Well, I'm going to get back to the ultimate task at hand around here, fantasy football. How about how all this works out from a fantasy-football perspective? How has the goings-on today affected incumbent veterans? And, which rookies found themselves in auspicious situations and which rookies did not? Who were the winners and losers today fantasy-wise? 1. As a result of what amounts to in essence the #1 pick, the Giants procurement of QB Eli Manning, QB Kerry Collins becomes one of today's biggest losers. His job is immediately in jeopardy. He really just becomes a lame duck. Staying as a backup will be awkward and he probably won't find anywhere else to start. Collins owners in keeper leagues lost BIG today. Kerry Collins, HUGE DIRECT LOSER today; Eli Manning, whatever! 2. With the Raiders pick of LT Robert Gallery and then another lineman in Round 2, QB Rich Gannon and RB's Justin Fargas and Tyrone Wheatley were indirect winners, for sure. They all gain outstanding blocking and did not get any competition, to boot. Rich Gannon, Justin Fargas, Tyrone Wheatley, slight indirect winners today! 3. With the Cardinals pick of WR Larry Fitzgerald, both he, despite his strong, long relationship with head coach Dennis Green, and WR Anquan Boldin took a significant hit in fantasy value. On the other hand, QB Josh McCown's value got a shot in the arm. Larry Fitzgerald, Anquan Boldin, significant direct losers today; Josh McCown HUGE indirect winner. Also, Marcel Shipp is somewhat of an indirect winner today as all of these weapons should help to open up the running game. 4. San Diego's procuring QB Philip Rivers, a Bernie Koser prototype, i.e. the kind of quarterback head coach Marty Schottenheimer did a GREAT job of grooming back in Cleveland, makes him a winner of sorts today. He'll be the projected starter from the get-go, but he doesn't have many weapons in the receiving game. Overall, Philip Rivers, basically a direct winner today... To what degree? We'll see... QB Drew Brees is obviously the BIG loser. 5. With Cleveland's drafting of TE Kellen Winslow, Jr., QB Jeff Garcia got hooked up. Garcia, who is not known for his arm strength, but is good on his feet, is a quarterback who needs solid play from the tight-end position. He's got it now in Winslow. Given how well they should compliment each other, both Jeff Garcia and Kellen Winslow are BIG indirect winners today. 6. Detroit's selecting of WR Roy Williams created two losers, Williams himself and WR Charles Rogers, who mitigate each other's fantasy value, and one winner, QB Joey Harrington. Then, when Detroit got RB Kevin Jones, we created a bunch more fantasy losers in RB Artose Pinner and whoever else is still there, RB's Shawn Bryson and Olandis Gary, and to a degree, at least in the immediacy Jones himself. Recap: DIRECT fantasy losers, Roy Williams, Charles Rogers, Kevin Jones and Artose Pinner and Shawn Bryson and Olandis Gary if they remain; indirect fantasy winner, Joey Harrington. 7. When Jacksonville took WR Reggie Williams, get this, I think it created a bunch of fantasy winners. Williams compliments WR Jimmy Smith very well; he should more so help open up the field for Jimmy more than compete with with for the same kinds of passes. QB Byron Leftwich gets another solid target and RB Fred Taylor even indirectly gets some help. Jimmy Smith, BIG DIRECT winner; Reggie Williams, significant direct winner; Byron Leftwich, BIG indirect winner; Fred Taylor, small indirect winner. 8. With QB Ben Roethlisberger's falling to Pittsburgh, QB's Tommy Maddox and Charlie Batch for that matter became direct losers. Ben Roethlisberger, scratch; Tommy Maddox, HUGE direct loser; Charlie Batch, direct loser, but he didn't have that much to lose to begin with, so... 9. Buffalo's selecting WR Lee Evans creates "a situation" in Buffalo. WR Eric Moulds has had an up-and-down career with a down year last year. WR Josh Reed did not really live up to the billing last year and neither did newly-acquired QB Drew Bledsoe, who also received a "threat" later in the first round in the form of QB J.P. Losman. Evans loses in a way by becoming part of a sketchy pass offense and apparently being stuck being Moulds, who along with Reed also directly suffer from this pick. Lee Evans, Eric Moulds, Josh Reed, significant direct losers; Drew Bledsoe, J.P. Losman, scratch. 10. Tampa Bay's selection of WR Michael Clayton, himself somewhat of a winner today as he compliments WR Joey Galloway, another slight winner today, well, created one particular direct fantasy loser, WR Keenan McCardell, and one indirect winner, QB Brad Johnson. Also, RB Charlie Garner was an indirect winner in the sense that he did not receive any more competition in the backfield. Michael Clayton and Joey Galloway, slight direct winners; Keenan McCardell, significant direct loser; Brad Johnson, getting another receiving weapon, a significant indirect winner. 11. Philadelphia's choosing big OT Shawn Andrews (and not choosing a running back) creates a lot of indirect winners: QB Donovan McNabb, RB's Bryan Westbrook and Correll Buckhalter. Westbrook and Buckhalter also did not get any competition. However, as Westbrook and Buckhalter will continue to water each other down, McNabb is the biggest sole winner of the three. Donovan McNabb, significant indirect winner; Bryan Westbrook and Correll Buckhalter, slight, but twofold, indirect winners today. 12. RB Steven Jackson's going to St. Louis is a bit puzzling. As aforementioned, it created more indirect winners than anything. He surely could have gone somewhere where he would have had a more immediate opportunity. Steve Jackson, slight direct loser. 13. RB Chris Perry's heading to Cincinnati creates a bit of a loser in RB Rudi Johnson, but not too significant. Perry is another back that could have gone somewhere more auspicious. Chris Perry, scratch; Rudi Johnson, ever-so-slight direct loser. 14. At first glance, Alanta's selecting WR Michael Jenkins seemingly spells bad news for the (natural) #2 WR Peerless Price, but actually Jenkins's presence may allow Price to be more productive, though not a star. Some may say that Price is a big loser today. I say, Peerless Price, Michael Jenkins, scratch. Neither will be great; both should be decent to solid... #3's. 15. San Francisco's selection of WR Rashaun Woods make a winner of sorts out of QB Tim Rattay. Woods too is a winner as he will likely start right off the bat opposite WR Brandon Lloyd. WR Rashaun Woods, big direct winner; Tim Rattay, a little bit of a direct winner, but in his case anything is better than nothing, so... 16. Denver's selecting RB Tatum Bell (and not Jackson or Jones) created winners out of all of Denver's incumbents or prior offseason acquisitions, RB's Garrison Hearst, Quentin Griffin and Mike Anderson. Of course, as a tailback going to the Broncos, you're a de facto winner. Bottom line: Tatum Bell, Garrison Hearst, Quentin Griffin, Mike Anderson, all slight winners today. But, this is a mess from a fantasy perspective. We, fantasy footballers, BIG LOSERS here! 17. RB Julius Jones's being the tailback picked by the tailbackless Cowboys make him a de facto winner. In a way, though, RB's Troy Hambrick and recently re-signed Aveion Cason are the direct winners. Julius Jones, big direct winner; Hambrick, et al., scratch (which is definitely the best he/they could have hoped for). Side note: for some reason, something tells me that Bills RB Travis Henry will be a Cowboy someday, perhaps as early as during the '04 season, more likely in '05. After that, who knows? It's a crapshoot. That's my take on what I would consider the particularly significant picks from a fantasy point of view. I hope it adds to your FF arsenal!
