Onterrio Smith Running Back Oregon 5-11, 205 pounds This guy can flat out run. He is by far the fastest back in the draft. He has great moves as well, having the ability to make would be tacklers look foolish. Has been dinged up a bit in college, so durability is an issue. His work ethic, or lack of, got him booted from Tennessee early on in his career. Depending on how he is perceived at the combine, he can move is stock way up, or he could move in the other direction. Draft Prognosis: Could be the first running back taken if he impresses scouts at the combine. Could be a late first rounder, or an early second. New England and Philadelphia are late first round options, and Detroit, Houston and Dallas in the early second.

Just to update the issue of Philly possibly drafting a RB... they currently have Duce Staley (starter), Dorsey Levens, Brian Westbrook, Correll Buckhalter, Brian Mitchell. The Eagles have used picks in each of the previous drafts to grab RBs (Buckhalter and Westbrook). They love both of the players. If Buckhalter is recovered from his injury, he will be the starter in 03. Staley will most likely be gone before opening day. Levens may stick around if he agrees to a veteran-minimum, one-year salary, although don't be surprised to see him gone too. There has been little effort thus far to re-sign Brian Mitchell (which is unfortunate - he may have been the MVP on the team this past year). The Eagles see RB as a position of strength. They won't use a first round pick on a RB. They may take a chance on a RB in the later rounds if they decide that Staley, Levens, and Mitchell are all not in their plans. Like I said in another thread, the positions most needed by the Eagles are DE and TE.

| I'd agree with you regarding DE, but I would throw in WR there. The corps of Thrash, Pinkston, and Mitchell is pretty weak. Very weak. Thrash is hardly a number one, Pinkston and his skinny legs had a decent year but inconsistant, and Mitchell is a huge question mark. (even though I personally think Mitchell will come on strong this year.) As far as TE, is Chad Lewis a free agent? I didn't think his salary was that bad. Even so, don't the Eagles like Jeff Thomason? I thought he was the heir apparent. I am a HUGE Eagles fan, but don't get all the skinny down here in Redskinsville.

| First off, maybe I worded that incorrectly. The Eagles refuse to admit that they desperately need WR help, so that is why I didn't list it among their needs. Pinkston is a solid #2 IMO, Thrash could be a good #3, Mitchell is still an enigma to me... I want to believe that he can play NFL football, but I'm having trouble believing it. As far as TE is concerned. Lewis is not a FA, but I thought he was making more money than he is. Just checked and he is not in the top 10 in salary at his position. He had a pretty bad year in 2002 (despite his Pro Bowl appearance). I think the Eagles would like a lot more production from the TE position (especially in light of the contributions that last year's rookie TE crop made). Lewis is rather old (he went to BYU and did his missionary work before playing in the NFL) so a big comeback year is not likely. Thomasen is a UFA and he is getting up there in age. The Eagles tend to let older FAs walk - just their modus operandi. They did recently sign long-snapper (and 3rd string TE) Mike Bartrum to a 5-year deal, so it seems likely that TE could be a position the Eagles are interested in. Keep an eye on Jason Whitten (Tennessee) if he is still available at #30. Another one to watch for is Ed Joppru (Michigan).
