I think Shanahan is actually loving his three-headed monster, Anderson the big battering ram, Dayne big and apparently getting some of his shifty groove back and Bell the speedy slasher (though I don't think the situation is as productive as his one-headed monsters of the past). That said, Anderson is just NOT going to cut it as the "featured" back (of the three). I've explained it ad nauseam. I mean... if he did not break that ONE BIG run on Monday night, his numbers, otherwise, were VERY pedestrian. I think Dayne right now is next on the totem pole, BUT on Monday night Bell got two more carries than Dayne and looked WAY better than Dayne. Of course, Dayne only getting three carries isn't going to cut it for his style of running. He needs to be fed the ball (at least on a drive) and gotten into a groove like most backs,... but not necessarily a guy like Bell. His style of running does lend itself, more than Dayne's (or Anderson's), to coming in and spelling the main back and still having success. That's how I see things, at any rate...

Well, I think those of us who were able to catch the Broncos-Eagles game today gained some insight regarding Shanahan's usage or lack thereof of Tatum Bell... After that 69-yard touchdown run of Bell's today, Troy Aikman commented that when he talked to Shanahan about Bell, Shanahan said that if he feeds Bell the ball 10 to 15 times per game, it makes it so that on any given run he can take it all the way (like he did today and has done a few times thus far this season). The intimation/implication/theory is that (given Bell's skills set and style of running) the fresher Bell is kept, the more (effectively) the Broncos can exploit his big-play ability (i.e., if he were used as an every-down back, he'd become severely less effective as a home-run hitter, and more exposed to injury, mind you). With the way the Broncos running game has been with Anderson as the starter getting the bulk of the "grunt" work and "tough" yards, it's hard to argue that Bell should be or even needs to be his every-down back. So, this sheds some light on things, no?

The Denver running game for fantasy purposes is a genuine pain in the ass. I have both Anderson and Bell in my money league, and I heard all kinds of stupid theories on who to start this week. So far the best thing that works is to start Bell in games played in Denver for whatever reason. (Anderson gets winded in the high altitude ?) But more importantly, you must be thrilled with the Bronco team this year. It seemed like Plummer had regressed every year since he was a rookie, but he has been really solid. Has he even thrown an interception yet ? Lelie is playing great, and not just on the one-dimensional 'run as far as you can and let's chuck it up there' plays, but they are using him in the short game as well. Overall, their offense is incredibly potent because it's so unpredictable, where did that Devoe guy come from ? And did you see Stephen Alexander's one handed touchdown grab ? I thought that guy was working at Sears since 2002. Even the defense looks good. They really don't have a pass rush to speak of, but they are playing great as a unit. Getting Ian Gold back from Tampa was huge, and when you have the luxury of pulling Champ Bailey and replacing him with a rookie (Foxworth - Defensive Rookie of the year ?), that's a pretty deep secondary. Overall they are a very impressive team right now, I think your Super Bowl prediction might actually happen.

I guess i am missing something but he is CLEARLY the better back there. Why can he not get a fair shake at this. I know Anderson is doing well, but i think that if Bell had a chance his stats would be far better then anyone there. I just cant figure this out. Tatum averages close to 6 yards a carry, catches the ball well and was a first round pick for them. What is up? I have to wait for Anderson to get hurt? |
| I think we just heard the "response" (I'm not going to say "answer") to your question (because it was shown to be fallacious) here during the halftime of the Broncos-Steelers Conference Championship game. Tatum Bell has "Kevan Barlow" issues. Shannon Sharpe just said it. He can't pick up the blitz. More generally, that translates into he's not a good blocker. In the NFL, a running back has to be MORE than just a good runner. He has to be the complete package. Bell is not. So, your assertion that he "CLEARLY" is the better back is just flat-out wrong. That's why he hasn't (yet) become Denver's go-to tailback... and may never.
