Steggie Steggum's  Top 40 Countdown
#15... Finally! Sorry for the VERY long delay, everybody. ... Well, the timing of this one given the recent "nauseating songs" discussion may not be so auspicious for me.  Let me put it this way... I am DEFINITELY once again putting my "versatility" on show here and breaking out another genre of music I can do.  To remind those interestedly following this, this tune is the third of the three "Day/Days block". For those who know this artist/group (we are getting some "strange" (but cool, I think) female vocals on this one; the singer sings like this:  and to most of us the lyrics sound like this:  ) well, that along with the parenthetical there and the message icon for this post should be a huge hint that gives away what the song is.  This tune could actually be even higher on my list if there were more song to it (this one suffers a similar problem to my #37) (this fact may actually be seen as a positive to you guys). As those of you following the countdown closely know, there aren't many females on it. But, the female artist of this song and her VERY distinctive "style" I absolutely adore. ... As intimated above, this one may also cause me to have to take cover a la the now infamous #26 (regarding which a couple of you owe me some public confessions, actually,... eh-hem  ...  ). Nevertheless and (inaudible) lyrics aside, it's excellent "music to my ears"... So, enjoy #15 (if it's in you to, which I hope)...

#14 is on its way soon. But, first I got to further comment on #15. Last night, I listened to it, first time in a while. Boy, did it have an effect on me that it hadn't had in a while. It took me right back to the "new age" shop in Boulder, Colorado where Amy, my main college sweetheart, and I bought the album, Shepherd Moons. It was the end of junior year. My mom was visiting. She was with us. Though I don't really dig a lot of what is in "new age" shops, besides the little bit of "reason-able" eastern philosophy stuff they have, I love the smell of incense and the "feel" of them. We ran into a girl from my high school class, yea, a chick all the way back from Ocean, New Jersey, Devorah Merling. And, Amy, my mom and I all had a wonderful day in wondrous Boulder. It was the first time my mom had been. The mall...
 ...   ...  ... ...  ...  ...  ...  ... 
The Little Russian Cafe... mmmmmmm!  It was a great time and a great memory.
Anyway, I'll try to get back on the countdown when I get a chance to come up for some air here. Jake's keeping me busy over there on that politics thread of ours. ...  Could it be a conspiracy? Jake (and perhaps bg) may be trying to keep me from finishing my countdown... ...and, might I add, with just cause! ...
In all seriousness, I am VERY knee-deep in this whole transition-to-grad-school, buying-a-car, moving-to-DC, etc., etc., thing, and that's not to mention that we are in the high-season for, uh, fantasy football... of all things; got the GBRFL draft on Saturday.  Looks like another night of just a few hours of sleep for the Stegger.

#14... We're creepin' along here. With EVERYTHING going on both for me personally AND with football gearin' up here, this effort has had to take a back seat. I will see it through, though (I'm enjoying it ultimately). I just hope those of you interested can continue to patiently follow along. ... Anyway, without Freddie Adu,  #14... This one goes back to what I consider to be the heart of the heyday of rock and pop. The most marked thing about this tune vis-a-vis ALL of the rest is that this is one of the only songs I like the live version of more than the studio version (although you are going to get the latter here) though I have never heard it in concert (I know, I know, my liking studio versions more than live ones along with my inappreciation for instumentals is illustrative of my musical noviceness,... but it is what it is). I still remember when I first heard it on Saturday Night Live. I thought to myself, "What a great, distinctive, smooooooth-sounding tune with such neat sounds and cool  vocals." The bass line of this tune is just awesome. I even more vividly remember tracking it down, keeping tabs on SNL waiting for the show to repeat and finally when/how I recorded it. Nothing high-tech! I just took the (cheap) box  I had, plugged a headset into the mic jack and held it up to the TV's speaker. It came alright. I still have that tape and I still listen to and enjoy it. To sound good with this kind of recording is kind of a testament to how good this song is. Ennnnjoy...

Steg, great choice at #14 !!, #14 and '#32' are my favs from your list so far.

I've always liked R.M, especially "the album that begins with 'A'", that's the album they put it all together. ... was probably even better solo. His peak in my opinion was 'B & G' , and the album that '#14' comes off of , (I forget the name of the album).
Anyway, cool tune, I look forward to the rest.

However, my going out of my way and using forced language to avoid ever bringing up the artists' or songs' names in all of my write-ups is pretty conspicuous, brother...
Anyway, no quizzes. As per the quote below, it's kind of a philosophy of experience thing for me.

In short, music is meant to be experienced by the ear, i.e. not as a written-out list. I want this to be an aural experience. In my case, I'd rather people not just read a list and, moreover, if they know the title, not listen to the tune. I'd rather have people "experience" the music, and, as stated earlier on the thread (even if it's a song the person knows), "connect" with it upon hearing it and get that awesome feeling when you hear a song you haven't heard for a long time and maybe even forgot or that you share with me in liking, like the feeling I have gotten when listening to songs on your list that I can't identify by just the title. It's so much cooler than just reading, "In The End - Linkin Park," and going, "Oh, yea, I know that tune. Next!" There's no (what I would call) real or substantial "experience" there. Mind you, that is NOT what happened with me with that song. As I wrote to you that night, when I heard what that tune was, the hairs on the nape of my neck stood up and I jumped out of my chair and started shakin' it!  I then went on to listen to it two or three more times (in the wee hours of the morning).
Does this now still seem strange?

I actually got positive feedback on #15 from one of our fellow (specifically speaking) Gridironers the other day on the phone. It is a hidden gem if it's within the purview of your taste.

Steggie Steggum's Top 40 Countdown
#13... Well, with my being back in school (after a 10-year hiatus),  ... as expected, the Top 40 Countdown here has really slowed to a crawl. That's just the way it's going to be from here on out. I guess it'll allow the suspense to further build (something I always avoid  ) and let some newcomers (as this is our high season for membership growth) catch on up. ... Anyway,... with #13 here, Steggie's gonna shift gears  on yous BIG-time yet again. I bought the CD with this tune on it back during that unexpectedly tagged-on year in Korea, 2002, the year "the Gridiron" came to be, and this tune, my clearcut favorite from the album, totally brings me back to that time of my life, a period that I dreaded entering (as many of you who have become close with me know... I dreaded (the idea of tucking my tail and) going back to Korea), but turned out to be a time I look back upon with a smile and warm feeling. Life in Andong, South Korea for that year was great, actually, as it turned out, and the circumstances with which I had to deal certainly played a direct part in the launching of "the Gridiron" here. One of the FF Articles I wrote during this period makes mention of this song, actually. This song has a mesmerizing, smooth sound and its "orator" is among the best in his biz. You don't have to like the artist herein in question as a person to recognize that he exemplifies a special, natural talent, moreover, in a genre of music that doesn't often, albeit justifiably, get recogized as being filled with talent-filled people. The fact that this song has "all" original content helps make it more respect-worthy for me (all the sampling these days turns me off). Also, without elaborating too much on the controversial theme of the song, suffice it to say that, on some base, though legit, level, I can somewhat empathize with the harsh  reality the lyrics of this song present. In any case, I wonder how you all will handle this latest shift in gears/show of versatility on the Countdown...

Wow... I disagree with this one. I love the artist in question, but find this song one of his most unlistenable tunes. Too whiny for me.

While I do see what you mean, isn't it just a little questionable to critique a song of his for its being whiny? Isn't his whole schtick essentially whiny? I mean, yes, his tone in this tune is surely more whiny than, let's say, pissed off, his usual tone, but... Being whiny seems like an odd thing to accuse a song of his, no? I guess you did say "too whiny", as in this one crosses the line, which is more understandable. Anyway, it just struck me in a knee-jerk fashion as a peculiar critique (of this artist).

for the shitty "cleaned-up", radio version of this tune. It's GOT TO have the flow of the full-on foul verbiage or forget about it. The hardcore lyrics are the key to the nature of the song. The soft ones absolutely ruin it.
