Broncos Off-Season Report

Portis wants to be shown the money. A hold out against the Donkeys may be looming. Here is a link to Denver Post: http://www.denverpost.com/Stories/0,1413,36~86~1935994,00.html and From PFW: Portis, who has rushed for 1,500 yards in each of his first two seasons, has two years remaining on the four-year contract he signed as a second-round pick in 2002. The contract included a $1.29-million signing bonus and pays him less than $400,000 in 2004. Portis would be the lowest-paid back among the 14 who topped 1,200 rushing yards in the regular season. His yards-per-carry average was higher, 5.5, than any of those backs. Portis’ situation is similar to the position Emmitt Smith found himself in with the Cowboys in prior to the 1993 season. The problem is, the Broncos have other unrestricted free agents to take care of, namely MLB Al Wilson and OLB Ian Gold. Wilson could command a deal at or exceeding the value of the contract Bears Pro Bowl MLB Brian Urlacher signed last summer worth $56.65 million with a $13 million signing bonus. Denver is currently $5 million over the projected salary cap for 2004 but could get under that number by releasing DT Daryl Gardener and massaging the generous deal extended QB Jake Plummer last offseason.

Now with Portis's departing, in hindsight, how prophetic/foreshadowing was DD's post, huh? Anyway, as an absolute die-hard to the core, it's a sad day to see Ed McCaffery retiring. He was never really right after that nasty broken leg he sustained back on that fateful Monday night against the Giants in Week 2 of the 2001 season. Of course, none of us were the same (soon) after we woke up the next morning... ... ...

Garner to replace Portis

Charlie Garner has his glimmers on the Broncos' (essentially) vacant tailback position as per this report off "the Gridiron Newsstand": http://www.denverpost.com/Stories/0,1413,36~86~1995304,00.html. I think Garner would be an AWESOME one- or two-year stopgap for my Donkos. However, he is also on the Lions and Buccaneers' radar. Anyway, given the fairly plethorous group of RB's entering the draft this year, the possibility of Clarett's falling to the second round, and the veteran free-agent pool/pool of (disgruntled) veterans who will likely change teams in '04, which includes good quality like Garner, Staley, Hearst, Dillon, Wheatley, A. Smith, it just goes to show how BRILLIANT of a move the Portis-for-Bailey deal is. I could DEFINITELY see Denver grabbin' a guy like Garner or Staley, ridin' him for a year or two, and drafting Clarett, either in the second round or by trading up if need be, and having him step up in a year or two. SOUNDS LIKE A PLAN, HUH? ...

Well, my Donkos didn't manage to snag Garner, but, boy, are they busy in the free-agent market this offseason. I knew about their getting CB Reggie Stephens. I did NOT, however, know about their grabbing up WR Willie Jackson. I think that is a VERY intriguing signing. He could produce for sure if the opportunity presents itself. Now they are sniffing around S John Lynch and QB Kordell Stewart. Even an aging Lynch would help their continually improving secondary, and, believe it or not, even though I have never really liked Kordell, if he could finally face reality and put his dreams of being a starting quarterback in the NFL aside, I think he would fit in Denver as a backup to Jake Plummer like a glove. That's my take, at least. Here is ALL the LOCAL talk of late: http://www.denverbroncos.com/page.php?id=334&storyID=2089; http://www.rockymountainnews.com/drmn/broncos/article/0,1299,DRMN_17_273 5947,00.html; http://www.denverpost.com/Stories/0,1413,36%257E86%257E,00.html; http://www.dailycamera.com/bdc/broncos/.

The Broncos continue to improve their secondary and bolster their defense overall. From "The REAL Feed": Denver inks veteran Lynch The Sports Network: NFL (22.03.2004 16:58) This is a FANTASTIC signing by the Broncos. Experience, understanding of success, wisdom and leadership to go along with youth, talent, energy and excitement, which they got with Bailey. They also signed DT Luther Elliss from the Lions. Here are the reports from off "the Gridiron Newsstand": http://www.denverbroncos.com/page.php?id=334&storyID=2135; http://www.denverpost.com/Stories/0,1413,36~86~2034547,00.html. Go Donkos!

Here's a little more on the Hearst signing from "the Gridiron Newsstand": http://www.rockymountainnews.com/drmn/broncos/article/0,1299,DRMN_17_275 8262,00.html. This is yet another GREAT move by the Broncos this offseason. Hearst, though aging, fits their offense like a glove. I would, however, from a fantasy-football perspective temper expectations a bit. I would think that a solid 1,200 rushing yards, 350 receiving yards and 9 total touchdowns would be about what to expect, not Portis or Davis-in-his-prime numbers. Anyway, congrats, Steve, on a GREAT move in the GBRFL! Poor Doug... And, go get 'em, Donkos!

While I am VERY pleased where Hearst ended up, I really just picked him up as a handcuff to Barlow. After all the 49ers and Hearst have been through, I thought he would stay there. |

Just heard the news. I've been busy setting up for an out-of-state family visit. HOWEVER..the prime visiter is my number one 49er fan! Just talked to him, and he says he's now a BRONCO fan (AFC team - his NFC team, and first love football-heart-and-soul, is the 9ers). He used to like the Raiders as his number one AFC team. Good luck, Broncs. I agree you guys have been very busy in the off-season so far. But my 9ers fan has gone with his love for Hearst. I think the guy still has a bit more left in his tank. Ah, Absolom, my Absolom...or however he spelled it... As for fantasy football, either he will be used or he will turn into another Marcus and scream about being a 3rd down back. Hearst has been injured for about 50% of his career, Denver wants a pass receiver RB (unlike Portis, at least not enough for Shanny), the Broncs are looking for a leader/teacher which Hearst can provide, and Denver is adding older players (as per Al Davis mode) to teach and build, not to perform on the field. OK, that's the NFL today. I still hope Hearst knocks 'em dead. But he may show as a third down back, a teacher (read Vinnie Testaverde these days), and work ethic. Can't hurt!!

| Mmmmm... You are a savvier fantasy footballer than that. I think the handcuff was worst-case-scenario insurance (further showing the savviness of this trade... the dual purpose of the acquisition, putting yourself in a win (a little)-win (a lot) situation). I know you had to be at least aware of the possibility of the upswing of his winding up elsewhere and were hoping for such to happen. Again, Denver is the unexpected jackpot, relatively speaking, but you had to know Hearst's leaving San Fran was a very high possibility and landing with Mariucci in Detroit, at least, where he almost did end up, was a very likely scenario.

Based on recent history, here is what you have to know about the Bronco's RB situation: 1. None of us will know who the key guy will be until, at the earliest, the first game of the season. We will bitch and moan more and more as the season approaches about how much Shannahan hates us FF guys (and girls). 2. The Bronco's have the best rushing scheme in the NFL. You cannot afford to ignore this fact. I could put up decent stats as a RB in this system. 3. No matter how talented the backup guys are, there will be one RB that emerges as the primary guy (barring injury). The chances of a RBBC being used are very slim. 4. IF you predict (guess) correctly on the primary guy, you will have one of the best sleepers in your league. Yeah, I know, none of this is earth shattering, but sometimes you have to step back and look at the big picture.

| I am almost in 100% agreement with you, bg. Regarding the quote above, though, given Hearst's age, but being a highly-skilled, name-brand player, Griffin's lack of size, but explosiveness, Anderson's effectiveness around the goal-line and success in the Broncos' system, plus any X-factors, I do think that there is a chance, better than might be expected in the fantasy football world, of a RBBC in Denver for much of '04.

News coming out of "the Gridiron Newsstand" indicates that the Broncos are eyeing disgruntled Browns WR Dennis Northcutt: http://www.rockymountainnews.com/drmn/broncos/article/0,1299,DRMN_17_280 3143,00.html; http://www.denverpost.com/Stories/0,1413,36~86~2079622,00.html. A deal is allegedly in the works. This would really shake up the receiver situation in Denver, perhaps decreasing the fantasy values of both Smith and Lelie. It would be a great pickup for the team, though.

I thought that these reports from "The REAL Feed" and "the Gridiron Newsstand", respectively, were definitely worth passing along: Broncos start finding Portis' replacement SI.com: NFL (10.05.2004 15:07) And, this regarding their predicament at WR, particularly #3 wideout: http://www.dailycamera.com/bdc/broncos/article/0,1713,BDC_2453_2872370,0 0.html. My take on all this. I like Hearst and Anderson to be the main RBBC with Griffin giving breathers and taking over on many 3rd downs. It's not good from a fantasy perspective no matter how you cut it up. As for their receiver situation, all I'll say is that I think that Willie Jackson, who they picked up this offseason, is a sneaky-good pickup.
