Ravens Offseason Report
« on: Mar 12th, 2004, 4:55pm »
Quote Quote Modify Modify

Just to get this thread kicked off...  From "The REAL Feed":

Wright, Brown reach contract agreements with Ravens
NFL.com (12.03.2004 16:02)
The Baltimore Ravens reached contract agreements with quarterback Anthony Wright and offensive lineman Orlando Brown.

LOCAL, or in the case of this source, OFFICIAL corroboration from "the Gridiron Newsstand":

http://www.ravenszone.net/template.php?subsection=single_news_show&s ection=press&content_id=3852.

Though I like Boller, I think if he starts to underproduce/not live up to exprections, Wright could find himself the starter again sooner rather than later.  And, given how he successfully hawked the ball up to Robinson last year, it is intriguing to ponder what he could do with Owens... if he ever "comes around" (literally and figuratively).

Wright is no stud, but does give them some type of experienced depth I guess. With the failed experiment known as Chris Redman, they went to Wright last year as the replacement to Boller when he was hurt, after Redman screwed the pooch. Wright tossed 4 of his 9 TDs in 1 game and had 1 or more INTs in 6 of his 7 games played.
Boller and Wright completed just barely over 50% of their passes. Owens will help that for sure. I think the biggest problem will be the fumbles from the QB position. Boller and Wright combined for 18 fumbles(9 each), that is as many as Tiki. I'm a bit surprised that Billick didnt bring in a more seasoned vet to help mentor Boller instead of Wright. This will have to happen for Boller to improve.
Boller does have upside and TO can help he with that. He can make any qb look good. Billick is a great QB guy and sees some good things in Boller. Owens will be fine wherever he plays.

A little jam update      Ravens | Police & Courts: Jamal Lewis - from www.KFFL.com
Sat, 3 Apr 2004 09:04:49 -0800

Updating a previous report, the Baltimore Sun reports the federal drug conspiracy chargers against Baltimore Ravens RB Jamal Lewis have been weakened by the revelation that the government's key witness has a criminal history. In addition, at least two or three audiotapes that are alleged to contain conversations between Lewis and the U.S. Attorney's confidential informant feature only the informant's voice, said Donald Samuel, one of Lewis' attorneys. "She worked for the FBI in the morning and was committing crime in the afternoon," Samuel said. The informant, identified as Tomeka Michelle Richard, has also used seven aliases, three birth dates and multiple Social Security numbers, according to federal and state records.
Man I hope this is true, have him in a  dyansty league.

Given that the Jamal Lewis situation is pretty big news this offseason, a thread dedicated just to that topic was permitted:

http://www.fantasyfootballer.com/cgi-bin/theGridiron/YaBB.cgi?board=55;a ction=display;num=1077746073.

That having been said, kc, your post above is just fine here. I'm just going about doing my job here keeping things organized and linking together related threads.  Yours is the pattern I usually want followed and to err in this way is better than to err in the opposite direction.  It prevents me from having to lock threads.  In this case, though, I'm kind of glad this thread got a "bump up", anyway.

Ravens QB is Not (W)right

Looks like back-up QB Anthony Wright could miss the ENTIRE 2004 season as he is undergoing surgery to repair a torn labrum in his shoulder.

http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/columns/story?columnist=pasquarelli_len&am p;id=1805686

FF Issues: This might get Kerry Collins into a Raven uni.  Jim Fassel is working for the Ravens now and might push to get Collins in town since the Ravens have ZERO experience at back-up QB now - just a rookie draft pick (Josh Harris) and a free-agent pick-up (Brian Gaither).  With the Ravens being a team who could make a push for the play-offs, an experienced QB could be the missing piece if Boller struggles early.

Collins would be a nice fit for Baltimore. Fassel does like him. They still have serious WR issues and Jamal has the legal things going on. I don't think Baltimore will even make the playoffs this year. They barely made it last year.

I think they really upgraded their WR corps.  Taylor can make plays if he has help.  Kevin Johnson is still a very talented WR and could take the pressure off Taylor some.  Heap is like another WR out there.  Plus they added Devard Darling (a promising rookie) in the draft.  I'm fairly sure Jamal will play the entire year.  Look how long it took to get the Michael Pittman issues dealt with.

Washington Post:

Free agent quarterback Kordell Stewart is mulling a contract offer from
the Baltimore Ravens that apparently would pay him around the minimum
salary. Agent Leigh Steinberg said that Stewart had not decided as of
early last night whether to accept the offer. Stewart would back up Kyle
Boller in place of Anthony Wright, who underwent shoulder surgery
yesterday and said, according to the Associated Press, that he was told by
doctors not to resume throwing for four months.

The Ravens also could wait to see if Tampa Bay's Brad Johnson becomes
available if Rich Gannon is released by the Oakland Raiders and joins
the Bucs.

That's it!  It's done!  From the top of "The REAL Feed":

Kordell agrees to one-year deal with Ravens
ESPN: NFL (02.06.2004 20:29)
Stewart should serve as Boller backupOWINGS MILLS, Md. -- Kordell Stewart agreed to a one-year contract Wednesday with the Baltimore Ravens, who plan to put the quarterback to work immediately. Stewart will receive the league minimum $760,000 to replace the injured Anthony Wright as the backup to...

This is more of a ringing endorsement of Boller if anything.  Fantasy Boller owners should be pleased!

The latest on Jamal Lewis's legal "situation"... from "The REAL Feed":

I hope Jamal gets through this ok, I think he will. I guess they have enough evidence to take him to trial. It will be some type of distraction, just not sure how much. I have moved Jamal done a few slots, and have him at #6 now. He is still a STUD.
I doubt that it will affect the team as a whole, it doesn't seem to be so far. Good Luck Jamal, you should be fine.

First Jamal's trial was said to be going to be in August.  Now they say it'll start November 1st. Whatever!!!  As per "The REAL Feed", here's what JAMAL has to say:

Jamal Lewis Plans to Play Entire Season
AP Sports (13.08.2004 13:51)
Jamal Lewis won't let a November trial date in Atlanta hinder his bid to successfully defend his NFL rushing title and carry the Baltimore Ravens back to the playoffs.

AP Sports (13.08.2004 18:42)
Baltimore Ravens running back Jamal Lewis plans on going for another NFL rushing title, despite a looming November trial date in Atlanta on drug charges.

interesting...i also read yesterday that - despite comments to the contrary - billick seems to be considering a way to let jamal do his trial stuff AND find a way to play on sunday...i've played and been involved in football my entire life - as a trainer, watched BO JACKSON destroy teams on saturday with no more time on the field than walk- throughs...if there is ANY position that doesn't require a week of practice to play - i'm telling you it's RB...to steal a quote from an oft hated wide receiver, "just give him the damn ball"...that's what i think - for what it's worth...

After watching what Lewis did to the Browns last year in BOTH games, I would let him play too!

As for J. Lewis, other players are the ones who need the practice with HIM to do their jobs well.  I have no doubt that, for his own job, he just has to be there.  He knows what he's doing.

But tell us about your training work, prm!
