by Rick Gould Time & Date of this Update (PST): 17:00 on Mon Apr 03 2006 News: Offseason Thoughts Fantasy Football Slant : St Louis fans are upbeat about the new coaching staff for the Rams. Years of "Control Freak" Martz crap had disallusioned even his most fervent defenders. Finally, the hiring of cronies as coaches, regardless of ability, has ended in St Louis. Linehan may not be considered an offensive genius like Martz, but his track record shows that he knows how to inject life into an attack and he worked wonders with the Dolphins offense this past season. If he can find some reinforcements to help protect Bulger, the Rams should continue to score points. Hiring Haslett to take care of the defense was a great move, as was bringing aboard Venturi to take over the spot if Haslett becomes a head coach again. The Rams look like they can contend for a division title again right away. Linehan offered a glimpse at his playbook and offensive philosophy at the NFC coaches breakfast last week in Orlando. Highlights included: A no-huddle offense for at least parts of most games. An audible system for Marc Bulger and the Rams quarterbacks. Fewer seven-step drops on pass plays. Fewer four-receiver sets. An expanded role for the tight end in the passing game. And a simplified playbook and game plan. My initial thoughts on this approach is a bit more ball and clock control. Four of the five highlights above mean less hits on the quarterback, a big issue with Martz run offenses whether it was Kurt Warner or Marc Bulger. In addition, both the "no huddle" and audibles should improve the pace and tempo of the offense. | PLAYER | COMMENTS | | Gus Frerotte | This deal instantly gives the Rams an experienced backup behind starter Marc Bulger. Big upgrade over Jamie Martin. | | | | Fakhir Brown | Ex-Saint Brown joins a crowded defensive backfield that is wanting for talented cover men. Brown will likely be given a shot to compete for a spot, whether it is to fill the role vacated by Corey Ivy as a nickel back or to step in as a special teamer. | | | | Will Witherspoon | Perhaps the crown jewel in a flurry of moves meant to improve the Rams 30th ranked defense. Witherspoon earned a reputation as an athletic player best fit for the weak side. But Witherspoon will take over in the middle for Chris Claiborne. Another Big upgrade. | | | | Corey Chavous | In 2005, he started all 16 games, finishing fourth on the team in tackles. Another Big upgrade at either safety position. | | | | La Roi Glover | Rams have brought in one of the NFLs most consistent, dependable players, regardless of position. Glovers addition should bring some stability to the defensive line. | | | | Adam Archuleta | To Redskins. No loss for Rams especially with pickup of Chavous. It will be interesting to see if, fully recovered from injuries, Archuleta can return to his days of "John Lynch" type defensive play. | | | | Corey Ivy | To Ravens. 2nd biggest loss, Basically nickel back but one of very few that played defense with enthusiasm last year. Has the makings of a playmaker. | | | | Damione Lewis | To Panthers. Simply put, has the tools but is an underachiever. Biggest hit last year was to the groin of an opponent. | | | Ryan Pickett | To Packers. Definitely biggest loss. One of few shining stars on pathetic Rams defense. | | | Rex Tucker | To Lions. No loss. | | | Arlen Harris | To Lions. Can't believe anyone picked him up. For some reason, Martz likes Harris. | Time & Date of this Update (PST): 17:00 on Fri Dec 30 2005 News: Week 17 Preview Fantasy Football Slant : I tried to warn the 49ers about the "trap game" against the Rams. Now they have opened up the field for the Reggie Bush Sweepstakes and may be on the outside looking in come draft day. Thank goodness the Rams go on the road to play the Cowboys, they have been tough to watch in person over the past few weeks. The Rams offense will have some, but not a lot of success against the Cowboys. Jamie Martin and Torry Holt were the standouts last week and I expect the same from Holt this week. The running game and Steven Jackson's fantasy value has disappeared over the past few weeks. I am struggling to determine the source of the breakdown. Unimaginative playcalling, soft running, lead blocking or all of the above. I do not think it will be solved this week. Yikes! A good runner against the Rams woeful rush defense. That spells big fanatasy numbers for Julius Jones! I even expect Bledsoe to carve up the Rams defense at will. If your fantasy championship is this week I would load up on them Cowboys and avoid all Rams except for Torry Holt and Jeff Wilkins. | PLAYER | COMMENTS | FANTASY ROLE | | Jamie Martin | Not a fantasy playoff starter. | Low #3 | | | | Steven Jackson | Servicable fantasy stats, but we expected so much more. | #2 | | | | Marshall Faulk | Probably won't get the touches. | #4 | | | | Torry Holt | Cha Ching! Fantasy money in the bank. Expect the usual from Torry. | #1 | | | | Isaac Bruce | Solid yardage. Needs to find endzone consistently to be of more fantasy value. | Low #3 | | | | Kevin Curtis | Who? | N/A | | | | Jeff Wilkins | Getting long distance chances. Should have solid week. | #2 | | | | DEF/ST | The worst I've seen in years. | N/A | PLEASE do NOT post to this thread! This thread is only to be appended to by Rick Gould.

Time & Date of this Update (PST): 15:30 on Fri Oct 7 2005 News: Week 5 Preview Fantasy Football Slant : It's division rivalry week as the Seahawks swoop into St Louis to play the enigma we like to call the Rams. Both teams are 2-2 and this game favors the home team. Therefore it's the Rams turn. When the Rams have the ball: All I can say is 442 passing yards! I got the impression the Giants put 8 men in the box on defense to force the Rams to throw the ball. Martz completely returned to form. He tries to run the ball early in obvious running situations and when unsuccessful, abandons it entirely. If the Rams continue to play "Arena Football", Bulger and all wide receivers will benefit. In support of that effort, rookie Alex Barron and the O-line played well and Bulger had time to pass all day. With 14 total rushing attempts it is hard to say much of anything about the running game. Steven Jackson was tentative and could not find any running room. Fantasy wise Jackson had a respectable day overall and that should continue. The Rams have been decimated at tight end with the loss of Roland Williams and the injury to Brandon Manumaleuna. They resigned Cam Cleeland to help at the tight end position. The Rams like to use two tight ends with Brandon playing the H back position. Missing these 2 players may have contributed to the lack of running success. When the Rams are on ST/Defense: The Rams offense will give Jeff Wilkins some scoring opportunities. Wilkins missed his first field goal of the season last week. The Rams special teams were average or below last week. Punting and punt returns suck for the Rams, but not a lot of that is going on when you play the Rams. The forecast is for warm temperatures in Hell on Sunday, so I would not be too concerned about anything special happening. I expect Shawn Alexander, Darrel Jackson(or any tall receiver with a pulse), and Jeremy Stevens to have success against the no gap filling, coverage mistake riddled, and non-aggressive Rams defense. I would not consider any Ram defensive players as starters. | PLAYER | COMMENTS | FANTASY ROLE | | Mark Bulger | Solid starter. Just think 442. If Bulger is not arm weary he should have success against the Seahawks at home. | Low #1 | | | | Steven Jackson | So much for a balanced attack. Solid fantasy stats with 59 total yards and 2 tds. It sure seems like he could do more, but maybe not in this offense. | #2 | | | | Marshall Faulk | Once again unless Jackson is slowed by injuries, Faulk just won't get enough touches. There is not enough involvement by the rb position in this offense to share fantasy points. | Low #3 | | | | Torry Holt | Torry will play big at home against division rival. If you need more incentive, Holt historically kills the Seahawks. Automatic start. | High #1 | | | | Isaac Bruce | Listed as doubtful with Turf Toe. My feeling is the Reverend will be held out again this week. | Low #3 | | | | Kevin Curtis | He will get the looks from Bulger. Last week he sat out a couple of series with blurred vision, which hurt his production. From a fantasy perspective Bulger spreads the ball around so much it is difficult to decide who to start after Holt. | low #2 | | | | Shaun McDonald | Big numbers from the slot last week. Could be McDonald or could be Dane Looker. Good luck trying to figure this one out. | Low #3 | | | | Brandon Manumaleuna | Brandon is mainly a blocking tight end in a wide open pass offense. Whether he will make a catch, let alone for yardage or a td is similar in odds to lightning striking inside the "ED" dome. Brandon is listed as questionable, but you have to have better options than this. | Low #3 | | | | Jeff Wilkins | A starter, week in and week out. | Low #1 | | | | DEF/ST | CARDIAC ARREST! NURSE! BRING ME THE PADDLES STAT! Not worth looking in this space. | Low #3 | Time & Date of this Update (PST): 19:30 on Thur Sep 29 2005 News: Week 4 Preview Fantasy Football Slant : The St Louis Rams limp into New York this week. The Giants are back home after surrendering 45 points on the road and I look for them to take out their frustration on the shaky 2-1 Rams. I got sick to my stomach listening to Joe Theisman and Paul Maguire gushing over Eli Manning on Sunday night. Here's hoping Eli isn't playing as good as those two think. When the Rams have the ball: Both Steven Jackson and Marshall Faulk looked sharp running the ball last Sunday. Jackson left the game to have his ribs x-rayed and according to Torry Holt, Marshall put on his superman cape and took the field. Jackson returned late in the game, but is listed as questionable this week. Bulger at times plays like an elite NFL quarterback and then at times does not look in control. Having been sacked 15 times in 3 games I know he was excited when rookie right tackle, Alex Barron finally made it into the game. On his second NFL play, Barron pancaked Titans defensive end Kyle Vanden Bosch, who up to that point was threatening to end Bulger's career. This bodes well for the future health and accuracy of Mark Bulger. Martz's playcalling was sharp and at times made the Titans look foolish. Could this be the new, maturer side of "Mad Mike"? Okay so it was only the Titans, but still... When the Rams are on ST/Defense: With the exception of Jeff Wilkins, the Rams special teams are not special. Hell will freeze over, and the NHL will setup an expansion team there who will win the Stanley Cup in their first year, before they make a big play. I will not be surprised if Jeremy Shockey has a big game, as the Rams still struggle to cover opposing tight ends. At running back, Tiki Barber is the best the Rams will have faced so far this year. The rest of the Giant offense is not scary to me. The only IDP to consider would be Leonard Little who has 3.5 sacks. | PLAYER | COMMENTS | FANTASY ROLE | | Mark Bulger | Solid starter. Fantasy numbers are solid, but still has some upside potential if O-line gives him time in the pocket. If they do, Bulger will get monster yards and touchdowns. | Low #1 | | | | Steven Jackson | Martz is calling a more balanced attack which is to Jackson's advantage though I am not confident Jackson will do much better than last week. Best move last week was Steven on the cover of the St Louis Rams Insider magazine sold at the stadium. To quote my wife "Now that is Hot Hot Hot!" Based on Martz's comments, I expect Jackson to start. | #2 | | | | Marshall Faulk | Good News:Looked like the Marshall of old in relief of Jackson. Bad News:Unless Jackson is slowed by injuries, Faulk just won't get enough touches. | Low #3 | | | | Torry Holt | Torry was wide open all last week. He will get his yards again. | High #1 | | | | Isaac Bruce | Listed as doubtful with Turf Toe. My feeling is the Reverend will be held out this week. Even if he plays, I can't see him being very effective. | Low #3 | | | | Kevin Curtis | 40+ yards and a td in the second half last week. I would expect a solid start from Curtis. | low #2 | | | | Shaun McDonald | Should start if Bruce sits. Too much of a reach in my book. | Low Low #3 | | | | Brandon Manumaleuna | Brandon came up short keeping his 1 catch per week streak alive. In his defense, Brandon missed part of the first and second quarter with a sprained left knee and is listed as probable this week. | Low #3 | | | | Jeff Wilkins | A starter, week in and week out. | Low #1 | | | | DEF/ST | Pulse getting stronger. Could be bye week insert at home some time this season. Watch this space. | Low #3 | Time & Date of this Update (PST): 16:00 on Fri Sep 23 2005 News: Week 3 Preview Fantasy Football Slant : Summary: The Tennessee Titans roar into town this weekend for a rematch of Super Bowl XXXIV. This is still a BIG grudge match for the Titans and the first time they've met in a regular season matchup since that game. The Rams are a great at home, winning 81% of the time in St Louis since 1999. They average 31 points per game at home. The Titans, on the other hand, hold the NFL's best road record since 1995 and arrive in St Louis on the back of a crushing defeat of the Ravens. St Louis survived a not so convincing victory over the Cardinals. In the league of parity, the home team is winning 67% of the time this year. I think this is one of those times. When the Rams have the ball: They are doing a good job of running the football with all packages and all situations. Per usual, protecting Bulger is key to the Ram's offensive success as he has been sacked 11 times in the first two games. A word of caution, the Titans had 6 sacks last week alone. On the flip side, Titans' opponents have scored all six times they reached the redzone, four of those for touchdowns. I personally don't think the Titan's secondary can keep up with the speed of the Rams. With that said, I expect the Ram's offense to get in-sync and light up the scoreboard this week. When the Rams are on ST/Defense: The Rams special teams were improved last week, but are at best adequate with no real potential for scoring. It is still wait and see on the defense, though the defensive line at times dominated the Arizona Cardinals front five. The only possible IDPs to consider would be Leonard Little who has 3 sacks and Dejuan Groce at cornerback who has 1 interception, a beautiful over the shoulder pick on a deep pass from Kurt Warner. Week #3 Player by Player Review: This analysis is based on your average 10- to 12-team league and standard scoring, with touchdowns and yardage being evenly weighted. The "Projected Fantasy Role" is where you should plan on lining that player up on your fantasy team from week to week. | PLAYER | COMMENTS | PROJECTED FANTASY ROLE | | | | Mark Bulger | Solid starter. This should be the beginning of the Rams offensive explosion. A more balanced attack might keep Bulger on his feet and shredding the defense. | Low #1 | | | | Steven Jackson | Rushing yardage may be tougher to come by as the Titans held the Ravens to 14 yards rushing. The Rams must be persistent and score early to allow Steven to run effectively. | High #2 | | | | Marshall Faulk | Still waiting for Martz to find a way to use Marshall's talents. Can not recommend until Marshall gets more involved in the offense. | Low #3 in desperation only. | | | | Torry Holt | The student has become the teacher. Holt may be the best overall receiver in the NFL. Holt has averaged 85.2 yards receiving per game in his NFL career, which is the league's top figure since 1999. | High #1 | | | | Isaac Bruce | He can still make it happen. This memory keeps replaying in my mind, Super Bowl XXXIV and the Titans score to take the lead with 2 minutes to go. The Ram's response? 1st play 73 yard td pass to Isaac. | Low #2 | | | | Kevin Curtis | This could be the week as the Titans focus on stopping Torry and Isaac. I would not be surprised if Kevin has a big game. | #3 | | | | Shaun McDonald | Not much of anything last week, no injuries to the top 3 receivers...leave him on the waiver wire. | N/A | | | | Roland Williams | Good blocker and locker room influence. | N/A | | | | Brandon Manumaleuna | Brandon continues on pace for 16 catches this season. In desperation due to injury and bye week problem, you might get lucky that his one catch is in the end zone. | Low #3 | | | | Jeff Wilkins | A starter, week in and week out. | Low #1 | | | | DEF/ST | Still on respirator, but responding to treatment. Bench until further notice. | Low #3 | | | Time & Date of this Update (PST): 18:45 on Fri Sep 16 2005 News: Week 2 Preview Fantasy Football Slant: Summary: This is the ultimate matchup for the Rams this week. St Louis hates the Arizona Cardinal's owner Bill Bidwell as much as they still hate Don Denkinger (Cardinals vs Royals Game 6, 1985 World Series,). Kurt Warner wants to prove the Rams shouldn't have given up on him, though he is too nice to admit it. The only thing worse than losing to the Arizona Cardinals, would be losing to them in St Louis. It just can't happen... or it's back to therapy for me. With that said, it is somewhat an even matchup. When the Rams have the ball: Both teams have a potent passing offense if given time in the pocket. The edge should go to the Rams with Steven Jackson's running ability, assuming of course they don't pass 56 times. Both offenses should have success so I would not recommend betting the under. When the Rams are on ST/Defense: The Rams and Cardinals' special teams were exposed last week. Defenses are both average. The Rams defense held the 49ers to minimal offensive output, but still got burned a couple of times. If Warner is given time, the secondary could be in trouble covering Boldin and Fitzgerald. Key Matchup: Mike Martz's Play Calling vs Commonsense I think the Rams have the offensive tools to put up a lot of fantasy points. However, fantasy scoring may be limited to just yardage if Martz continues to go against conventional wisdom in the red zone. I would suggest either running plays or plays that work against a blitzing defense. Week #2 Player by Player Review: This analysis is based on your average 10- to 12-team league and standard scoring, with touchdowns and yardage being evenly weighted. The "Projected Fantasy Role" is where you should plan on lining that player up on your fantasy team from week to week. | PLAYER | COMMENTS | PROJECTED FANTASY ROLE | | | | Mark Bulger | Solid starter. Must shake off the rust, be decisive, and get rid of the ball quickly. | Low #1 | | | | Steven Jackson | Steven should have room to run. Just have to give him the ball. | High #2 | | | | Marshall Faulk | Limited use last week. | Low #3 | | | | Arlen Harris | Should not even be listed. | No Value | | | | Torry Holt | Arizona may take away the deep ball, but Torry still gets his catches. | High #1 | | | | Isaac Bruce | If Rams keep it on the ground. The Reverend will just be in supporting cast. | #2 | | | | Kevin Curtis | He may be a 3rd wide receiver worthy of starting, but not just yet. | Low #3 | | | | Shaun McDonald | Looked good last week, but #4 receiver? He will step in when and if there are injuries. | N/A | | | | Roland Williams | I still expect Roland to contribute at some point this season, though maybe not this week. | Low #3 | | | | Brandon Manumaleuna | Brandon gets his weekly catch. | Low #3 | | | | Jeff Wilkins | A starter, week in and week out. | Low #1 | | | | DEF/ST | Bench until further notice. Showing signs of improvement. | Low #3 | | | PLEASE do NOT post to this thread! This thread is only to be appended to by Rick Gould.

News: Week 11 - Homecoming Week Fantasy Football Slant : Kurt and Brenda Warner return to St Louis this week. Kurt having sold his soul to the devil for those Super Bowl years now is having to spend the rest of his career playing in hell, or as I like to call it, the Arizona Cardinals. In addition to the reunion, we return to our favorite St Louis past time, pummeling the Arizona Cardinals and their idiot owner Bill Bidwell. No matter how many times it happens, it is still enjoyable. I should have known that once it appeared that the Rams coaching staff knew what they were doing on offense, they would shoot themselves in the foot. Last week the Rams had little success in the red zone, were pass happy, and fooled no one on a fake field goal. I will be shocked if they don't try to run, control the ball more, and protect their weak defense. Update of the Rams disfunction: Unknown veteran player throws the defensive line under the bus for not playing hard. The offensive coordinator for the Rams got into a fight with the running back coach. Damn! I wish someone on defense would get that mad! With that said, I would expect a shoot-out with a lot of fantasy opportunities. Though Mark Bulger and Torry Holt were a little rusty last week, those two along with Steven Jackson should be in your lineup. Isaac Bruce had 1 catch so I would keep him on your bench until he shows signs of life. For the Cardinals, safe starts would be Larry Fitzgerald, Kurt Warner, and of course Neil Rackers. Anquan Boldin may play and if so should be added to this list. I could be wrong, but even the Ram's defense should be able to stop the Cardinals rushing attack. | PLAYER | COMMENTS | FANTASY ROLE | | Mark Bulger | Will be sharper and will light it up at home this week. | Low #1 | | | | Steven Jackson | I do not feel he got enough rushing attempts last week but still had 115 total yards. | High #2 | | | | Marshall Faulk | Not enough touches. | #4 | | | | Torry Holt | Should improve each week. I expect a big game from Torry. | #1 | | | | Isaac Bruce | Limited action last week. Not sure what to think until he proves it on the field. | Low #3 | | | | Kevin Curtis | Got stuffed at the line of scrimmage on at least a couple of occasions by the Seahawk defenders. I hope this is not a trend. | #3 | | | | Shaun McDonald | Limited opportunities with Holt and Bruce active. | Low #4 | | | | Jeff Wilkins | Red zone inefficiency is a good thing for Wilkins. | #2 | | | | DEF/ST | Good matchup against a horrible offensive line and shaky quarterback so may be a sleeper. Play at your own risk! | Low #2 | Time & Date of this Update (PST): 14:30 on Fri Nov 11 2005 News: Week 10 - Division Rivalry Fantasy Football Slant : Week 10 brings the division battle between the Rams and the Seahawks at Qwest Field. This is a must win for the Rams to keep their playoff hopes alive or it will be an official changing of the guard in the NFC-West. I expect there will be enough fantasy points to go around for both teams. All recent games between these two teams have been close. The normal scenario is Alexander runs wild, the Rams keep it close, and the Rams win in the final minutes 3 of the last 4 games. The advantage the Rams have going for them this time (I can't believe I'm saying this) is a balanced attack. They will not abandon the run, but will stick with it as long as possible. If Joe Vitt wins this one, I will be the first, but not last to say "Mike who?" Steven Jackson, Mark Bulger and Torry Holt should be in your starting lineup this week. With Isaac Bruce's status still questionable, Kevin Curtis has upside potential as the #2 receiver. All fantasy scoring positions for the Seahawks look solid this week with the most obvious being Shaun Alexander, Joe Jurevicius, and Jeremy Stevens. Bobby Engram was not a factor in his first week back. | PLAYER | COMMENTS | FANTASY ROLE | | Mark Bulger | Back in the saddle with something he is not used to...a balanced attack. | Low #1 | | | | Steven Jackson | Monster game last week. Joe Vitt will feed him the ball. | High #2 | | | | Marshall Faulk | Not enough touches. Just waiting on an injury. | #4 | | | | Torry Holt | Always a threat. This balanced attack thing may actually help Torry get open. We shall see if "Big Game" steps up. | Low #1 | | | | Isaac Bruce | Bruce has been inactive a long time. Watch the injury updates for current status. | Low #3 | | | | Kevin Curtis | Scorched the Jaguars early last week. Still worth considering in your lineup. | #2 | | | | Shaun McDonald | Limited opportunities with Holt and Bruce active. | Low #4 | | | | Jeff Wilkins | Not enough field goal opportunities. | #2 | | | | DEF/ST | The stars are not aligned! The Rams are not at home and not playing a weak opponent. No Way! | Low #4 | Time & Date of this Update (PST): 14:30 on Fri Nov 4 2005 News: Week 9 - BYE WEEK Fantasy Football Slant : Thank goodness for parody! The Jaguars missed two field goals, failed on a fake field goal, and threw a 25 yard incomplete pass on 4th and 1. Irregardless of those mistakes, the Rams outplayed the Jaguars and were victorious. Week 10 brings the division battle between the Rams and the Seahawks in Seattle. Mark Bulger and Torry Holt should be healed and in the starting lineup. Isaac Bruce is still a question mark. 2nd Half Preview: Something has changed in the Rams. As first thought, they are NOT reverting to the "Lambs" of the 1990's. AU CONTRAIRE! They appear more disciplined and aggressive on defense and special teams and dare I say "SMASHMOUTH" on offense. Joe "Ground Chuck" Vitt has got the offense on a roll and with success running the ball they will stretch the field with the post and deep-in patterns. With that said, I would get Steven Jackson, Mark Bulger, and Torry Holt in your starting lineup each week. I personally will be starting Kevin Curtis until his production drops off. If the #1 cornerbacks over the past few weeks can't shut him down, I am not sure a safety or nickel back can either. I think the biggest risk is Isaac Bruce who should be watched carefully. I still believe that Marshall Faulk has value and if given the ball in space still has a lot to offer. It's just a damn shame! Sorry about the soapbox...barring injury, he doesn't have much fantasy value. From a fantasy perspective the Rams have a favorable schedule going forward. Weeks 10 - 13 at Seattle vs Arizona at Houston vs Washington The Seahawks game is a must win and the Rams beat them twice on the road last year. And I am not convinced the Redskins are for real. Weeks 14 - 16 (playoff weeks) at Minnetonka vs Philadelphia vs San Francisco The Eagles game might be a bit rough but the other 2 are fantasy matchups you want to be in on. If your fantasy league ignores yardage allowed, with the right matchup at home, the Rams D/ST are starting to look like a fantasy option. Excuse me, I think I just threw my back out jumping on the bandwagon again. Jeff Wilkins has been reliable, just not explosive. I would rank him just outside the top ten kickers this year. Time & Date of this Update (PST): 18:00 on Fri Oct 29 2005 News: Week 8 Preview Fantasy Football Slant : Early in the Ram's game this past week someone noted that all we were missing was Tony Banks and it would have really felt like 1997. In the end, a not very good Rams team beat a very bad Saints team. If the Rams don't get their act together, they will receive a rude awakening this weekend when the Jacksonville Jaguars come to town. I predict pain and suffering for the Rams. When the Rams have the ball: The passing offense was inconsistent against the Saints. One excuse is that the Rams were missing 3 Pro Bowl players on offense. Bulger, Holt, and Bruce are all doubtful and not expected to play again this week. This is not good news playing against the #2 pass defense in the NFL. Have the days of "Ground Chuck" returned? We are talking balanced offense baby! 27 rushing plays is unheard of in St Louis. Running the ball this week becomes even more critical. When the Rams are on ST/Defense: Rams continued with success in the Red Zone so Jeff Wilkin's 4 of the 5 scoring chances were XPs last week. He may not get as many chances this week. The Rams defense was more than respectable once they settled down from a fantasy perspective. However, do not trust them as a team or individually. Picking offensive players to excel against the Rams is just too easy. Fred Taylor and Jimmy Smith are this week's automatics. | PLAYER | COMMENTS | FANTASY ROLE | | Jamie Martin | I would not get my hopes up too high. No turnovers would be a successful day. | #3 | | | | Steven Jackson | Solid game last week. To have a chance, the Rams have to successfully run the ball. Should be tougher running this week but is safest Ram to start. | #2 | | | | Marshall Faulk | It is tough to watch a future Hall of Famer with so little involvement in the game plan. | #4 | | | | Torry Holt | Last minute scratch last week and is doubtful this week. Even if he miraculously plays, temper your expectations based on PCL injury, Jamie Martin starting, and the Jaguars defense. | Low #2 | | | | Isaac Bruce | Listed as doubtful with Turf Toe. See you after the bye week. | N/A | | | | Kevin Curtis | Continues to get average-to-solid fantasy stats each week and is the only consistent receiving weapon for the Rams this week. | #2 | | | | Shaun McDonald | Had the looks, but missed too many opportunities. There should be better options out there. A possibility in a pinch with all of the injuries. | Low #3 | | | | Dane Looker | Was the third wide receiver last week and had 1 more catch than McDonald. I would not consider. | Low #4 | | | | Jeff Wilkins | Missed an early 47 yard attempt last week. A starter, week in and week out. | Low #1 | | | | DEF/ST | Only embarrassing in the first quarter...an improvement. Still don't care! | N/A | Time & Date of this Update (PST): 15:30 on Fri Oct 21 2005 News: Week 7 Preview Fantasy Football Slant : Just when you think things can't get worse, Bulger pulls the bonehead play of the week. Bulger is the key to the Rams offense and will probably be out until after their bye week. The only good news is that the Ram's get a chance to rebound in this week's matchup against the lowly Saints. When the Rams have the ball: The passing offense is in question with Jamie Martin at the reins. Though he started strong in relief last week, the Colts defense quickly confused him into throwing 2 interceptions and forcing a fumble. The Rams should be able to run effectively against the Saints and should try to pound the ball to open up the defense for the pass. Steven Jackson is running hard and Marshall Faulk pulled a "Lazarus" and looked sharp when given the opportunity. When the Rams are on ST/Defense: Jeff Wilkins will continue to get his scoring chances. He may see more FG opportunities than XP with Martin starting. If the Saints had Joe Horn and Deuce McAllister healthy they could be fantasy studs this week. The last time Aaron Stecker started for the Saints against the Rams, he rushed for 100+ yards and we thought he was headed to the HOF. I would expect Az Hakim and Antoine Smith to have some success. If my calendar is correct, Donte Stallworth had a good week last week, so he will take this week off. You might look for Ernie Conwell to get some passes thrown his way. Not that it needs to be said, but I would not consider any Ram defensive players as starters. | PLAYER | COMMENTS | FANTASY ROLE | | Jamie Martin | May put up some fantasy numbers, but this could be reduced by turnovers and the defense not getting off the field. I might look elsewhere. | #3 | | | | Steven Jackson | Ran hard in the first half against the Colts and then was forgotten. Maybe this week the Rams can stick to the run. | #2 | | | | Marshall Faulk | Marshall was more involved in the offense this week, but does not get enough touches. It's obvious he is no longer a major part of the game plan. | Low #3 | | | | Torry Holt | Always a good matchup. Bulger's injury hurt his fantasy stats last week. That impact will probably continue, but you have to start him. | High #1 | | | | Isaac Bruce | Listed as doubtful with Turf Toe. It's possible Bruce won't return until after the St. Louis bye week. | Low #3 | | | | Kevin Curtis | Solid stats in replacement of Bruce. Continues to get average-to-solid fantasy stats each week. | low #2 | | | | Shaun McDonald | Dane Looker had more touches in Indianapolis last week. Still has some upside as long as Bruce is out. But I would rather start the Saint's third wide receiver this week. | Low #3 | | | | Jeff Wilkins | A starter, week in and week out. | Low #1 | | | | DEF/ST | The Rams defense held early and then collapsed. Not completely their fault, but who cares? They continue to embarrass. | N/A | Time & Date of this Update (PST): 09:00 on Sat Oct 15 2005 News: Week 6 Preview Fantasy Football Slant : Out of the frying pan and into the fire. With Mike Martz taking an extended leave of absence, the Rams are a rudderless ship heading into a Monday night showdown in Indianapolis against the Colts. That said, this game has the potential to be a FANTASY POINT EXPLOSION! When the Rams have the ball: The Rams offense has been out of sync early and endured terrible field position. However, once rolling they can put 30 points on the board against anyone. Bulger was sacked another 4 times but in general had plenty of time to pass. Steven Jackson had limited running success early, but performed solidly running and receiving out of the backfield the rest of the day. We will have to wait and see how the Martz-less offense will look. Could we see more balance? Not when they fall behind early as expected. When the Rams are on ST/Defense: Per usual, Jeff Wilkins will get his scoring chances. The Rams special teams returned the opening kickoff for a touchdown. With that said, the punting and punt return teams continue to suck for the Rams. The list of Colts that could have success on offense is nearly endless. Based on recent history, the Rams will continue to be passive and make coverage mistakes in the secondary. This could be a breakout week for Dallas Clark because the Rams don't like to cover the tight end. I would not consider any Ram defensive players as starters. | PLAYER | COMMENTS | FANTASY ROLE | | Mark Bulger | Solid starter. Slow start last week hurt his numbers. I am not sure there are many defenses that can shut this offense down. | Low #1 | | | | Steven Jackson | Appears recovered from early season chest injury. He continues to be a solid start for total yardage and a touchdown or so. | #2 | | | | Marshall Faulk | No offensive touches and one pass thrown in his direction? You have got to be kidding me! Maybe the homecoming in Indianapolis and the lack of Martz influence in the offense will help this situation. | Low #3 | | | | Torry Holt | Always a good matchup. Expect much of the same from Big Game. Listed as questionable, but should play. | High #1 | | | | Isaac Bruce | Listed as doubtful with Turf Toe. I get the impression no one wants to rush Bruce back into the lineup. | Low #3 | | | | Kevin Curtis | Solid stats in replacement of Bruce. The Rams will undoubtedly play from behind so they will throw the ball downfield. | low #2 | | | | Shaun McDonald | McDonald is the third receiver on the Rams and should be good for 4-6 catches a game as long as Bruce is out. Has yet to find the end zone. | Low #3 | | | | Jeff Wilkins | A starter, week in and week out. | Low #1 | | | | DEF/ST | Hopefully they will watch the Colts defense and gets some tips. They are an embarrassment. | N/A |

Time & Date of this Update (PST): 20:00 on Fri Dec 23 2005 News: Week 16 Preview Fantasy Football Slant : "NO EXCUSES!" This new motto of Rams Coach Vitt is usually followed by every excuse in the book. Nothing short of a Festivus miracle can save the Rams at this point in the season. Different week, different story, same result. The Rams yanked the rookie qb. To offset this good move, after watching Marshall Faulk play like a Hall of Famer with 100+ total yards, Coach Vitt decides that Arlen Harris, 3rd string waste of space, should play the last series with the Rams needing a field goal to win. Here is a great quote from Vitt on that decision. "Our linebackers hate going against Arlen in training camp." WHAT!?! I think I miss Mike Martz. The 49ers, looking solid in the Reggie Bush derby, come to visit this Saturday. This could be a "trap game" for the 49ers as they need to be careful not to look past the Rams and forward to the Bush Bowl next week in Houston. The Rams can choke via a number of techniques and pull defeat from the jaws of victory when you least expect it. The Rams have me a bit confused this week on offense. We may see Martin at qb, Marshall Faulk at rb, and even a balanced attack. How can Holt and Bruce get 32 yards receiving between them and McDonald lead the team in yardage and receptions? I think the Rams offense will have success against the woeful 49ers, but I am not confident who it will be. It should be Torry Holt and Steven Jackson. There is no way Torry gets held down two weeks in a row. Jackson had decent stats playing only a half last week. If he starts, he should have success. Everyone else is suspect based on a combination of skill, coaching, and playcalling. I hope that most of the Rams players and all of the 49ers players are not on your fantasy team, but just in case. Frank Gore could pick up some fantasy points and possibly the 49ers tight end, whoever he is this week. | PLAYER | COMMENTS | FANTASY ROLE | | Jamie Martin | Not a fantasy playoff starter. Should play adequately. | Low #3 | | | | Steven Jackson | Probable this week with a hip pointer. Otherwise should have solid game. | #2 | | | | Marshall Faulk | Looked real good last week. Probably won't get the touches. | #4 | | | | Torry Holt | Expect the usual from Torry. Anyway, you can't change now! | #1 | | | | Isaac Bruce | Should have average to solid game. | Low #3 | | | | Kevin Curtis | Poof! He has disappeared. | Low #3 | | | | Jeff Wilkins | Should have another solid week. | #2 | | | | DEF/ST | This Space for Rent. | N/A | Time & Date of this Update (PST): 18:00 on Fri Dec 16 2005 News: Week 15 Preview Fantasy Football Slant : The Rams are falling faster than Shayna Richardson making her first solo skydiving jump. And the result has been just as catastrophic. Different week, same story. The Rams hung their hopes on the back of a rookie qb. The result was 5 interceptions on the day for Fitzpatrick. The running game wasn't totally abandoned, but this was not a balanced attack. Jackson had 19 carries for 67 yards. The Eagles come to visit this Sunday. Both teams are struggling on offense with 2nd and 3rd string qbs. The Rams have as many playmakers on defense as the Eagles have on offense...none. This used to be a huge game for both teams, but now it is just the third to last game before vacation begins. The Rams will not be successful if Fitzpatrick is asked to pass 40+ times per game. The 3 tds against the Texans a couple of weeks ago are beginning to look like a fluke. The only Ram that is a must start is Torry Holt. Isaac Bruce can not be counted on for many big plays and lately, Kevin Curtis only seems to be open in garbage time against the prevent defense. Steven Jackson appeared indecisive against the Redskins. On a 4th and 2 Steven Jackson rushed behind the left side of the line, he hesitated, and then instead of following his blocking cut back into the pursuit for no gain. He is running too much laterally instead of north and south and is missing reads. Even against the Rams there is not a lot of fantasy potential for the Eagles. Archuleta still can't cover a tight end so LJ Smith has some possibilities. Moats should have a big day, just like every other name or no-name runnnig back that faces the Rams. | PLAYER | COMMENTS | FANTASY ROLE | | Ryan Fitzpatrick | Harvard SMarvard, he is just a rookie and way too risky for the fantasy playoffs. | Low #3 | | | | Steven Jackson | Has got to run more decisively. He will certainly be given the opportunities to succeed. | #2 | | | | Marshall Faulk | More involved in the offense, but not enough to consider. | #4 | | | | Torry Holt | Expect the usual from Torry. | #1 | | | | Isaac Bruce | Should have solid, not spectacular week. | #3 | | | | Kevin Curtis | Totally hit or miss on long strikes down the field. I would avoid. | Low #3 | | | | Jeff Wilkins | Should have another solid week. | #2 | | | | DEF/ST | Surprisingly decent game last week for situations they were put in. But, don't even think about it! | N/A | Time & Date of this Update (PST): 18:00 on Fri Dec 9 2005 News: Week 14 Preview Fantasy Football Slant : What a brilliant strategy by the Redskins. Force the rookie qb to beat you and the Rams accept the challenge and pass, pass, pass. No audibles, no spreading out the defense when the line is stacked at the point of attack. No short passing game to reduce the pressure on the QB. You have a rookie qb making his first start and in a close game you rush 3 times in the 2nd half? By the way, I am starting a write-in campaign for Rock Cartwright for the Pro Bowl. With that said, we may be in for another Fantasy Explosion this week against the Vikings! No defense and plenty of offensive weapons to go around on both teams. Given time in the pocket and with a balanced attack, I believe Ryan Fitzpatrick can be successful. Torry Holt and Isaac Bruce should continue to be successful with Fitzpatrick in the backfield. From a fantasy perspective Curtis seems to be the odd man out. In a repeat comment from last week and I quote "We all know the Rams should run the ball to protect their rookie QB, which is good news for Steven Jackson." The offensive line should be healthier and the Ram's coaching staff are saying they need to run more, which may help support this statement. For the Vikings you have to go with Mewelde Moore and/or Michael Bennett, Nate Burleson, and one of the Robinsons. In addition, it may be time for Jimmy Kleinsasser to find the end zone after being shutout for 2 years. | PLAYER | COMMENTS | FANTASY ROLE | | Ryan Fitzpatrick | Rams offensive line should be healthier, but still a risky play. | Low #2 | | | | Steven Jackson | Shutdown at home last week. Expect Steven to rebound. The Rams just have to figure out how to use him. | #2 | | | | Marshall Faulk | 4 touches in 3 games? | #4 | | | | Torry Holt | Expect the usual from Torry. Had the best chemistry with Fitzpatrick last week. | #1 | | | | Isaac Bruce | Should have solid, not spectacular week. | #3 | | | | Kevin Curtis | Might as well have been shutout against the Redskins. Not a good sign for fantasy playoffs. | Low #3 | | | | Jeff Wilkins | When the offense implodes, even the kicker suffers. | #2 | | | | DEF/ST | Not even a good flag football defense. Beware! | N/A | Time & Date of this Update (PST): 18:00 on Fri Dec 2 2005 News: Week 13 Preview Fantasy Football Slant : Let me get this straight...the Ram's strategy is to play like crap for 1 or 2 quarters and give the other team a sizable advantage, and then rally like hell trying to catch up. That strategy worked to perfection against the Texans and the result was a fantasy bonanza for both teams. This week against the Redskins it may be deja vu all over again. Both teams need this win to maintain any playoff hopes, though neither deserve to watch the playoffs on TV, let alone play in them. Hey Buffy! Guess who is starting at QB for the Rams? That's right it's Ry! Fitzpatrick looked confident and showed a strong arm in pre-season and did not disappoint in his NFL debut. Nice touch on those 3 TD passes. Holt, Bruce, and Curtis all have 2 tds in the last two game. We all know the Rams should run the ball to protect their rookie QB, which is good news for Steven Jackson. However, injuries on the offensive line may slow down the Rams fantasy gravy train. I guess that is why they play the game. For the Redskins Santana Moss, George "Clinton Portis" and the Funkadelics, and Chris Cooley have a good chance for pro bowl type stats. | PLAYER | COMMENTS | FANTASY ROLE | | Ryan Fitzpatrick | Can he pick up where he left off? Rams offensive line is beat up so be cautious. | Low #2 | | | | Steven Jackson | Jackson has combined for 100 yards in 5 of last 7 games. Might be a good idea to feature Jackson and take a little bit of pressure off the rookie QB? | #2 | | | | Marshall Faulk | 3 touches in 2 games? | #4 | | | | Torry Holt | He doesn't seem to care who is the QB. Another solid game ahead. | #1 | | | | Isaac Bruce | Another week, another TD. Fitzpatrick is showing no favoritism. | #3 | | | | Kevin Curtis | Overtime touchdown saved Curtis from a fantasy shutout. He may not get the looks going forward. | Low #3 | | | | Shaun McDonald | Limited opportunities. | N/A | | | | Jeff Wilkins | Expect another solid game. | #2 | | | | DEF/ST | Torched last week. Not a chance! | N/A | Time & Date of this Update (PST): 16:00 on Wed Nov 23 2005 News: Week 12 Review Fantasy Football Slant : The Rams appear to be playing out the string. The season became a bust after laying down to the Arizona Cardinals. The defense could not slow down the Cardinals and therefore allowed them to play eight in the box, stop the run, and try to end Bulger's career. After losing to the Deadbirds, the only thing worse would be for Tony Banks to come off the bench in Houston and "light up" this pathetically heartless defense. This week the Rams eye some level of redemption in Houston or position themselves for a high draft pick. With Mark Bulger out for 3 or more weeks the fantasy possibilities are Torry Holt, Isaac Bruce, and Kevin Curtis. Steven Jackson is the wild card. We all know the Rams should run the ball against the Texans, but since the Rams are constantly being outcoached, you never know. For the Texans the possibilities should be limited to Domanick Davis and Andre Johnson. | PLAYER | COMMENTS | FANTASY ROLE | | Jamie Martin | Decent matchup. Nothing special though. | Low #2 | | | | Steven Jackson | Are you kidding me? Twelve attempts against one of the worst rushing defenses in the league? I officially hate the Ram's playcalling! | #2 | | | | Marshall Faulk | 1 touch? | #4 | | | | Torry Holt | Looked healthy this past weekend. He should be back in the end zone this weekend. | #1 | | | | Isaac Bruce | Beautiful touchdown reception last weekend. Not a lot of looks, but still in the mix. | Low #3 | | | | Kevin Curtis | Touchdown from Martin during mop up time. Nearly as many catches as Torry. | High #3 | | | | Shaun McDonald | Limited opportunities. | Low #4 | | | | Jeff Wilkins | Should have solid game. | #2 | | | | DEF/ST | Please ignore anything I write in this space except: "LOOK SOMEWHERE ELSE FOR HELP!" | N/A |
