From more of a modern-day perspective, which is mine, I really like the selections of Marcus Allen going in as a first-balloter and James Lofton, who I have always had admiration for even though I can't stand his fantasy football advice on that FOX Sports Net fantasy football show he is/was on. Though I hate to say it as a Broncos fan, I do think Marcus should go in as a Raider. Sorry FourTwoOh! From a historical perspective, of which, granted, I am less knowledgeable, I really like seeing Hank Stram finally get in. He seemed to be the quintessential coach, at least of the times, and a successful one at that. I also don't know how much longer a guy like that, who arguably should be inducted, has a chance to get in, so I am happy he got in now. Congrats, FourTwoOh!

| I almost literally "cut my baby teeth" on Hank Stram coaching pro football, so I'm as biased as they come. Very likely I'll be making my initial pilmgramige to Canton this summer. Stram and Allen, Chiefs - Packers HOF game. Road trip!

| I tend to agree with you, Dirk. I think Monk should eventually be in the Hall. But, I did remember reading something about six months ago regarding why Monk should not be inducted into the Hall... ever, and I found it! It is actually Peter King, whose opinion I typically respect, who makes this assertion! Here is the quote: Memo to Mel Kiper: You say Art Monk should be a lock for the Hall of Fame, and you say you can't figure a single reason why he hasn't been voted in. I'm a voter. Here's why: Monk played 16 NFL seasons. He was All-Pro twice. He led his team in receiving six times in 16 seasons. I covered the Giants in the mid-'80s, and they respected Gary Clark and feared Clark far more than Monk. Yes, he caught more than 900 balls. In 10 years, he'll be about 15th on the all-time receptions list. Classy guy, wonderful person off the field -- but neither of those things can be factored in when we consider qualification for induction. Monk belongs in the Hall of Very Good, not the Hall of Fame. Here is a link to the whole article, but I have to admit that the excerpt above is all that is stated regarding the issue at hand: http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/inside_game/peter_king/news/2002/08/05/ mmqb/.
