ELI MANNING Mississippi HT: 6' 5" WT: 221 lbs. STRENGTHS: Eli Manning, first and foremost, has a nice gene pool working for him. His father, Archie, played QB for the Saints and his brother, Peyton, currently plays for the Colts. Manning brings a lot of skills to the NFL. He has outstanding leadership qualities and a terrific work ethic. He is able to read defenses and makes very good decisions. He also has great size and a good arm. He is able to make all of the short throws and has enough arm strength to go downfield as well. He has a very quick release and his mechanics are impeccable. While he doesn't possess great speed, he is agile enough to move around the pocket and avoid a pass rusher. Manning will be a franchise QB in the NFL. WEAKNESSES: There aren't many. Manning doesn't have a cannon for an arm and sometimes struggles with his accuracy on his downfield throws, but that is something he can work on. Manning also is a bit lean right now, but certainly has the frame to add some weight to withstand the pounding he'll likely receive on a bad team in the NFL. PROJECTION: Barring any surprises, Manning should be the first QB--and first player--selected in the draft. San Diego is keeping quiet about their options, but they missed out on a Manning a few years back and might not want to miss out this time. Manning could also land in Oakland or Arizona.

Ben Roethlisberger Miami, Ohio Ht: 6'5" Wt: 235 lbs. Strengths: Has a cannon arm; Great arm strength, and throws a pretty deep ball. Has all the tools to be a great NFL QB, including pocket presense, smarts, and the ability to see the whole field. Weaknesses: Not a great runner, but an able one. Not much to knock him on here. Projection: Should be a top four selection barring any excess drinking by team draft gurus the night before. Could go to any of the top four teams; the Chargers, Raiders, Cardinals or Giants.

JP LOSMAN Tulane HT: 6' 2" WT: 224 lbs. STRENGTHS: JP Losman is an excellent athlete at the QB position. He has very good speed (4.6 forty) and elusiveness. He can move around the pocket, roll out, avoid the pass rusher, and improvise. He has a live arm. He can make all of the throws (short, intermediate, and long). Losman is able to read defenses and locate his second and third options if the first breaks down. Losman is a confident QB and is also a vocal leader on the team. He is an intense competitor. WEAKNESSES: Losman has relied heavily on his athleticism in college. As a result, some of his QB skills are not as polished as they should be. Losman also has a tendency to try too hard to make a play and will often take a sack instead of throwing the ball away. He also lets his confidence cross the line into cockiness at times. His productiveness was not nearly to the level it should have been in college, although some of that can be chalked up to playing for a poor team. PROJECTION: JP Losman reminds me a lot of Brett Favre. He is a tough, athletic QB with a strong arm. I think he would be a perfect fit on the Packers as a back-up to Favre, although he probably won't be drafted that early in the first round or that late in the second. Look for Losman to go to a team like the Bills, Steelers, or Raiders in the early-mid second round.

JOHN NAVARRE Michigan HT: 6' 6" WT: 245 lbs. STRENGTHS: John Navarre was a three-year starter at a big-time college program. He has tremendous size for the QB position. He has great arm strength and can make all of the throws. He works hard and is a smart player. He has shown to be a very durable player despite taking many sacks as a result of his immobility. Navarre has been heavily criticized by fans of the Wolverines and has weathered the criticism and improved as a QB each year he has played. He is a very coachable player. WEAKNESSES: Navarre is a statue in the pocket. He is slow and awkward when trying to avoid the rush and frequently takes sacks. He has a tendency to fumble the ball when hit. He also seems to be less effective when he is hit repeatedly. Navarre also does not have great leadership skills. He failed to earn the respect of his teammates while at Michigan. A QB has to be a leader, either through words or actions, and Navarre has been unable to inspire his teammates at all. This is a big issue. PROJECTION: Because of his lack of mobility and his poor leadership skills, Navarre will have trouble succeeding in the NFL. Teams are still impressed by his size, arm strength, and production, and will take a chance on him. I doubt any teams will draft him with any thoughts of him being a starter. He will, instead, learn the position as an NFL back up. Because of this, he should go in the fourth or fifth rounds, possibly to a team like the Colts or the Giants.

MATT SCHAUB Virginia HT: 6' 5" WT: 233 lbs. STRENGTHS: Matt Schaub has great size at the QB position. At 6' 5" he is able to see the field effectively and his overhand throwing motion results in very few batted balls. Schaub is very effective in the short to medium range passing game, showing the ability to put touch on the ball or rifle it into tight spaces as needed. He has decent quickness, getting out from under center and setting up in a timely manner. He has good decision-making skills and doesn't make too many mistakes. Schaub is a leader in the huddle and is respected by his teammates. WEAKNESSES: Despite his size, Schaub does not show good arm strength on his long passes, often floating them. One of the biggest knocks on Schaub is the fact that he succumbs to pressure in the pocket too easily. He'll get a bit nervous and will rush a throw or tuck the ball away and run too early. He locks onto his primary receiver at times and will not make his progression of reads. After an outstanding junior year (28 TDs, 7 INTs), he slipped a bit in his senior season throwing only 17 TDs to 9 INTs. PROJECTION: Schaub has most of the physical attributes an NFL team will be looking for at QB and all of the intangibles (mental toughness, intelligence, coachability, leadership skills). Because QBs tend to be overvalued (compared to their subsequent NFL success) in the draft, look for Schaub to be selected as early as the third round (by a team like Buffalo, Pittsburgh, or Green Bay if they don't grab a QB with an early pick) or, more realistically, in the fourth to fifth rounds.

PHILIP RIVERS NC State HT: 6' 5" WT: 230 lbs. STRENGTHS: In his four years as a starter with the Wolfpack, Philip Rivers put up huge numbers. Rivers is the second leading passer in NCAA history with more than 13,000 yards. Rivers has ideal size for the position. He has decent arm strength and is especially proficient in the short to medium passing games. Rivers lacks foot speed, but has enough awareness, strength, and quickness to avoid the pass rush to some degree. He is a very smart player who makes very good decisions and avoids mistakes. Rivers is a hard worker who inspires the trust and loyalty of his teammates. He is also the vocal leader teams desire at the QB position. WEAKNESSES: Rivers has one of the funkiest throwing motions anyone has seen. He holds the ball too low and almost slings it out sidearm. Despite mechanics that scare the heck out of NFL scouts, he is still a very effective QB. Rivers is very slow of foot (5.1 forty) and is not a threat to run the ball. Because of his throwing motion and a lack of great arm strength, Rivers is sometimes a bit erratic and inaccurate with his longer passes. PROJECTION: It seems almost assured that Rivers will be the third QB selected (Manning, Roethlisberger). Rivers could possibly go as early as #11 or #13 to the Steelers or Bills, however it seems more likely that he will drop toward the end of the first round to a team like the Packers (if they do not sign Tim Couch). If the Packers don't grab him, he'll go early in the second round to a team like the Chargers or the Giants (if neither one grabs a QB early).

CODY PICKETT Washington HT: 6' 3" WT: 230 lbs. STRENGTHS: Cody Pickett, a former qualifier for the National Rodeo Finals, has all the makings of a future NFL star QB. He has a good body, a strong arm, and the right attitude to succeed at the position. Pickett throws a very clean pass in the short to medium range passing game (which is what the Huskies offense is built upon). His mechanics are very good with a quick set-up and a quick release. If his primary receiver is covered, Pickett is able to make his progressions. He shows good quickness in avoiding the rush and has enough speed (4.8 forty) to run if needed, although he is not a scrambler. Pickett is very poised in the pocket and is a leader in the huddle. He has an excellent work ethic and will play through injuries. WEAKNESSES: Pickett seems to struggle a bit with longer passes, although he didn't throw many in the Washington offense. He has the arm strength to make the throws, so more experience may be all that's needed. Pickett also tries to force the ball into tight coverages too often, resulting in incompletions and interceptions. He will often hold onto the ball too long in the pocket and take a sack instead of throwing the ball away. Pickett also fumbles the ball too much and will need to show better ball-control. PROJECTION: Pickett appears to have all of the measurables needed in the QB position, however he didn't set the world on fire as a collegiate QB. With good coaching and a good system, Pickett should succeed at the NFL level. Look for Pickett to go as early as the end of the third round (Chiefs?) or the early to mid-fourth round (Broncos?).

LUKE McCOWN Louisiana Tech HT: 6' 3" WT: 210 lbs. STRENGTHS: The younger brother of Josh McCown, Arizona's starting QB, Luke was a prolific passer in college and broke most of the Louisiana Tech records set by Tim Rattay, current starting QB for the Niners. McCown has decent height and a frame that could take some more bulk. He has a rifle arm and can make all of the short and intermediate throws. McCown has good speed (4.69 forty) and athleticism and is able to elude pass rushers and move around the pocket effectively. He throws well on the run in either direction. McCown is confident and is a leader in the huddle. WEAKNESSES: McCown will need to add some more size to sustain the wear and tear of the NFL. He has difficulty reading a defense (especially zone coverage) and will throw interceptions. He also has a tendency to throw into tight coverage, leading to even more interceptions. He struggles with longer passes, often getting to much air under the ball causing it to hang up and allowing the defenders a chance to make a play. PROJECTION: McCown will get drafted by a team who is interested in grooming a QB for a few years. He was productive in college and has good bloodlines. Look for him to be selected in or around the sixth round, possibly by a team like the Saints.
