Me, I am going to sit out by the pool,   drink some brew, BBQ an assortment of meat, then watch some fireworks.

I'll be celebrating my 4th of July in a foreign country.

I hear it's raining over there now, in Spain though, which sucks considering the weather we've had here in Jersey for the past few months, and now that  the weather becomes beautiful here, I leave to Spain where there's nothing but rain.

Where exactly are you going?  Because I heard the rain in Spain falls mainly on the plain.  Sorry, couldn't resist.

As I stated in the other thread... I'm driving up to Cape Cod, Massachusetts.  Staying at a Bed & Breakfast in the town of Sandwich (where I used to spend all of my summers growing up).

I'm going to Ourense, Galicia. Which can be found in the upper north-west of Spain. Right next to Portugal, where that big oil spill happened awhile back.(Hopefully the beaches aren't to bad still from that.)

Do any of you live near a Hard Rock cafe?

I collect the tall shot glasses, and was wondering if any of you live near a HRC, if you could pick me up one. I have several, including San Francisco, Washington DC, San Juan, Los Angeles, Cancun, Paris, London, Phoenix, Baltimore, Las Vegas, Puerto Vallarta, and Honolulu.

If you could help me out that would be awesome!!!

If/When I get up to New York, I'll try to remember to hook you up, BW.  By the way, you guys do know that the founder of the Hard Rock Cafe was a University of Denver graduate. So, we'll see if I can't hook you up through the "back door" someday.  But, I digress, I'll be hookin' ALL YOU CBFLers up in the "back door" "cum" the start of the '03 season!

Guys, just a heads-up here on something I just went about finally dealing with today.  NOW IS THE (long/capitalized "E") TIME TO CONSOLIDATE STUDENT LOANS!!  I just did today.  Yea, a longer term, but .4% less than what I was paying and 1.4% less after four years, AND, MOREOVER, a fairly hefty three-digit monthly student-loan payment down to a mere TWO-digits! The positive ripple effect of this on my life and my future, financial and otherwise, is, well, going to be far-reaching! If you got a tough nut to crack, get on this train a.s.a.p.  The representative I spoke with told me that NOW was probably going to be about as good as it gets. I can't take any credit for the timing, though; just dumb luck on my part!  But, maybe for some "Gridironer" out there, it can be a premeditated stroke of brilliance!

Yeah, I got a telemarketer call about doing the same thing.  I told them to mail the info to me, but I haven't sat down to read it yet.  I'm still trying to find the time to refi my mortgage.

Well, with telemarketers it is always like... I just did it through one of my two "current" (one lame-duck) lenders.  Actually, in this process, I learned that if it is done "aboveboard", switching lenders is NOT a given.  There are certain criteria, one of them deals with the number of lenders you have and by what agency you are paying them.  I actually started this by following up on a deal available to me by another lender by way of ATO.  It so turned out that I could not take that deal because of laws that are in place.  It ended up that my main lender gave me a better deal, anyway!  Point being, if it is represented to you, moreover by a telemarketer, that "it's no problem", so to speak, you may want to proceed with a wary eye.  It MAY not technically be a student loan you are consolidating your student loans to and it may seem like a good deal at the time, but when it comes to rough times and you need a forebearance or deferment, you may find yourself dealing with more of a "credit card-type" institution rather than a "student loan-type" institution, the latter of which is MUCH more reasonable to deal with.

A lot of times when it comes to student loans, it is easier to go straight to the source.  Sallie Mae issues a HUGE amount of the loans out there.  Even if they were not the originator, (they sell to financial institutions)  they will consolidate for you.  I have found they have GREAT RATES on student loans.  Keep in mind, you can only refinance rates ONCE or  CONSOLIDATE once.  (they are the same thing under different terms)   Just go toSallie Mae.com

Holy Shit! The background music for the commercial for "Singer Smart Scissors" ($19.95) is background PORN music. I used to have the video.  It was one of a number I brought to Korea and left there.  I don't remember which movie it was.  Most of the videos I had, since I'm not one of these dudes who cares about the stories, were just of clips from other other flicks.  BUT, the music is unforgettable.  I think Suzie Suzuki and the famed T. T. Boy were in this clip!  You know me with my Asian fettish AND it was a DP scene. I used to watch this clip over and over (and picture my little oriental wife ).  I think that is why the music is SO ingrained in my head.  ANYWAY, I couldn't believe I was hearin' this shit on a nationwide-played TV commercial, on FOX News Channel no less!

I knew there were reasons that I liked FNC beyond just the blah, blah, blah political BS. 8)

If this fuckin' idiot announcing the baseball All-star game continues to insist on getting the time in Japan wrong, I swear I am going to jump through my computer screen and kick his ass.  There are people in need of jobs in this country, and this idiot can't add 13 hours to Eastern Standard Time correctly! The notion of "all-star" obviously doesn't apply to the announcers!  But, what can you expect from MLB, right?

I had the game on TV, but it was muted the whole time so I didn't hear any of it.

Does the fact that we are not in Eastern Standard Time, but, rather, Eastern Daylight Time have anything to do with it?  Does the rest of the world set their clocks ahead in the spring and back in the fall?

No, they don't have any of that jazz, and, ultimately, that fact just makes his mistake bigger, anyway.  Right now, they are 13 hours ahead of us (in EST); when we fall back, they are then 14 hours ahead of us, i.e. further ahead of us (which would make his answer even "more" wrong).  Bottom line, though, when he was saying it was 8:30 a.m., rush hour, over in Japan at 9:30 p.m. here, he was WRONG.  It was 10:30 a.m. in Japan.  He maintained that mistake in at least one other instance that I heard.  That's just poor!  I put more effort into "getting it right" with my posts on message boards for goodness sake!

Oh, Jesus!  I finally gotta' make a post about the passing of an evident immortal among mere mortals, Cuban Salsa singer Celia Cruz. Now, my experience may be different than some of yours with our local newscast here coming out of New York.  It's probably similar in Miami, I can only guess based on the "education" I have gotten on this tremendous human being, for whom I could apparently hardly carry water.  Bottom line, nobody I know has ever heard of this woman, but for the last five or so days since she's passed our news broadcasts here have been inundated (relatively speaking) with news about this woman's passing.  For Christ's sake, there wasn't this much fuckin' coverage for and homage paid to Mr. Rogers (a genuinely pure spirit), Kathryn Hepburn (perhaps the greatest actress of the 20th century), Richard Crenna, Buddy Epson, and Lynne Thigpen (of The District, who died a sudden and truly tragic death) COMBINED.  I'm serious!  I don't get it!  It's as if this woman is up for sainthood or something. She has not lived a particularly philanthropic life.  She was a Vegas-style show singer of Salsa.  She was old and had lived a long life, so it is not a particularly tragic story in that sense.  I mean, look, I am one who believes that every life has value.  But, that is exactly my point.  If I hear one more time that her casket is about to come around the corner or when the nth memorial service is going to be, I am going to projectile vomit.  What about all of our young people over in Iraq giving their lives?  Hardly a note on that anymore, relatively speaking.  It's time to let "it" and this woman, whoever she is, rest.  Is this what "diversity" in America now means?

Okay, to balance out the negative energy of my pissy post above, though I stand by my words, I want to send out a little love to a couple standout athletes and the "movie-theme" type things they did this week:

1. No-name golfer Ben Curtis, who got a bit lucky, but still fulfilled his end of the deal.  He stoically, or "Stoicly", went about his business, focusing only on that which was in his sphere of influence.  His story is a great one of perseverance and I was quite touched by his humility and humanity.  Watching all those locals pulling for him at his Ohio golf club was awesome.  Congrats, Ben!

2. Cyclist Jan Ullrich, who returned a favor and took the "high road" today and slowed down, basically stopped "racing", until Lance Armstrong was able to pull himself back up after falling.  Great sportsmanship!  Was it necessary?  No!  But, sometimes, doing the right thing does not mean that doing the opposite is wrong.  It ultimately was a standup move!

All that for a salsa singer.  There wasn't near that much coverage when the great Owen Hart and the even greater Classy Freddie Blassie died.

What is this world coming too?
