Browns Offseason Report

Cleveland release Jeff Garcia today.  This essentially leaves Cleveland without a QB.  Garcia is gone, and Holcomb is a free agent.  So what are the Browns going to do?  Resign Holcomb?  Draft a QB?  Try to get someone via free agency?  Free agency is risky since Hasselback is probably going to be the top QB available with lots of suitors.   Holcomb is probably in the top 3 FA QBs this year.

My guess is that the Browns will draft a QB to observe for a year AND sign Drew Bledsoe when he is released from the Bills.  Just a total guess.....

The other question is:

Where will Garcia land?  Dallas?  Miami?  Arizona?  San Fran?  Strong rumors now lead to Tampa Bay.  I will be curious where he ends up.

I feel bad for the guy as a human being.  It's never good for someone to get hurt like that.

That being said, I have to admit that I never wished him well as an NFL player.  I didn't like his attitude coming into the league and don't mind that he still hasn't amounted to anything as an NFL TE.

Not to kick a guy when he's down or anything...  But, the reports say "not life-threatening", not "not career-threatening".  Just thought we should be clear on that!  This guy's career may be over.

The quote I put in the post (see above) was an alert from ESPN radio, so obviously no link.  I just googled the thing and put in the articles I could find as links for younz' () enjoyment.

But ESPN did say "not career-threatening."

(Sorry about the double-post for modify, but at least I got it done in one less post than Steggie's! )

Motorcycle crash may put Winslow's season in jeopardy

http://www.mercurynews.com/mld/mercurynews/sports/11547356.htm

Link doesn't test out, makes you sign up.  So here's the text.

BEREA, Ohio - (KRT) - A motorcycle accident might have Kellen Winslow's status for the 2005 season in question.

Winslow, the Browns' first-round draft choice in 2004, has swelling in his right knee and shoulder after he flipped over the handlebars during a crash Sunday evening.

Winslow was treated for internal injuries Monday at the Cleveland Clinic, but the team said those injuries were stable and not serious.

The swelling in the knee, though, could indicate a bigger problem that won't be known until Winslow is examined further.

WebMD.com lists swelling as a symptom of varying degrees of ligament tears. If Winslow tore a ligament, he could be out for an extended time.

"The extent of these (knee and shoulder) injuries will not be known until further medical evaluation is complete after the swelling is reduced," a statement from the Browns said.

The statement said there was no timetable for Winslow's release from the hospital.

The accident took place as Winslow was learning to ride his 2005 Suzuki GSX-R750, which he bought in April, according to the Associated Press. Winslow and four friends went to a Cuyahoga Community College parking lot in Westlake, near Winslow's home.

Winslow hit a curb and apparently hit the accelerator instead of the brake. That caused him to fly over the windshield.

Westlake police reported that Winslow was going 35 mph when he hit the curb. Winslow was wearing a helmet, but it was not strapped on, and it flew off his head. Alcohol was not involved, police told the AP.

Winslow spent Sunday night in Fairview Hospital, then was sent to the Clinic by ambulance Monday morning so Browns doctors could examine him.

"I have no comment," Winslow's father, Kellen Winslow Sr., said. "I'm not speaking to the press. Anything released about Kellen will come from the Cleveland Browns."

The Browns' only comment came through the statement.

Winslow's agent, Carl Poston, did not return a phone message.

The Browns would not comment on Winslow's contract, but Section 3 of the standard player contract prohibits players from activities that have "significant risk of personal injury."

If the Browns did not want Winslow to ride a motorcycle, the team would have had to specifically write language in Winslow's contract prohibiting that activity, according to the NFL Players Association.

It's not known whether Winslow's contract contained that kind of clause, but the NFLPA official said many contracts have specific items mentioned. A league source said he would be surprised if Winslow's contract did not have specific prohibitions.

In recent years, motorcycle accidents have caused serious injuries to players in other sports.

In June 2003, Chicago Bulls guard Jay Williams broke his pelvis, leg and suffered a serious knee injury when his motorcycle crashed. The Bulls and Williams reached a contract buyout, but Williams has not played since.

In 2001, Jeff Kent (then of the San Francisco Giants) broke his wrist while riding a motorcycle. The team retained Kent.

Former Atlanta Brave Ron Gant missed a full year after shattering his leg in a motorcycle accident in February 1994. The Braves voided his contract after the accident.

Winslow, a tight end, only played in two games last season due to a broken fibula in his left leg.

Also this:

KFFL Breaking News
Winslow may Miss 2005 Season

Clark Judge, of SportsLine.com, reports the Cleveland Browns are concerned injuries suffered by TE Kellen Winslow Jr. in his motorcycle accident may cost him the entire 2005 season. The primary problem, sources said, are potentially significant injuries to the right knee and right shoulder. The team cannot confirm the extent of the injuires until the swelling in the knee and shoulder subside. In addition, sources said the Browns believe Winslow may have suffered a punctured lung and an injury to his kidney, but neither of those injuries has the team overly concerned.

I find it interesting how, before (and immediately after) he was drafted in 2004, you couldn't shut Kellen Winslow, Sr., or Carl Poston up.  Now, once they realize what an idiot their son/client is they have nothing to say.

Winslow likely done for the year:

"The Tribune Chronicle has learned that Winslow suffered a tear of the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee. Surgery will be required, which means that Winslow will likely miss the upcoming season."

http://www.tribune-chronicle.com/sports/story/055202005_spt01winslow05.a sp

"Winslow is the latest in what has become a long list of Browns first-round draft choices that haven't panned out. Quarterback Tim Couch (1999) is out of football with a sore arm. Defensive end Courtney Brown (2000) had an injury-riddled five-year run and was released in March. Defensive tackle Gerard Warren (2001) never played up to expectations and was recently traded to Denver. Running back William Green (2002) was arrested for DUI and possession of marijuana and is in Stage 2 of the NFL's drug program. Center Jeff Faine (2003) has finished both of his seasons on injured-reserve with leg injuries."

Looking to pick up Braylon Edwards this year???

Being a Browns fan all my life and watching them have seasons full of ups and downs what more can you expect.  Yes Winslow is done for another season.  The games he did play last year he did nothing.  And to think I drafted him in the 6th Round last year in FF.  Hopefully Winslow is ready for next year(cross your fingers).  With that said hopefully he doesn't ask to be traded or ask for more money.  I am happy the Browns drafted B. Edwards.  Maybe in 5 more years the Browns will be a good team
