Something interesting struck me after watching play-off football this weekend.

On Saturday, the Rams fell to the Panthers in OT.  Interestingly, the Rams trailed the game by three in the late stages of the fourth quarter.  The Rams managed to get a first down at the Panthers 15 yard line with 42 seconds remaining in the game.  Instead of taking a couple chances (with one time-out remaining and a home crowd) to get into the endzone and win the game, Mike Martz sent out the kicking team to send the game into overtime.  Martz explained in his post-game news conference that he did not want to risk a mistake like an interception.

Faced with a similar situation on Sunday, Andy Reid chose to throw the ball into the endzone.  The Eagles had a first and ten on the Green Bay 19 yard line with 22 seconds remaining.  The easy call (like Martz did) would be to send in the FG unit and look to OT.  Instead, Donovan threw two passes to Pinkston and Thrash (both of which went incomplete - one of which was nearly intercepted).

Early in the season, Donovan McNabb was struggling mightily.  The fans and media were calling for Donovan to be benched (even before they discovered the poor play was -- at least in part -- attibuted to a sore thumb).  Reid maintained confidence in his QB and never wavered.  McNabb went on to have a very solid season.

In the first game of the season, Kurt Warner, the starting QB for the Rams at the time, was beaten up by the Giants.  Apparently having suffered a concussion, Kurt Warner was relegated to the bench the following week in favor of Marc Bulger.  Midway through the season, the Rams lost a game to the Niners and Bulger threw two costly INTs.  After that game, when the media inquired about the possible return of Kurt Warner, Martz emphatically indicated that he had full confidence in Bulger, end of story.

It makes me wonder if he really does have confidence in Bulger.
