Offseason, Protection Spots, Trading, etc.,...

I responded to the following question I received by e-mail:

Is there any info on rule in the GBRFL/GBRFL2 about keepers and trading draft picks and protection slots?...

... in the following manner...

Please read this thoroughly and not just skim it...

A lot of this stuff is just passed down by tradition.  Try to go through the "Rules/Scoring" page with a fine-toothed comb and try the old "News & Notes" page located at:

http://www.fantasyfootballer.com/gbrfl/newsnotes.htm.

Also, try going through the "Transactions" page at the GBRFL site thoroughly, paying special attention to our OFFSEASON trading practices, and you should be able to grok what's going on.

Other than that, bottom line, it's no-holds-barred.  You can carry as many players as you want until the cut-down date, which will be scheduled a week before the draft is to begin/be conducted, i.e., you can make 3-player-for-1-player trades or whatever and, if you are the guy receiving the 3, not have to drop anybody.  You begin with 12 protection spots.  You can trade them away at will as well.  If you do a trade involving "protection spots" and/or "draft picks", though, it must "even out" in the end; e.g., if you trade Javon Walker for a 1st Round Draft Pick, the guy giving up Walker would also HAVE TO get a (later) draft pick or protection spot back in return; if you trade Javon Walker for a Protection Spot, the same stands, the guy getting Javon Walker would HAVE TO get a draft pick in return.  We keep this stuff even.  In other words, everyone starts with 12 protection spots and 9 draft picks, i.e., 21 = protection spots + draft picks, and come draft time everyone is to have 21 draft picks or protection spots.

Sometime during the offseason, I will turnover the "Rosters" page to indicate how many protection spots each team has.

Steve, is there any place that shows the history on what players have been protected in past years in the GBRFL?

Not exactly as such...  What you could do is go to the "Rosters" page and then go to past "Rosters" pages, which are linked to from the main "Rosters" page, and kind of figure it out, to a degree at least, from there.

...

On a side note, I am somewhat coming up for air here with things I've got goin' on (@theEnglishMaster.com, regarding grad school and projects here) and I will soon update the league sites(' "Rosters" and "Transactions" pages) with offseason trades that have been made.  Just bear with me, guys!

When do we cut down our rosters to just those players we are protecting?

Midnight of the seventh day prior to the draft, i.e., it is contingent on the draft date.

Just out of curiosity, where would I have found this on my own.  I looked through the News and Notes pages and the History stuff, all to no avail.  (Although it is entirely possible I missed it there.)

This, you wouldn't have found anywhere at the site.  I could forward you the annual e-mails I send out regarding it, but...  It's just part of the GBRFL... "oral tradition"!

Are there other things that are part of the "oral tradition" that we should know about at some point?

I don't know if you are being serious or not, but, in any event, like this one, if there are, they'll come in due course, i.e., reasonably before that "some point".  None come immediately to mind, in any event.
