Yesterday the FOX broadcasters brought up a point that I had hoped would be looked at the previous offseason. A team is allowed 2 challenges per game. Regardless of whether they get the call overturned or not they only get 2. Well in that Sea/GB game there were several missed calls that had to be overturned. It is rare to see such poor officiating but when that occurs why should the team be penalized for such mistakes? Is it possible that some refs have become reliant on the replay? If a play is ruled dead it can not be reviewed but if it is ruled a fumble then it can be. Knowing this do the refs lean toward allowing a play to continue hoping the team will challenge it? I say we allow teams to keep their challenges if they get the call over turned. If we hold refs accountable for how many calls get overturned than we can start to weed out the bad ones.
I think teams should get TWO challenges and that is it. While I understand the argument of 'winning' the challenge and getting to keep it, I think that coaches would challenge too much. Right now, WHEN to challenge is critical. Martz is an idiot and challenges a spot 10 seconds into the game. Some other challenges occur early in the game over trivial stuff, yet when a turnover occurs they ignore it.
Bottom line, errors are going to happen. Part of the game. So, I like the strategy of knowing WHEN and HOW to use the challenges.
