over.  I got about 50 feet from the staging area.  One of the first things I noticed was young women flashing the crowd (possibly simulating Janet's half time exposure) AND several young women joining in a loving embrace with a kiss from another woman (possibly simulating Britney & Madonna's kiss on MTV).  Now I admit that I thoroughly enjoyed these expressions of sexuality.  At the same time I found myself thinking if those incidents hadn't occured on national tv would those kids be doing that?  Perhaps there would have been a few boob shots, but I have never seen so many random women willing to kiss each other in such a public forum.  That is why I love America.

I'm still waiting for a parade in Philadelphia.    Again, congrats Bakes.

Anyway, back to the Janet issue...  I was talking to a co-worker of mine who is from Jamaica.  He was saying how he didn't understand all the fuss being made about the Janet issue.  In Jamaica, there are topless women in the newspapers and it's not a big deal.  But in America we are willing to put all sorts of violence on TV and not think twice about it.  The amount of violence we have become desensitized to would never play elsewhere...

Regarding the sex issue, I think it's more about the mindset behind it (in the U.S.).  The Jamaicans are topless for totally different reasons than Janet Jackson, Brit and Madonna's kissing, etc., etc.  Janet Jackson, Brittney, Madonna are admittedly "exploring their sexuality" (as if); the Jamaicans are just letting it "all hang out", mon! Along those lines, analyzing these things across cultures doesn't usually work well.  You can't apply one culture's standards/mores to another.  In any event, I'm sure you get that, Philly.  Again, what I am more "concerned" about (and you possibly are too) is the (unhealthy) psyche behind why our American chicks are doing this shit.

The violence issue is a great point.  We had some bonfires being shown on live television in the fenway area.  Then people on talk shows ask why do people do this?  HELLO maybe it's b/c you put them on TV.

Come on, guys.  It's just that sex sells.  We're mammals.  We're bred to respond to that stuff.  (Including the violence getting our attention.)  That's why we're still here.

I say Janet's and Justin's new albums will probably do just great.  You don't think that that's the only reason for the stunt?  Think some more.

The psychology and outrage just overanalyze a pattern that has been going back and forth like a pendulum for as long as we've been wearing a veneer of civilization.  Before that, no back and forth, ALL about sex and violence and food.  (Sounds like a pretty good Superbowl party!)

The only question is how far we are going to allow the pendulum to swing and how we're going to stop it from swinging more.  No morality written in the sky, just our choices and enforcements.
